It really doesn't matter what we do. If the US, China, India, and the emerging global south don't significantly pitch in to net 0 then we will likely be in big trouble. It's okay to say we should be providing an example (and yes, we should within reasonable adjustments), but the idea that will give us any kind of influence on these countries is a little fanciful. Countries will act in their own self-interest, some will see the need to develop economically now and then fund defensive measures in the future, others will decide to try to limit future damage.

We are not sure about future hardships because of the change in climate for precisely the same reasons why you say someone in 2012 cannot talk of renewables now. Climate scientists are not prophets on every subject, they merely speculate what kind of changes we can expect to see. How we deal with that will inevitably be subject to unknown and numerous technological changes that could change how we live and how we live with climate change.

There's one issue with this; it's just not true. We aren't hardwired to gain as much money as we can, and it certainly is not everyone's primary life goal. I'm not sure who you spend time around or how many people you know, but basic observation of human behaviour demonstrates this is simply incorrect. You oftentimes say this forum isn't about accumulating money and even costs you money to run, if acquiring resources is your hardwired primary motivation then why do you run it? It wouldn't make any sense unless we aren't hardwired to simply accrue capital and instead desire other things as well.
Additionally, money is a socio-political construction, not a biological imperative, unlike food or sex. There may be an argument to say many of us strive to acquire additional resources until we become comfortable and even desirable to others, but there is also a law of diminishing returns i.e., once you acquire a sufficient amount the desire to keep accumulating generally weakens, and other factors come into play. There are plenty of examples of people selling businesses or taking early retirement once they feel they have enough to be comfortable. I know a fair few people who are exchanging bonuses or pay raises for additional time off work.

Mbappe would be an idiot to take the offer. He doesn't need the money and at this stage in his career taking a year out is a massive hit professionally no matter how you try and spin it. He'll earn all the money he'll ever need at both PSG, Real Madrid, and other sponsorships.

Yeah, this is precisely the reductive view I do not agree with as I laid out in my first response to you. I'm not going to repeat as you have a view that won't shift which is fair enough.

Not sure why anyone would go to Saudi while in their prime. Yes, the money Mbappe would be on is out of this world, but he's already made a fortune which he'd struggle to spend in 10 lifetimes. How much more money do these people need? Henderson going there is another one. He could have played a significant role as a squad member at Liverpool, maybe winning another trophy or two, which he could regale with the grandkids. What's he going to talk about that part of his career now? How he played in a dodgy league because he wanted another few million in the bank, burying the twilight days of his England career in the process. This was also the bloke who got annoyed at fans' protests to the players over the proposed super league and apparently wanted no part of it....

Unfortunately, these players are a generation who often put the material above other considerations. If you're a top top player now the money you earn in 5 years is more than enough to secure you and your family for the rest of your life. Yes, your career is short, which is why the priority should be squeezing every last ounce out of the experience of being a professional athlete. Surely, that is more important than whether you have a 6 or a 7 at the head of god knows how many zeros.
Saudi is spending a lot of money trying to make the league desirable. However, taking over an anaemic PGA tour and remoulding the footballing hierarchy is a whole different ball game. While they're making waves now and will do for the next 2-3 seasons, I struggle to see an actual shift in footballing power. No one gives a damn about these clubs, and I can't see how anyone will give a damn in the future. The average attendance is around 10,000 per game, and they're not developing regionally, which would be the smart thing to do.
They'll keep buying big-name players at the tail end of their careers to try and kick-start something, but I can't see it rivalling European football any time soon. No champions league, and likely the top national teams will not be picking players who go over there once they make the move will prove decisive. As soon as Uefa put the screws on the Superleague, it stopped dead in its tracks, precisely because it meant if they did go through with it, removal from every structure that's been put in place for over 50 years. That's not to say Uefa won't create a Superleague (they have in all but name) but that it will only ever take place on their turf.

I don't play a ton of fm now but started a save as Northampton. I'm currently in the year 2026-2027 second in the championship with 58 points from 26 games after losing the playoff final in 2025-2026 to miss out on three consecutive promotions. Ditched the 4-4-2 diamond and 4-3-3 wide to play a 3-2-2-1-2 dynamic system. Sold 2 players for a combined 8 million to bring in 9 newcomers to bolster my squad from a paltry 19 to 26.

There's nothing sinister behind it. We're just seeing the end of a 13-year-old administration out of ideas facing a structural economic crisis around 15 years in the making. Everything is breaking around us (Trains, NHS, Education, Housing, Roads etc. etc.) and the Truss disaster severely limited our ability to fix things. You add in the additional expenditure the government spent over covid and is still footing in plaster measures and we have a high tax high spend ineffective government.

Reading this piece brings that year flooding back and makes you quite emotional when thinking about it. The bond and unity between staff, players, and fans was unlike any other since I've been a derby fan. The games against Birmingham and Fulham stick out in particular as real 'wow' moments that made you believe there was no way the club could possibly sink under the mountain of debt.
But it was also the year of doom scrolling at 2.00 am searching desperately for updates as yet another bidder or deadline had been and gone. I'm so grateful to have someone like Clowes at the helm who'll look after the club's legacy and not gamble it on a hope of promotion.

This is turning into a really positive transfer window and we look like 1 or 2 signings away from a relatively formidable team at this level. I feel the squad looks a lot stronger than last season already. We do need strikers (another 2) and a hard man in midfield but once we have those I'm feeling good!

I thought we should have held onto knight unless 3 million was offered and take the gamble on promotion this season. But, given Kane Wilson's arrival I can see why the club have moved the way they have. This is the sensible move in the end. Knight is a great utility player but apart from brief spells didn't light up the pitch. I still think a period higher up the pitch would have seen his movement and work rate go really nicely in a warne side but we'll never know.

Anything less than promotion is not okay. The league is so incredibly weak this season, and if we don't get out of it then Warne should be let go. It's really that simple I think.

welcome to the forum @JakeDCFC It's great you were drawn in by our famous ram! Having been following derby for 20 years I can attest it's full of frustration, disappointment, heartbreak, and the odd brilliant moment. In fact, in the 20 years I've been following derby rarely has there been a dull season. But you'll be joining a club with possibly the most loyal fans in the country who are full of passion and will join you for your rollercoaster ride of being a derby county fan!!

Welcome Jake, always good to welcome new folks.
I think the joining ritual has remained unchanged since i joined the forum in 2010. Basically you're expected to score a few points by infringing some of the many random forum norms that are enforced by David and his private militia of jackbooted moderators. Then join in some random punning, tolerate i-ram sniping from the comfort of his leatherette recliner and generally muck in.
At the moment we're all wetting our pants because in our UK version of the draft (called the "transfer window") we have not yet done any deals so we barely have a team to put out. Hence we're dividing into pro and anti-Warne camps and in the early skirmishing staging before all out civil war.
Think Trump and MAGA but with warm beer and funny english accents.

    Enjoy....🤣
