Great first half in terms of creating chances. What a pass by Bird. Really should be 1 up though. Their pace out wide worries me as the games gets stretched.

Fans have been talking about Sky killing the game since 1993 and in that time we’ve seen our average attendance at a pretty decent level even in the 2nd tier. The bottom line is if we get a team playing half decent football and good results then people will turn up. Middle aged blokes love bemoaning that things ain’t what they were since the dawn of time and we’re probably no different to the folks stood around in the 4th century saying the wheel was the root of all evil to come. Saying that if you’d been unlucky enough to be stuck indoors of a Saturday Evening watching that horrific Michael McIntyre game show ‘The Wheel’ instead of being out for a few post match ales, then you could say they had incredible foresight.

I suppose there is some symmetry in the photo with two of England’s greatest ever goal scorers on either side, two great centre halfs on the inside of them and the greatest ever English management duo to have lived taking centre stage.
Who knows? In 100 years the team might be cheered out to a yet to be invented musical genre of ‘Wayne Rooneys Watching’

Similarly to what I was saying before Cocu left, if you sack Rooney then what?
There’s barely a plan in place now, but guess that happens when you sack a manager let way through and replace him with a rookie because you can’t turn anywhere else. It’s what we’ve got but it’s most likely better than anything else we can get right now.
Unfortunately, i think a few of you want to cut your nose to spite your face!

I can’t, I was merely referring to comments WR made in press conferences about wanting to see his team play in a certain way following the more industrial approach he implemented at the beginning of his tenure.

When Rooney was appointed I wanted to give him a fair crack of the whip but like others accepted we probably made a mistake in not bringing in a more experienced manager as last season panned out the way it did. Since then our situation off the pitch is even worse than we perhaps all realised and changing the current manager to find a new one who might manage the complexities of the current situation off the pitch better than the current one is pretty unlikely. People mention McClaren taking the reigns which is a non starter for me. When Mac managed us before by his own admittance he had an oven ready team ready to go which just need some seasoning. It is widely acknowledged that he is a great coach but if things off the field are slightly iffy he is incredibly flakey and a poor man manager. He is also well known for being a careerist and I don’t think he would have the stomach to take over the current squad because he won’t believe he can do anything with them. That leaves us pondering our reality vs our expectation. Who could we realistically get to come and manage us that wouldn’t be arguably be a) not another huge gamble b). create more upheaval for the players c) attract any kind of player to even consider joining us in the current circumstances.
I don’t buy the argument that Rooney is just creating a story for himself to enable him to walk away reputation intact. He could have done that weeks ago before putting in all the work that goes into a preseason. Outside of DCFC the vast majority would have a sympathetic outlook and the more likely view would be that the club has damaged  Rooney, not the other way around (this isn’t my view btw). I think that he can be given some credit for sticking by the club and more importantly the current players who let’s face it are in a desperate situation and a penny for their thoughts. Do I think Rooney is or will be a brilliant manager? Probably not. Do I think we need to take more risks, throw another curve ball at a threadbare squad lacking in experience and ability to bring in someone else who won’t have the ability to change any of that? Definitely not.

I think the OP has conflated a wider issue with football since the EPL era and what is specifically happening at Derby. The bottom line for any business is that buck stops with the owner, CEO or whoever is the accountable custodian in preserving and growing its reputation, economic stability and responsibility to shareholders & stakeholders alike. If the CEO of any large business invested in stock at an overinflated price that didn’t result in improved performance and then further down the line fell foul to fiscal rules that were in place to protect against such misadventure then they would solely be accountable regardless of customer demands at any point.  The expectation of football fans or indeed customers who receive goods or entertainment from any business are probably quite broad and segmented. If there is popular demand for something the role of any leader is to understand that and take a balanced approach that delivers the best possible outcome for all.

Who knows but I didn’t get that sense. It think if Rooney ended up look to wrangle a payout from a sacking then that would add some baggage to his managerial reputation

I’ve tried to retain a balanced view of Mel’s intentions with regard to the sale of the club in the last year. The club has clearly become a burden he wants to free himself from and that’s understandable but I’ve always been on the side of those that believe he wants the best for the club and wouldn’t sell us to a wrong un. My opinion is shifting as it’s looking increasingly like he wants to cut and run. He might have just got to the point where that many people are slating him already that he has made peace with himself about leaving us in the cart and will just get him sen over to his his timeshare in Benidorm when the travel restrictions are lifted

I think you can say that it’s been a bad decision for both Rooney and the club to appoint him. An experienced manager with pedigree would have had a tough job keeping us up this season but probably would have by sticking with a consistent back to basics approach ( 3 or 4 more draws would have probably seen us safe). WR’s lack of experience caused him to run before he could walk and change the approach from staying solid to playing with a ‘style’ he wanted to see because he arrogantly assumed we were safe. That he wasn’t able to read the signs and see that our football club is the last place to be starting your career in football management is also quite telling.
I don’t think anybody in their right mind will take a punt on him for a while and he will need to go back to being part of somebody else’s coaching set up. I can’t think of any examples when somebody has had such a catastrophic start to a management career and gone on to do well (I’m sure somebody can and will prove that wrong).
