    Regarding Jason Knight.

Flynn Downes was regarded as one of Ipswich’s promising youngsters. But with them being in League One, they were pretty much forced to sell him and got just £1.5m from Swansea as he was also going into his last year of his contract.

Anyone expecting Knight to go for big bucks is living in cloud cuckoo land (Roy Keane’s favorite phrase).

Nobody will be offering more than £3m for Knight.

Downes isn’t a regular international, nor did he he have regular championship experience. I do think you’re right, we won’t get mega bucks.

On a side note, I’ve seen P’Boro are potentially selling their 19 yr old centre back Ronnie Edwards. Rumours of bids of up to 10 million. Another club who sells well. Big fees would still be possible, but we have history of selling players at low value. Either that or these players aren’t as good as we think.

All in all, was the prem a bit rubbish this year?

Two very poor sides in Norwich and Watford and in other seasons could well have been scraping towards the Derby total (without hitting it!). Then above them the underachievers of Burnley, Leeds and Everyon who have wildly got their transfer policy wrong this season. That third relegation place could have deservedly gone to any of them. Then after that a slew of wildly inconsistent sides up to 10th who look decent on their day but must be a continually frustrating watch for the fans. Then Brighton, Leicester and West Ham or who for their money spent are doing quite well. After that you’ve got the real underachievers, who are performing similarly to those below with better players until you reach Liverpool and Man City who have comfortably been the best sides. Liverpool have bottle, although I’m not a huge Klopp-ball fan I will admit they pick up results consistently and have top players and City are just City. Did a bit of a tangent but what I’m saying is there are two real top sides and everyone else hasn’t really set the league alight. If I’m really honest, actually thought the covid season was a bit better overall?

Next season does stand a chance of being a lot better though I think. Arteta’s Arsenal are improving, Spurs under Conte are looking…Spursy but Conte is a very good manager, Man U need to turn the corner and Chelsea need to step up under Tuchel. Can West Ham, Leicester and Brighton maintain their form? Newcastle’s Saudi money is going to kick in. Vieira’s Palace will want to improve and then there is serious questions what happens with the rest. Leeds need overhauling and I think we will see whatever Lampard’s actual management potential is. It’ll be tough for the promoted sides to be honest.

Where was I? Oh yeah, this season was poor overall but there is all the potential to be a lot better next season. I’ve not even mentioned Haaland at City!

This season has been one of the best Premier League seasons since its formation. Brilliant drama right up to the final day. It had everything. Next season will struggle to top this one. It’s been very entertaining.

B4 I love ypur optimisum, I'm  threaders with the whole thing.  I just want it done, TBH I'd take anyone who can complete the deal.

Kirchner - No doubt has the passion and enthusiasm, of he can get Rooney to stay 3 years who knows we might have a crack at getting to the PL if he gets a good wind.

Appleby - A really safe pair of hands, hopefully a decent managerial appointment may just see us knocking at the PL door much quicker this time.

Ashley- Will probably take -15pts and write next season off, then pump lots of cash in to fast track us to the PL.

All in all I would probably see Ashley as the one most likely to deliver PL footie quickest....  I also feel he will be the winner, as I can not see Kirchner parting with £22M for the stadium.....

    Somebody just buy us!!!!!

What’s the point of Ashley accepting a 15 point deduction and then pumping money in to fast track us? Surely you’d pay enough to avoid the 15 points. It’d be a lot quicker. All hypothetical as he probably won’t bid anyway. We just need to hope CK can pull summat together. A BIG 48 hours awaits.

  4. Great effort by the people involved to get the display organised yesterday. The final product didn’t quite look right though. The ‘Bleed black and white’ didn’t look right. Not sure about the plastic black and white things either. I think loads of flags and surfing the original banners would have been better.

  5. As a collective the team that Cox assembled with Pickerings millions. Short, Charles, Johnson, Kitson, Pembridge etc. All had good Premier League careers, but didn’t gel together. Thankfully Jim Smith worked wonders so we didn’t miss out. Unlike Morris’s mistakes.

I've always thought that we got lucky that the Baggio deal fell through. Baggio was a wonderful player, but in my opinion England wouldn't have suited him professionally or personally and he would've flopped hard. I'm delighted we got Baiano instead, who was also an excellent player, but had the requisite Neapolitan grit to ensure he didn't get pushed around.

Baggio was world class who had a fine end to his career. I think he went to Bologna instead, but was brilliant for them and went to Inter Milan. He’d have been unbelievable if we’d have pulled it off. He would have been the biggest signing in our history. Baiano was great for the season and a bit though.

I suppose if Forest went up we'd get the entertainment of watching Leicester play the Glenn Close role in a football version of Fatal Attraction, trying desperately turn a one night stand into a permanent relationship.

It'd be far more entertaining to watch them bottle it though.

It looks like Match of the Day are trying to help Leicesters cause in tying to make this a ‘Derby’. What a joke of a list this is!

Think we lost 6-4 to Chelsea, after being 4-3 up.  Not sure how, but I think Shilton was past it by then.

    What a game this was!

3-1 down to then going 4-3 up. Absolute scenes in The PopSide and C Stand to then an almost immediate complete collapse and losing 6-4.

    1988/89 - Derby finish 5th on 58 points

    1990/91 - Derby finish 20th on 24 points

I'd be interested to know from fans what exactly happened to cause such a catastrophic drop off. From what I can see the squad in 1990 is largely the same as the one that finished 5th. Arthur Cox was still the manager. Yes, the troubles with Maxwell were causing chaos off the field and the narrative is that his decreased investment caused relegation, but which players actually left? There's so many things that don't make sense. Deano scored 17 goals in the relegation season. We shipped an average of 2 goals/game despite having 2 England internationals in the defence.

Arthur Cox worked miracles getting us to 5th in 1989. A couple of years later things fell apart:

Paul Goddard left, he was brilliant with Saunders. Harford came in but wasn’t as good.

Injuries : We had loads of ACL injuries. McMinn being a big one. Mark Wright never had a regular partner.

The squad was tiny, Jason Kavanagh, Mark Patterson etc covering whereas before it was players like Hindmarch or Blades.

This coupled with the unrest off the pitch, players like Hebberd were past it by then too.
What could have been, if we’d built on the team that finished 5th. Cox wanted players like Dennis Wise, Andy Townsend to boost the team but wasn’t allowed.

As I recall it was the other way around.  Wanchope was a basketball player by trade who showed a bit of unpredictability and was a makeweight.  Strange how things happen.  After the last 12 months I fully expect Kubic and Knoflicek to turn up again and disappear.

In the few times I saw him, Solis actually looked very capable

  11. GK - all generally OK. Steve Sutton wasn’t great, but not bad.
DF: Alex Watson on loan from Liverpool. Simon Webster - terrible.
MF: Harkes, Pickering, Ian Wilson - so old he could hardly move. Glyn Hodges was a bit porky too!

    Att: All ok. Beck terrible.

I think the precedent was set with Peter Daniel who won it after deputising for McFarland for the majority of the season even though Colin Todd won the PFA player of the year.

Good point. That would explain the uninspiring list of players at times (without wishing to sound harsh).

To be fair, poty tends to go to the player that’s tried the hardest and put a shift in consistently, not necessarily the most glamorous or obvious players. So it’s not that surprising.

I always thought it went to the best player, weird.

The WC semi and the ricochet off Parker was an embarrassment though. Even I can walk backwards quicker than that.

Shilton was good but overrated in my opinion. Even at his peak playing for that team down the road, he made some howlers - who could forget how he dealt with crosses in the 4-1. Imagine Roos doing that.

Nah. Give me Poom or Boulton.

I agree. Poom’s the best keeper I’ve seen for Derby, class!
Shilton was a great and still had some great games for Derby but was past his best. It made me laugh watching him take goal kicks, it was like an U10s game, he struggled to kick it further than about 40 yards, regularly failing to make the centre circle!
