I’ve been reading the FA rules and, as far as I can see, there doesn’t seem to be any specific rule that says the player has to be last man. It looks like the ref should only take into consideration nearby defenders. The ref might that decided that having a defender on the line wasn’t good enough to avoid a red. Having said that, given it was only the slightest of touches, I don’t see how it could be argued Curtis denied him an obvious goal scoring opportunity. It wasn’t enough to cause him to fall over or even break his stride but, I guess, you’re never going to win an appeal on that basis.
Here is an extract from rule 12:
Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.
The following must be considered:
distance between the offence and the goal
general direction of the play
likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
location and number of defenders
 

Under my own personal circumstances...
Cost is not an issue (Per sé!)
The name of the league we are in is not an issue.
I have nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon... Sunday lunchtime... Monday evening... Whitsuntide... Eid... Third Tuesday of every month at 05:00 hours... Winter solstice... All Hallows eve... etc...

Wildsmith will be first choice goalkeeper and deservedly so.
Time will tell on everything else. Who wants to stay? We don’t know. Who does Warne want to keep and see as part of his plans? We as yet don’t know.
I think the first thing I would be looking to do is tie down Forsyth and McGoldrick for another year. Both of them are absolutely top professionals and will be mainstays in the team if they decide to stay.

I don’t want Wednesday to go up, but at the same time I do. They’re the only team that can compete financially so it would be better if they were gone.
Disappointing end to the season, but we’ll be okay. Next season is a where the hard work starts.

I’m not too down. It’s a pity but in reality we were short of pace, power and finishing up front, short on numbers in general and short in wide defensive positions. Small squad with a few quality players. Nearly made it and they all worked their socks off. I just hope we can keep Cashin, Knight and Wildsmith. Pretty sure Didsy will stay for an Indian summer because of the locality and he’s clearly enjoyed himself. To those not liking the football, truth is there isn’t a Warneball yet. There were games where we played long and ugly - and looked lousy at it. There were also games where we did tippy tappy and looked more than respectable. We have in all those games looked hungry which you need if you want to succeed. 
Ack .. you know what, I am looking forward to pre season, transfer chatter and planning for the next phase of our recovery. 
 
If we look at the hand of cards we had 12 months ago I’d say we played them as well as could be expected. I am not quite as edgy about players being nicked for rock bottom prices because the market and the game has changed since Covid. Unless a prem or parachute club wants someone I don’t think there is as much money around as folk think.

Yer we need some new players B4 that's for real. I hope the ones you mentioned stay with us.
People can start slagging Warne after he's had a proper transfer window and got in the players he wants and results aren't where they should be.
Until then they need to wind their necks in.

I thought we looked by far the better team when we had 11 on the pitch and even with a man down we still created some good chances. For me that's very encouraging for next season and hopefully we can make a serious run for the autos. Disappointed today but unusually for me, optimistic for next season.

At least we still have a club.
