The club as an entire package will attract players.

Warne is only one small element of that. It starts from the top and encompasses the whole club set up.

If we get promoted to the Championship, of course we will attract decent to good players if we can afford to pay for them.

I partially agree but the manager and his style of play has a huge weighting on it especially when the days of paying silly money/salaries are gone.

  2. Had Rosenoir taken us up which I am 100% convinced he would have done either last season or this season, I would trust him 100% to find players of Championship ability.

On the miracle/fluke Warne Ball gets us up, do you trust him to be able to attract any decent players to this club?

Honestly, there is so much tripe posted in here after a defeat it is laughable!

We've lost back to back league games for the 1st time.

We are 2nd in the table despite having to deal with a lack of attacking options.

Yes, we would all like to see more flair, more attacking football, but we just don't have the personnel for it atm, our financial restrictions have limited who we have been able to recruit and more importantly, IMO, who we were able to keep hold of.

I really wish we had played a 5 at the back last night with the lack of a left back being available, Sibley at LWB and Wilson at RWB would have given us more attacking options IMO, but he chose to play a 4 with Cashin at LB, a 4 that the vast majority are screaming for despite the personnel not being available.

No matter how poor the football is perceived to be by some, we ONLY lost to stupid, amateurish individual errors again, just like at the beginning of the season.

Is it Warnes fault that Wildsmith had another brainfart? We could see from the South stand that when the ball went forward he would never get there in time as he wasn't on his toes in anticipation, so he should have got close and stood his grd to make the player have to beat him.

Was it Warnes fault that the numerous mistakes from individuals cost us the 2nd goal, fgs, I came from us trying to pass it around at the back instead of launching it forwards (what most people complain about as Warne ball.... so it feels like all those moaners got what they deserved by trying to pass it around with league 1 players!).

I for 1 will be there on Saturday and give him my full support, despite not agreeing with some of his decisions,  after all, what do I know compared to the man that has us 2nd in the table?

And for all those that say any other manager would have us 1st, prove it, Where's the evidence? Who's to say we wouldn't have lost more games? Or is it just your opinion, a bit like mine, so worthless other than being an opinion of a fan that has watched thousands of games but never had access to the inner workings of a club out of administration and the coaching badges to allow me to be on the training ground.

Sensible post - so I'll pick it apart a little.

We are second because other teams are atrocious. We have the highest wage bill by a long way - of course that doesn't guarantee success but I do believe we have a number of very good player - its the way they are being told to execute their jobs which is the issue for me.

5 at the back - we struggle to create. 3 Centre backs, two wing backs who often become full backs and two holding midfielders - this is a recipe for not creating - as we have seen multiple times now.

So what/how has Wildsmith been coached by Andy Warrington. Surely after the debacle at Oxford, Wildsmith would have received coaching on what to do in that situation? So poor decision by Wildsmith especially as he delayed his coming out but not being coached very well is he.

Second goal - the pass form Wilson was poor - he gunned it to Ebou Adams but it was not on the ground. why as a team do we seem to put so much focus on getting the direction of the pass correct that anything over 15 yards seems to be a few bounces. Watch Man City play, watch Arsenal, watch Brighton - when they pass to each other the ball stays on the deck. This means the receiving player can control it immediately or make a first time pass more successfully. Wilson hammered it to Adams off the deck. So poor coaching for me again - not to mention the fact that Wilson went backwards. However - I don't have such an issue with that. However - Can you tell me how many times our players actually move into space? They don't - we're static as anything. This is one of the big changes to NML's game - he wants the ball to feet every time - a defender isn't worried about him (or literally anyone) on our team making a run into space.

I'm sorry - our football has been shambolic for most of the season. We win games IMO because we generally have better players who are able to pull bits of magic out and thus deliver - NML being a prime example. Worth noting that the top five contributing players offensively this year are all Rosenoir signings/Academy. (NML, CH, JC, MB and TB). Warne hasn't bought in, as yet, an offensive player able to make any impact in this team. I trust CBT will come good though.

My final point on the coaching (away from the head tennis) - literally how dated and old school is the tactic of when we get a set piece anywhere from about 20 yards inside our half, the tactic is literally put everyone up to their box and just chip a high ball in. That's park football stuff. I cannot remember that being anywhere near successful in goals we have scored this season. I genuinely thought I'd seen a change after Stevenage away - next game goal kicks were being taken short, same with free kicks - CH, MB, NML, EC, CN - they were all allowed to 'play football' - and then we started winning - but now, this has gone out of the window again - and not once did I see Warne last night telling the team to keep the ball on the deck.

if we scrape over the finish line, I'll be amazed but grateful - but with Warne there and his limited repertoire of coaching - we're screwed next season whichever league we are in.

We were looking relatively comfortable until Smith went off, despite not much in the way of goal attempts and Charlton picking up their efforts after HT. The head  tennis was as much down to THEIR tactics as anything - there was often little space to actually bring the ball down without getting crunched.

No - But our defenders were heading it as strong and far as they could instead of heading it to Bird/Smith who were very often just simple lay off headers.

I guess its what you get when you sign players like Bradley.

The amount of points lost form winning positions would suggest that looking comfortable is never comfortable. We should 100% be pushing for that second. By going on a proper offensive, in my opinion we have as much chance of conceding a goal from being offensive as we do from just 'looking comfortable' if you get my drift.

  5. 1Wildsmith - 5 (Cost us a goal by delaying coming out and then being reckless)

24Nyambe - 6 (Not much support in front of him, spotted this by going alone a couple of times)

    7Barkhuizen - 5 (Seems to lack confidence)

    35Nelson - 6

    5Bradley - 5

6Cashin - 6 (Stopping putting square pegs in round holes)

2Wilson - 5 (Although Adams should be controlling the ball - why can't we pass to players with the ball staying on the deck - this is a real bugbear of mine)

12Smith - 6 (Battled well but ultimately not sure what he really offers - he is going to score and doesn't create)

17Sibley - 5 (Left wing, centre mid - all over the place - not his fault)

32Adams - 6 (Some good tackles, but should have done better with the pass to him)

27Blackett-Taylor - 6 (No real time, team don't seem to trust him yet)

11Méndez-Laing - 6 (Again - Always wants the ball to feet, never seems to run in behind much - thats easy to mark against)

    8Bird 🐦 -  5 (Very soft, lost all his 50/50)

25Gayle - 6 (Pleasantly surprised with some of his hold up play but never threatened)

10Waghorn - 5 (No impact of any type)

Second game in a row now I couldn't give anyone a 7. Rather telling that.

That team signed a dozen players in January, got a new manager and drew their last 2 games with the teams sitting 1st & 3rd. They were never going to lie down and die for us.

There wasn't much wrong with our approach until Wildsmith decided to go walkies.

    Much wrong? Wow.

We'd had three shots at half time. We had played head tennis for much of the first half. I think everything was wrong.

    A few points:

    1.  It's an entertainment business.  If the club think they can rely entirely on goodwill to keep people coming in through the gates, they're in for a shock.  And more than anything, playing entertaining football gives you something to fall back on when results don't go your way.  If you play well but manage to lose the game, people are still going to be largely positive.  If you play terribly and lose anyway, then what have you got? Nothing.

    2.  I think there's definitely an argument that going up and coming straight back down is worse than not going up this year, then going up in a season or 2 and staying there.  We are still a "temporarily embarrassed Championship club" in most peoples minds (potential signings included), going up and staying up reinforces that.  Proving that we can't compete at Championship level any more just hammers home that we might end up stuck permanently at this kind of level.  (Obviously I know you can't pick and choose your promotions, you take what you can etc.)

    3.  When did people get so down on the club?  It's like a big chunk of Derby fans have decided that we need to be punished and aren't allowed to have nice things any more.  It's *weird*.  We're not demanding that the club plays like Real Madrid every game, but it would be nice if we actually tried every now and then.  We're one of the biggest clubs in the league, with pretty much the biggest wage bill, probably the best academy and whatever else.  We should be going into games believing we can outplay the opposition, and okay if we can't then we find other ways to win, but we should at least be starting with that mindset.  I find the gamut of "it's League One, we have to play bad football" to  "we can't outplay teams, so we'll have to outrun them" type attitudes pretty sad to be honest.  We should be a team that plays good football and believes that we are good enough to beat teams by doing that.

    1) Agreed

    2) From a business perspective, I believe the Championship will be worth an extra £7-10m in revenue. Of course our costs go up but who doesn't want this.

I'd also suggest - we stay down, Bird is already gone, I am sure Cashin will move on (We just get a decent fee) so what will we be left with? Our better ball playing players will have left (Bird, Cashin, Hourihane), a manager playing lump it football, a depleted squad size, a manager who seems to struggle to attract good attacking players (Which attacking players has he bought in who are a success - even Wilson for all his skill doesn't contribute much in goals/assists). It's a disaster waiting to happen under Warne.

    Okay, I'll be that guy...

Were we terrible tonight?! I don't think so. To my eye we looked the better team and should have won. Not inspiring by any stretch but still the better side with more than enough opportunities to take 3 points.

On Saturday at Barnsley we were equal to them.

I accept we play a fairly pragmatic brand of football under Warne, it's not my idea of entertaining football but not every dropped point has to be used as a stick to beat him with. It's league 1 in the winter, it's going to be ugly at times.

Some people's expectations feel unrealistic given all the circumstances. We are not going to win every game playing total football. People calling for him to be sacked whilst we're second in the league or because their crystal ball says we'll be crap in the championship is frankly bizarre!

I agree that he has to stop tinkering with 3 at the back and stick with some version of 4-3-3 but I don't see that as the primary reason we lost tonight.

We are still second, it is still all to play for.

    Tin hat on.

In my opinion, that only goes to show how low your expectations have dropped.

Tonight was all about head tennis. How far can we head the ball. Not a single player, bar Bird but even he was guilt a lot, tried to play any element of football.

Not a single time in the many many times of head tennis, was Warne in his technical area telling them to get the ball down.

This pathetic brand of football, Lump it high, get a free kick anywhere put it in the mixer, etc is his comfort zone.

Good players have lost the ability to play because Warne doesn’t want them to. Now confidence to play football has gone.

Its depressing. I actually care very little now. Even if we go up, we will 100% be in a relegation battle.

We lost our manager who would have delivered us good football. Now we are left with diabolical football, poor off the field strategy and a 15% hike in ST prices.

If we don’t go up, watch 3000 drop off the gate easily.

Clowes won’t have the balls to get rid of him IMO. It’s actually very sad where we are.

Thought warne hit the nail on the head with his post match comments. Gave away possession far too much and their pressing was very effective.

We were well in the game and individual errors, switching off at set pieces cost us. There was hardly anything in the game, draw would have been a fair reflection of the game but fair play to Barnsley they got over the line. Too many players off it for us, some not helped by having to be played out of position (Mendez-Laing). Bird off it, Wilson really poor until he came alive last 20 mins when freed of his defensive duties, Adams is a brilliant destroyer in midfield but poor with the ball. Not having a striker has hurt us in these two games, seen enough of Gayle to think he’ll get goals, if Mendez clips that ball into Gayle coming in from the left instead of shooting Gayle scores, Mendez cut in at the end instead of using Wilson on overlap, poor decision.

Two very winnable home games now, time for us fans to play our part again like we did against Stevenage.

Still think we can get this done and over the line and enjoy a proper rebuild in the summer free of restrictions.

But you hit the mail on the head there.

Stop playing NML upfront/inside. Put him back where he is more effective…. On the wing.

Elder is absolutely not a wing back. He’s the most ‘stand still’ player in the club. I mean - even if you’re not going to our pace a defender, make a run to create space for someone else. He’s an atrocious player.

However fundamentally we have three centre backs, a left wing back playing left back, two holding midfielders and we wonder why we can’t make an offensive pass and keep hold of the ball.

Excluding Gayle when he came in, I think Sibley tried a couple of times to make a run through (but he needs selling in the summer, where is the Sibley who burst into the scene with the Man Utd/Blackburn games) but for those who said we are Ok, what game were you watching?

The sky highlights show Cashins header off the line, the goal and Birds dragged shot….. thats because that is all we had. 90 minutes of football - three attempts. Sweet jesus.

  10. Anyone confused? Radio Derby/Eric Steel said we changed the formation? I didn’t we think we did - we just bought on Smith and moved Bird forward but it was always being backs.

The only thing we probably did was told NML to go out wide a bit more?

Did we go to four at the back? Was Elder (who I thought was awful) or Cashin Left Back?

It’s going to be a long run in.
