  1. Exeter form team in the league recently beaten Barnsley and Posh. Not only beaten, but swept aside. This is a statement performance. How can you not get behind Warne and the team after this. Yes we need to follow up with a win against Stevenage but most of the people I was debating with on Sunday didn’t think we had that performance in us. We are right in this!!

Some excellent performances, adams is an excellent signing, max was outstanding tonight, Mendez ruthless and Collo a war horse who got kicked from pillar to post but led the line brilliantly. CBT clearly not right yet and struggling with niggles but if the affect of having him means Barkhuizen performs like that then that’s a win also. That 45 from Barks was the best I’ve seen him play. Brilliant!!

The doubters even need to give Warne the credit he deserves tonight.

The thing is, I don’t think the England job has the same sort of prestige as it once did. 10-15 years ago moving from Aston Villa, Newcastle or Spurs to the England job would be a step up. But now it’s a step down as everybody wants to manage in the PL, and even clubs outside the ‘big six’ are attracting top class managers.

Who would you have replace Southgate should he leave? Eddie Howe would be mad to leave Newcastle.

Could Jurgen Klopp be tempted if he wants a break from club football. There has been talk of potentially Pep Guardiola having an interest after he leaves City (potentially at the end of 2025). But you don’t change managers in the middle of a campaign, only after a major tournament so Southgate either goes after Euros or after World Cup 2026.

Get Klopp in 2024 or Pep in 2026. I don’t see any other standout options.

Hopefully he wins the Euros and decides to stay on.

Isn’t this the argument some are making though? We can’t seem to impose ourselves on games with any consistency. The repeated shouts that this is a poor league/standard read sometimes as an attempt to blame the other participants for our inability to finish them off!

The team isn’t good enough to do that consistently. Clearly. And it doesn’t look like anyone else can. It can for periods in games it managed to do so from Nov to early Jan but since turn of the year we’ve dipped and it’s a bit of a grind. A few injuries in there haven’t helped.

Shrewsbury were hell bent on stopping us yesterday played with aggression and they did their jobs well. It’s the way it goes sometimes.

Well that’s even more worrying that he predicted it and couldn’t work out a way to play around it and beat it🤔

Because the manager plays the game for the players on the pitch doesn’t he?

Tell us then what Derby is like playing under Warne….in your own words 😊

A competitive league one outfit second in the league. Some performances this season with ultra aggressive pressing and free flowing football when allowed to.

The standard of the league is pretty poor and the matches can be difficult to watch. It’s a league problem. We need to get out of this league.

The point I was making in the post you refer to is not once have I seen this Warne team persistently play aimless long ball and the ball being in the air more than on the ground. To say so is just untrue and a lazy stereotype based on Warne’s perceived style at Rotherham. Recent games I’ve seen centre halves split and Vickers playing the ball out to the side of the box then into midfield. That’s not lumping it.

  6. This is typical from the FA. Completely useless no bottle or backbone, just want a yes man.

However fortunately Southgate is a man of principle and dignity. He has said before he doesn’t want to overstay his welcome and again he was playing down staying on by saying let’s see how we get on. If we don’t win the Euros I think he’d move on of his own accord.

He’s done an outstanding job for England, thought we were unlucky in Qatar v France if we’d won that (and could’ve gone either way and we were arguably the better side that evening) we could have gone on to win it. It was right he was given the Euros given it was a short turnaround of only 18 months from World Cup.

He needs to win the Euros now, this team is ready (injuries permitting) and if he does then he should be given the option to take us to the World Cup if he wants it.

Wait - you mean there are restrictions on how many passes we can take before we lump it aimlessly forward?

    Curse you, EFL!

Clearly you don’t watch Derby then when you come to that conclusion about us aimlessly lumping it forward. I keep looking for this long ball game Warne supposedly plays and in 18 months or so of him being here. Haven’t seen it.

Burton was ok first half but we were abysmal second half and were hanging on a bit towards the end. I think you are struggling a bit if you are including that game 😊

55 mins until an individual error for a goal gave them hope followed by a quick equaliser, caused by more individual errors,  a game we were in complete control of. Let them back in but found a way to get the win.

75% of the teams in this division are under permanent restriction.  If they turned over 50% of what we did they'd s*** their pants with joy.

Limits what we can do against the 25% of teams we’re battling with for promotion though doesn’t it.

And a fair chunk of budget still made up of Liam signings. More freedom to wheel and deal pay transfer fees etc would enable us to get the young talents from league 1 and below. Blackett-Taylor is the only one we’ve managed so far, Posh’s team is stacked with them, and both Bolton and Pompey are spending cash outbidding us for players.

What have you seen then? How would you describe the majority of our performances? Off the top of my head we played well v Barnsley at home and Oxford away. We had a good 25 mins v Posh. I can’t remember any other games at all that we have controlled and won comfortably. I haven’t seen all of the games on tv, but quite a few. Perhaps I have just been unlucky 😊

Solid. Competitive against teams in this league, to a standard that is very good compared with teams in this league. Don’t know what else you can expect, I haven’t seen us battered by anyone except Blackpool in the League Cup. We have the best goal difference in the league, the second highest scorers, best or 2nd best defensive record.

You can throw Blackpool (A) Posh (A), Northampton (H), Exeter (H) Lincoln (H) Orient (A) Wigan (A) Burton (H) for 55 mins onto the good performance list.

Just a reminder. Paul Warne also has a 100% record of being relegated from the championship at every attempt

With comfortably the lowest budget in the league each time. Got them looking reasonable before we took him, they stayed up in some way due to the wins he got early season, they’re now marooned at the bottom their normal position in the championship.

I’ve said I’m not convinced he’s the man to take us forward in the championship but in case we need reminding - we’re not in the championship are we?

But somewhere down the line isn’t going to the football about being entertained.? Someone compared watching us at the moment is like a visit to the dentist 🤔 Someone also asked when was the last time we played well at home. I honestly can’t remember. The fact I haven’t been this season speaks volumes. I travelled to away games under Jewell and Tan Man….just can’t muster up any enthusiasm to watch what is being served up at the moment.

For 55 mins against Burton which wasn’t that long ago. Second half today at times, Cheltenham was poor, but teams are making it difficult. The performances in November and December were probably the best home and away. Barnsley stands out, front foot pressing good football.

That somewhere down the line will probably be when we’re in the championship, if we’re midtable bottom half or fighting relegation and the football is boring then entertainment factor becomes more relevant. Remember the GSE times under Nige when crowds dropped although at home we weren’t too bad under him and we beat the red dogs a few times.

But his tactics are boring and will ultimately drive people away

Anyone driven away from a promotion campaign to try and get out of a god awful league where every team sees you as a cup final and make everything a scrap, to be honest we’re better off without them.

Seen enough decent performances and glimpses of us trying to play but lots of teams try to stop us playing. The Paul Warne style of play thing is a myth down to peoples perception of his time at Rotherham from those who never wanted him here.  Apparently the ball is in the sky more than on the ground at Derby these days with Paul Warne in charge. Not what I’ve seen.

It isn’t Steve McClaren football, nowhere near, but we’re in league 1 still under restrictions, people need to stop comparing us to what we used to be. Yes we want to get back there and is he the man to do it, Jury is definitely out.

In my mind it is bonkers we are having these debates on Warne when we’re second!! Just bonkers.

  14. 2 minutes ago, Jimbo Ram said:

    That’s ok then 😊

Yes it’s means he has pedigree at this level, has us right in the mix in a wide open season with us being second, you’d think we were midtable bottom half by some of the comments.

If he doesn’t get us up this season then questions should be asked. The comments are the same every week and they are lazy. Banging on about style of play even when in some games we’ve actually played good football.

I was all set for him to go after that Stevenage defeat and said he needed an amazing run to keep in the job, he’s had that run and put us right in the mix. I don’t understand those who literally wait for us to drop points (some even don’t wait for that) to spout the same old crap. There are two teams in any game and Shrewsbury made that a right royal scrap and downright ugly, not Warne’s tactics IMO.

I think he will get us up. I think he should get us up, his real test is how competitive can we be with him in the championship and on that I’m not convinced. But while he’s here I’ll continue to back him until it becomes abundantly clear we need a change and right now with us second in the league no one can say we need a change while keeping a straight face.

  15. Just a reminder for some people. Paul Warne has won automatic promotion from this league twice. But if we fail autos, Paul Warne has also won a playoff final in this league. He also won the EFL trophy which I think means he has 100% record in Wembley finals.  Just for those saying he doesn’t have the tactics to win the big games.

I look at what Ipswich did last season and are doing this season and we're a million miles away from what we "could be"

With a £16m wage bill and about £8m transfer spend - in league 1. Yes no wonder Ipswich did amazing things last season. Their budget was way bigger than everyone.

What they’re doing this season though against those championship budgets is exceptional.

  17. Drop points we have the usual Warne pile on from the same individuals talking about his tactics. Credit to Shrewsbury in their cup final, they made every ball a scrap and I’m impressed they managed that intensity for the whole game. We tried to play and were consistently stopped from doing so, then forced it at times and turned the ball over too regularly and easily. The switch to the back 4 second half helped we gained more control and in a game of few chances we created enough to win but didn’t get that second goal, a few if onlys Wilson hitting the bar, Collo in first half from the ward set piece was an inch wide at the most, a couple of dubious offsides and penalty shouts. Their goal came from nothing, i need to see it back but  Wilson and Mendez lose the ball trying to be too intricate (Nyambe would’ve possibly made a difference in that situation), but then their player has mishit the pull back causing Sibley to slide past the ball and it’s landed perfectly for him to finish it. Real shame thought Wilson had won it and there definitely should’ve been more than 6 minutes added time.

One of those games, we didn’t lose and are still second it’s just annoying that we couldn’t capitalise on our rivals slipping up. This is going to be one close promotion race. Right to the wire.

On the fans today, with the exception of the fans in the North Stand who flooded the exits when Shrewsbury equalised, I thought they were immense. South stand trying to get Paul Warne’s barmy army going all first half, the stadium came alive second half and were with the team (the majority) right to the end. Show frustration at final whistle by all means but the lads need that support every game now.

Yet same Lino allowed their player early in the second half who was clearly offside to run through and nearly score!! Consistency. The officials did not help us today, we should’ve had a pen, they should’ve been down to 10 men, but then to counter that if Hourihane had been sent off for that tackle wouldve had no complaints, definite red for me.
