Turk Thrust got a reaction from I know nothing in Ancestry/MyHeritage DNA
I took DNA tests from two sites some years ago. They tied in with each other sort of.. 70% Germanic (Anglo Saxon and Danish), 15% Celtic, 8% South Asian, 6% Spanish, or Italian depending which site you look at, and the rest “other”.
fits in with what I know. My great grandmother was a Gujarati who married my great grandfather who was in the Sherwood Foresters based in India. The Spanish or Italian bit is a mystery but it only takes one trader a thousand years ago from far flung lands who had a fling with a local woman….. I’ve traced one bit of my family tree back to c1720, all farmers in and around Derby but my mum’s side is Welsh. My maternal grandad’s name was John Bach Pugh and his dad was John Bach Pugh (no imagination these Welsh) who came to Derby from the valleys to work at Ley’s. There’s also some Scottish in there as well from the Gunn clan. I’m a real mongrel.

A 1924 entry in Evelyn Waugh's diary states that an English High Court judge, presiding in a sodomy case, sought advice on sentencing from the Lord Chancellor, Lord Birkenhead. "Could you tell me," he asked, "what do you think one ought to give a man who allows himself to be buggered?" Birkenhead replied without hesitation, "Oh, thirty shillings or two pounds; whatever you happen to have on you."

One club pleased about the postponed fixtures is the Red Dogs, damaging defeat to Bournemouth, Leeds have been good at Elland Road, another defeat in coming and the pressure mounts. Now he has an extra week to work on integrating his squad of 176 players.

I agree, people wouldn’t want to read bad things about a death in their family, we don’t want to read things about our Queen.

Made the mistake of coming on here then on Twitter.
Was saddened by the predictably small minded and pathetic comments on Twitter as sadly that's the status quo but was more disappointed by similar petty comments on here.
Did think that at least some of our forum members would have a bit more class but sadly not.

We had better hurry up with this global warming, we are due an ice age in the next 80,000-100,000 years. We have had five ice ages in 4.5 billion years, non man-made. I wonder who was to blame for warming us up from the last one, dinosaur farts maybe.

I’m trying to be clever and incorporate Northern Irish town names in jokes. I know what you’re thinking, “is there Enniskillen that?”

I’m a STH there. £160 for over 65s! Great ground but beer (well it’s only lager and it’s only Fosters) is £7.50 a pint! And a hot dog for £8.00. I prefer Orient round the corner with its CAMRA winning bar, and it’s incredibly friendly and knowledgeable crowd.

On the subject of Americanisms being slowly absorbed into British English, we should remember that many words we use are Americanisms that have successfully invaded British English. The list of them is lengthy—and includes “lengthy,” as well as “reliable,” “talented,” “influential,” “realistic” and “tremendous”: “All of these words we use without a second thought. Those seemingly innocuous words caused fury at the time in the 19th and 20th centuries. “Hospitalisation” is a more recent one as is “tailback” .
however some of the very recent ones are not if the same calibre and are just silly
