Paul Warne deserves credit for getting us promoted. Doesn’t really matter how, his goal was to get us promoted and he has achieved.

But he will need help this summer. This current side under Warne finishes bottom three next season.

If we stick with Warne, he will need seven or eight new signings to give us a chance.

I think new players is a given.

What will need to change and he needs to adapt is a better style of play. We had less possession today than Cambridge, a team which had 36% possession against Bristol Rovers in their previous game.

If we adapt the playing style of this season, even with slightly better players, then we won’t progress and next season will be a struggle.

His form has been abit up & down at times this season but as it stands he has the joint hightest number of clean sheets in the league, he is joint with Jensen for Lincoln but Wildsmith has played 5 less games.

So a clean sheet vs Carlisle (or Jensen conceding for Lincoln) will mean Wildsmith gets the golden glove this season which is a very good achievement for him & us.

This is a testament to Nelson and Cash for me.

We still need to work on a lot of things but 100% agree on throw ins - we are rubbish. Other teams don’t seem to have a problem but invariably we lose the ball, either through a bad throw which the recipient can’t control easily, a poor return to the thrower or lack of options to throw the ball to. Don’t see it should be too difficult and Warne has mentioned it several times.

prefer to score from a set piece than get a throw in right. Can’t e have both?

Also I can’t remember too many goals scored from a direct free kick. Bird springs to mind but can’t recall any others. You would think with Hourihane and Ward we would get a few more.

Yep - only 1 free kick scored directly all season (Bird). So everything else is goals from corners or set pieces. Makes the stat more remarkable.

Only if you want to stick rigidly to a 352, which Warne hasn't. CBT would fit into a 343, 442 or 424 depending on the opposition. Playing 4 at the back relies on more solid fullbacks, but unfortunately Nyambe, Fozzy and Elder are all out injured. The addition of Thommo in midfield worked well, but if it didn't, Warne could have changed it with the personnel on the bench.

Perhaps he could have brought CBT on as a sub towards the end, but maybe Barks benefitted a bit more, coming back from injury.

I don’t think a player such as CBT signs without an assurance of where he fits into the team. I don’t think we should waste 10k a week on a player who doesn’t play.

Wasn't going to do it but was awake early, so I thought I would compile a list of the experts from yesterday...

To be fair I was expecting that.

However, to be a miserable git, we won because of set pieces. We created nothing from open play in the first half. The first corner was won when NML went out to the wing into his natural position.

Second half was better as the game was more stretched and they were tired but we still didn’t score from open play.

Of course a win is a win, and I’ll take it as I want to be in the Championship next season but I stand by my comments - that line up and that formation doesn’t score goals. Other teams won’t gift us so many corners and have a goalkeeper who is rooted to his line. As another poster on here said, if we did it to exploit a recognised set piece defensive set up from them, then good job.

I think too many people are reading too much into Warne's personal thoughts on the likes of Bradley and CBT.

I think that their inclusion and exclusion from the team today is down to how he felt that the team would perform best as a whole. I said before the game that we would go back to 3 CBs, because Wilson and Sibley are more comfortable playing with that extra CB to cover them. Then you add the extra legs of Thommo in midfield to make the midfield stronger, you have to lose a wide player.

But it does make the signing of CBT pointless if you want to play three centre backs.

Same lineup and setup as Northampton besides Smith for Hourihane

                        Wildsmith

           Nelson    Bradley    Cashin

    Wilson                                    Sibley

                   Adams      Smith

                        Thompson

                NML            Collins

    Fixed that for you.

                     Wildsmith

    Wilson Nelson Bradley Cash Sibley

            Tommo Adams Smith

The thing is, I don't think that our fullbacks are good enough defensively in a back four, when having to go forwards as well, the extra help from the 'spare' cb gives me a bit more confidence.

That extra help comes from having two holding midfielders, otherwise why have two holding mids?

What sort of 3 at the back? Fozzy, Cash, Nelson, with each of them making regular visits to the oppo’s box? Served us pretty well until Fozzy was crocked. And where are your midfielders sitting in this 3 at the back? The obsession on here with formation is bewildering, far more important is what field positions players take within the formation. And if those 3 are fit imo we want each of them at CB

Well Cashin is the only one who ventured forward a little but that was it. Fans are obsessed with the wingbacks Wilder used to play at Sheff Utd but there the centre backs on either side (Basham etc) regularly used to be making overlapping runs to the bye line.

Secondly - our three at the back often had two holding mids to go with it. Adams and Smith are holders, CH is more a holding player now, Fornah is more defensive than offensive. So together with the Wing backs often playing like full backs, we we just left with three offensive players to do anything and the lack of options for our defenders to pass to was alarming.

For me, we just don’t have options, attacking flair or ability by pass/move (as Warne can’t coach pass and move as a way to create space and opportunity). So our tactics are try and give it to the wingers and hope they create something or win a second ball that’s lumped into the channels. Therefore, as Nelson and Cashin are very good defenders in this league, I just want more forward players on the pitch.

  10. Frustrating when a batter (Reece) in this case doesn’t get off the mark after 12 balls. I just find it inevitable that you eventually get out if you don’t be more aggressive.

As I write this also Came is 18 from 84 balls - I’m going to predict he will be out before he gets to 30. If you don’t attach and score quicker, eventually you succumb to a decent delivery.

    Yes.

Do you think if we get promoted to the Championship we will be using the same players? The ones that have all come through the academy or have been free signings?

I think we use the same tactics.
