  1. Anything reputable will be on here within minutes at the slowest so here is all you need… just need to watch out for some who post less than reputable sources, but others will call that out as and when

There’s not a lot of reliable people on Derby these days, news seems to be kept really quiet since Warne. But on twitter @LeighCurtis_DT is the local newspaper guy and @domjdietrich is the local radio guy and if anything legit is happening they will know.

I'd imagine that all of our signings in this window will look underwhelming. We're a League 1 side with restrictions on how much we can spend. We're not going to splash big fees on players where there is competition from Championship or the larger clubs in this division.

Warne also wants athletic players, so we're not going to sign any fading stars with big reputations.

What we will do is make a series of boring looking signings from the Conference, League 2, Scotland and Ireland. I doubt any will be more than 'meh'.

The excitement will come from the recruitment team (hopefully) finding some uncut diamonds and Warne making a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts.

Shush with being sensible, it’s not like we’ve made splashy signings on well known names and overpriced junk in the past is it? I want only players I’ve heard of.

Why would they  pay £4 mill? We can’t afford the £25k a week wages , so we are desperate to get him out on loan . In January Beilik can sign a pre contract with whoever he wants and get a fat signing on fee.

Not quite. Can only sign outside of England in January on a pre-contract. And to be fair, he would be amazing at Celtic or Rangers.

Red has always been part of our heritage, we were wearing red and white as our main kit when Steve Bloomer made his debut, red and white were our colours for five seasons then, long before we ever wore black and white, Hector scored plenty of his goals in the red of Derby, Dave Mackay even lead us out as second division champions to play against Millwall in 1969 wearing the red of Millwall, we borrowed QPRs away shirts for a game !

good news is heritage colours are coming back so keep an eye out for a splash of colour !

    Luckily, we've learnt.

Very much seems that way, not even the usual Twitter noise to support such a statement. So either @Nuwtfly knows something no one else seems to, or they’re randomly dropping unsubstantiated comments into the thread for their own amusement, which strikes me as odd but not surprising given how folks can choose to behave.

I hope he does, more so for the absolute existential crisis some poster would have over Warne's pulling power, rather than for actually getting Roberts!

With Cardiff changing their manager, I wonder if Warne might consider seeing if they'll let Kion Etete out on loan next season.

Derby born striker who they signed from Spurs last season, somewhere between 6'3" & 6'5" tall depending on the source

Didn't really score many last season (3 goals and 1 assist in 1219 minutes) but hey, he won 51% of his aerial duels last season and that now seems to the only thing that matters when thinking of who we can sign up top!

It’s in the definition of good people. Which is apparently people that can work with the management team.

How is that being defined?  In depth psychological analysis and profiling? How is that possible over such a large data set?

Or is it based on a ten minute conversation with Warne?

Sounds like you’ve created a significant problem in your head without any evidence to back it up before the window has even opened, let alone shut.  You’ve got a problem with Warne’s personal judgment and supposed psycho-analysis based on a couple of comments he’s made in interviews… my god that is next level of nitpicking

Saw the thread title and I really should’ve known better.

Brighton announced Pedro from Watford weeks ago. Mac Allister , Keita ,Tielemans, Traore, Pontus Janssun , Rodrigues a bloke called McGoldrick and many many more. All out of our league I know.

So a handful, none of which in our league, out of every club? Not exactly a a tidal wave is it?

    You could & probably should.

As it comes to player evaluation - any player signed that go on to do well that we could've been in the market for should be an indictment on the club. Any player that we sign and ultimately fails to perform is also an indictment on the club.

In the most simplistic way, any player who comes into this division, who we could've signed, and does well -

It comes down to three points -

    1) why weren't we looking at them? Are we casting the net wide enough - if a rival in this league was able to scout him then why weren't we? A failure on the technical scouting and recruitment side most likely.

    2) we were aware of the player, but after review deemed him not good - well, he's gone on to perform very well so what processes were followed out to come to the conclusion that player X wasn't good enough.

    3) we were aware of the player, we did want him to sign but couldn't get him through the door - why is another team in this division able to win a player's signature over our own. A higher division, more money, etc, fine. We then have to look at how we sell the club to players.

If the above 3 processes are fine tuned, along with coaching, then we should never make a poor signing and we shouldn't ever let a player slip through the net and join a rival that we would've been useful to us.

My point with Rodrigues: according to Leigh, we weren't interested, which is fine but if he does turn out to be a very good player at this level then we have failed on point 2. If we were interested then we've failed on point 3. We know that point 1 was covered as Warne went to watch the National League final.

I get that, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. If he's a success at Oxford, there's no guarantee he would here - differing systems, pressure, expectations etc.

Similarly, he could bomb at Oxford but could've been great here. Football just isn't that straight forward.

That's the point - if he goes to Oxford and does well then we have to ask questions of the recruitment team. They need to prove they can evaluate talent properly hence why we need to wait and see how he does before having an appropriate opinion. If he does poorly then you have to praise them for not going after a player who would've ultimately offered nothing.

Don't understand this point. If this is the stance you take, you may as well say this with any signing made from League 2 and below into League 1 or higher.

It’s rumoured Blackpool paid about £200k to sign him so looks like good business for them. I take your point that goalscorers CAN cost a premium, but not always the case. Colby Bishop cost Portsmouth a rumoured £500k, Conor Chaplin a rumoured £750k for Ipswich and we signed a 25 goal and a 12 goal striker for free last summer.
Proven goalscorers under contract can cost money, players with potential can cost less, and there are players out there who have scored goals at this and other levels who are available for free or knock down fees allegedly (Alfie May).

Derby all too often end up paying the premium for a player’s second or third transfer. About time we unearthed them originally, isn’t it?

Fair point but still an average of 1 per game sounds mad. In any event, it just goes to show how flawed the stats are. You need to be presented with the need and opportunity to tackle before you can successfully make one. The stats don’t prove this chap is better than Cashin or Fozzy. Same with goalkeepers. I bet there are keepers in the league that made more saves than Wildsmith (I can’t be bothered to check), but that was probably because they were kept busier.

You’re right. Think it was @Ambitiouswho presented some stats on wingbacks, and whilst I do love a stat and it’s a good discussion point, without context they can only be so useful.

For example, if you’re comparing crosses per game, how useful is that if someone with a low amount is tactically not asked to chuck into the box because of the system and type of strikers in the team? Similarly, think it was Sean Clare who had high stats for losing the ball in his own half… now that never sounds good, but what if he was in a team where the wing back position was more defensive than some others and they spent a lot of games under pressure? Would therefore spend much more time in possession in his own half. Just food for thought.
