Matchday 8 – Saturday 11th September 1971 & a visit from Stoke to the BBG
Stoke weren’t a bad side, had quality like Gordon Banks & Jimmy Greenhoff in their ranks & won the League Cup later that season. But the Rams were in merciless mood & thrashed them 4-0 in front of 32,545. Goals coming from Todd, Gemmill, O’Hare & Hinton.

    Suffice to say the nationals were reasonably impressed;

Derby's dominant win kept them in 2nd place - Sheffield Utd’s home draw with Spurs meant the gap at the top was cut to 2 points..

Yep. Completely miss the big story, then take it out on Rooney because the people you should be holding to account won't talk to you. Journalists are so scared of having their 'access' revoked that they end up failing to do any actual journalism. But what 'access' do they really have? They just get a free ticket to the match and all these meaningless press conferences. I wish someone had been actually holding the club to account over the last few months rather than cravenly going along with the 'nothing to see here' line.

Didn’t expect 4 points from wba & Stoke. I’ll take that. The players haven’t gave up even if our owner has.

It was the one before (Ostigard on 77 minutes)!
Derby to win, both teams to score, 2+ bookings each team, 4+ corners each team, 50/1!
Confess I took the cash out and settled for £550 on 80 minutes. Wonderful we won and I'll forego the extra £200 for that. Watched us throw away a lead too many times. Brilliant win and I'm very happy. And contacting the administrators first thing Monday morning!

Proud of the squad, management and fans so far today. Could have sulked and let our heads drop. We haven't.

Just made a Jambalaya, watered my beans, tomatoes and chillies. Fittingly, the chili plants that are doing best are called "Armageddon", which tip the heat scale at well over 1 million Scoville units. Even that isn't anywhere near the heat in the depths of football hell I should like Mr Morris to burn in.

Anger really. Fan or not, Mel and co had a responsibility to ensure decisions they made could be backed up long term, and no matter how good something felt in the moment, they were custodians of something they supposedly loved with history.
They got a lot of leeway for those risks other owners wouldn't have received, precisely because they were fans.
That it has ended up like this is a deep and abiding shame, and although I appreciate losing that much money will not be nice and I am sure they are upset, they have failed.
I am also angry at the EFL for being so badly run it has allowed yet another club to go bust. What exactly do they do, other than negotiate bad TV deals and make things worse?

The writing has been on the wall for a very long time. So much chatter about the EFL and amortisation, and other non-cash flow issues. Like any business, paying debt as it falls due is a good yardstick as to the health of a football club, and the competence of its owner. This was an inevitable outcome. I hope somehow the Administrators can evidence some personal liability against the directors, and of course Morris in particular. He shouldn’t be allowed to comfortably watch the clear up process.

Whichever way we dress it up we broke the rules... he bent over backwards to avoid FFP so is it a massive surprise they want us punished... We had to work out an accounting process to work around the rules and sell our stadium so that we could make the signings we have. Ultimately he tried to cheat and he's embarrassed the club and the fans. We'll probably go into league one on the back of his ownership so ultimately I don't blame fans if they want Mel out. Whilst I don't doubt his intentions and commitment to Derby County he has monumentally failed!

Agh, it just makes me so angry. How badly do you have to have run things if you are worth half a billion yet your only choices are to sell the club to whoever will buy (to pay for your expensive mistakes), or to put the club you claim to love in administration, forcing them into a lower league and undoing years of work on the academy/developing players, who can now leave for peanuts? 'The EFL made it hard to sell...' Cry me a river. You are only so desperate to sell because of the consequences of your decisions. It's your mess, no one else's.

I know the blame ultimately is Mel's, but I'd like to see some sort of banner when we go to the Riverside. Asking Gibson if he's really happy he won, and helped in getting many people to lose their jobs.

Still appalled by the total lack of morals and scruples of the owner to abdicate any responsibility for sorting the mess which in part he created.
    Easier to run away. Coward.

Was lucky/unlucky? enough to have breakfast twice with Mel and some top blokes from here.
He impressed with his determination and dedication (backed by putting his money where his mouth is it seemed). I think we were seduced and I think each mistake is easy to overlook when you fall under that spell.
There should be no anger aimed at you or the mods (except the one with his sheriff badge ? ?).
We will all suffer here. I don't even follow The Rams like I used to but this club his the heart of this town.
The Rams are the lifeblood of this city.
Even if you don't love it like you used to. Almost 140 years of history.
140 years how many sons grew up with their fathers at the BBG. How many daughters bonded with their parents while watching Eranio and Baiano?
Who ran wildly across the pitch at the BBG
All that rich history and the heroes that shaped it especially in the 70's.
Now it's all at risk. The history of Clough, Cox and Jim Smith. The history with Forest and Leeds and Leicester.
Names and faces just keep running through my head. Simpson, Auto Windscreens, Taribo, Wanchope's goal, Van Der Laan, Clough, Taylor, Reg, Bald Eagle, Muddy BBG, Sturridge, Kitson... I could go on forever.
All at risk. For what? Who gives a toss what league we play in now.
Feck me, was it all for an ego or what? I don't get it. I genuinely don't understand
I understand that we are Derby though.
Up The Rams! Good luck everyone.

It's not your fault and there is no need to defend yourself Daveo. I disagreed with you about Mel some time ago and have continued to do so but it's obvious no-one but Mel knew we were so close to the precipice. The blame lies with his absolute shameful mismanagement not anyone else.
