Imagine spending not insignificant chunks of your budget bringing in ‘Championship’ defenders and having to constantly replace them with a player you were clearly trying to phase out.

Forsyth, what a player he’s still showing himself to be.

Seriously though a defence of Smith Foz Cash Sibley was so much more solid than this.

Agree with some of this, he played a huge part in the building of the completely unjustified hype around Rooney, too.
Not a big fan of the Athletic personally and certainly think Conway got an extraordinary amount of praise for doing…very little. Whereas Ed Dawes got absolute pelters for being one of the first to come out and reveal what was hiding beneath the surface…

Just a lack of pace all over the pitch. It’s the main issue. Look to the bench to change it… still no pace.
Cashin had no clue yesterday what to do with their winger who was pulling him wide and got behind Forsyth. Smith is slower than slow, Hourihane can’t move with the ball, Collins gets the ball in acres on a counter but can’t make use of it… could go on.
We will beat teams with what we have, but we will struggle to achieve what we want to without a couple of players with pace signed in the next couple of weeks.
Will say, though, yesterday we made so many unforced errors which can’t be pinned on the system. The two goals were errors, so many off target passes from the likes of Cashin and Smith. Static movement. All things which aren’t due to the system. Just poor execution.

No, I don’t. I think he’s 37 year old and hasn’t looked his old self since they got promoted to the Prem (the first time). I don’t think he’s got the legs to get by any defender in this division. Warne seems to be bringing in someone to be a poacher? That’s all Collins can do so what’s the point?
Not impressed by Warne’s recruitment in forward areas at the moment if this happens

Bird just doesn’t have enough impact on games for me. Passes safely very well. Rarely takes on a risky ball. Doesn’t run into the box from midfield hardly at all, has a great shot, but see it fleetingly.
Is not great defensively either, very one paced.
is a nice footballer but need a bit more than that.

Again, you're spinning it. He felt he wanted a chance elsewhere and rejected it. You've got no bloody clue what they offered him, you didn't even know he'd been offered a deal until just now.

You can't really, the line that he was released was demonstrably wrong. Hence why I replied to you. That's not an opinion.

Few weeks back Derby were like mid-league and we ourselves at the top, and now look at it.   I mean seriously, what the hell.
If you beat Port Vales tomorrow and we lose to Morecambe then the distance will be reduced to just one point, unbelievable just a month or two back.   Yeah, I'm worried.  It's got to be said.    You got a game in hand over us also.
I take the opportunity to congratulate Rams on moving up from mid-league to the verge of an automatic promotion opportunity, there's no malice or ill-feeling or why should there be, but a lot of our fans are getting mighty antsy about the time ahead having lost a number of valuable points in recent games.
I think teams like us, you look at the top two automatic promotion places and question can we really make it, you know, invade that territory and stick with it.    In truth I answer for my own team No, not sure how you feel about your own club endeavors for the months ahead, but you got to realize, it's a tough ask for sure.
Probably said before teams like us, of previous stature and accomplishment, don't really belong in this league.   You know what the worse thing is, being at the very top for certain stages sure that you're going to do it, only to see your team fall away and people are asking questions is the play-offs the best thing to accept even at this stage of this season.
It's going to be an interesting round of games tomorrow for sure.     Mentioned on a Town forum to our own fanbase (that) only the strong and whoever holds their nerve most  (from Plymouth to all top six club names) can, or will, only succeed in terms of a promotion.

Derby, all day, every day.  Would love to see England win the WC but won't upset me if they don't.  Losing at Burton would be far worse for me.

I’ll be one of the first to admit I wasn’t exactly enthralled by the idea of having Wildsmith as a number 1 when he signed. I’m sure many others will be in the same position.
I was expecting and hoping another keeper to come in and that Wildsmith would be a good back up, but obviously that never happened.
I think he’s been excellent this season and is yet to really make a glaring error. For a keeper that’s spent most of his career as a substitute, I think he’s stepped up brilliantly.
He’s been one of our better additions this summer, I feel like he deserves some recognition for how he’s started his time here with us.

Horror mistake from their defender but it doesn’t happen without the lump forward and Collins chasing down, neither of which would have happened under Rosenier…

Paul Warne at his first presser:
"I want to press, I want to get the ball back high, I want to stop counter-attacks, keep attacks going and for that you have to press, you have to be athletic but fundamentally you have to be really good on the ball and I think the lads have been really conducive to what we’re trying to do."
Athletic and a high press, being good on the ball and keeping attacks going are exactly how I want us to play. Let's hope we'll start seeing this on Saturday. We saw this sometimes under Lampard. I remember the Marriott goal at Old Trafford was the inevitable result of incessant pressure - we were unstoppable. They couldn't live with the waves of attacks.
I don't want to see us with the ball around the opposition box only to try to funnel it back to Wildsmith to start again. I don't want to see freekicks in the opposition half get funnelled back to Wildsmith to start again. Ditto throw-ins. If we're to be promoted we have to start looking in the right direction.

Genuine question to people who are criticising Paul Warne for his style of play, how many of Rotherham's league one fixtures did you watch? And how many Championship ones not involving Derby? I feel like it's become a bit of an easy one to throw out there without justifying yourself why you don't like his style of football.

For me, style is irrelevant, results are needed to get out this league. Tapping it around at the back and getting 80% possession but scoring less than Burton isn't going to get us promotion imo. All those moaning about Rowettball, would 100% take that if we were constantly winning games and achieved promotion, anyone who says otherwise is a liar and just being awkward to stand by their silly opinions ?

I think some of us are guilty of letting our like of Liam Rosenior the man cloud our assessment of Liam Rosenior the manager.
If we had appointed, say, Paul Lambert or Aidy Boothroyd or Darren Wassall or Justin Walker, as an interim manager to start the season and had exactly the same performances and results as what we've had this season, would we be saying that this is a harsh decision or would we be saying that it's fair enough given the appointment was only as made as an interim with no promises of getting the permanent gig?

Lac291884 reacted to ANGERMAN1 in Paul Warne appointed as Head Coach
Well, I'm certainly rather happy about this, if many others seem apoplectic.
Everyone continues to stress how much of a 'nice guy' Liam was and yet Millers fans would say exactly the same about Warne. Regardless, being "nice" doesn't make one a good manager. I'd also argue that Rosenior didn't convince me with the way he spoke about the game, as others suggest he did for them.
Also, whilst we could agree that LR was learning, I'd argue it was too slowly. That sounds laughable considering how short a stint he has had as interim manager but he himself has vehemently defended the pathetic decision to fanny about at the back. He was proud of it, yet it couldn't be more clear that this was a foolish move. That is gravely concerning, in regards to LR's future as a competent manager. PW has learned well and Rotherham fans mostly adore him.
Fans will always find things to moan about but so many have been so right in pointing out our failings and imbalances this season and yet a stubborn LR persisted with poor team structures and naive tactical decisions. Again, nothing here shows LR will make a good manager.
So, we come to 'style of play' and I feel we've been quite unanimous in thinking that although we've shown brilliance at times this season, we've played the ball too slowly and predictably too often. Again, in an early interview, LR said we needed to be "more patient" (MORE?!).
For what it's worth, whilst Rotherham tend to play direct, their passages of play can vary and there are many Rotherham fans saying they liked the football their team displayed. I'd take only conceding 11 goals away all season in League 1, as Rotherham did. We might steal some wins away from home then ?
But in all seriousness, I hope this has been agreed (allegedly we approached PW before their game against Boro) and he brings his backroom staff too. Onwards and upwards. I'm even more excited for the rest of the season now. Bring it on!

We won 9 games by 3 or more goals that season and stuffed Hull 5-0 and one stage lost 2 in 24. We scored less the following year under Lampard with Mount and Wilson in the team.  This is all in peoples imagination.  Rowett did a solid job bar a freak week against Sunderland and Burton.
If you want proper hoof ball your probably about to get it I reckon.

I'd like to think that of those (few) players that stayed, their bond with the club and fans meant more than any bond with LR.
If LR continued to play Kinght at RB, Bird alongside another DM, and leave Sibley out of the team altogether, I think all 3 might have been heading for the exit in January.
Hopefully a new manager will get the best out of these 3 players, in their best positions, as they should be the future of the club, not necessarily Smith, Collins and Hourihane just because they were brought in by LR.
The new manager shouldn't have any such issues. He can simply play any player on their merit.

Yes, there seems to be plenty of fans who don't know the meaning of the word 'interim'. Maybe Clowes has accessed the situation we're in and the way things are going and decided to choose a different type of manager.

Wildsmith - 6 (Not a fault for goals, but below average distribution)
Knight - 4 (His worst game this season, gave away penalty, struggled against Diamond, needs to be in midfield)
Roberts - 4.5 (Poor, prefer Forsyth in that position)
Cashin - 6 (Did ok after his poor mistake last week)
Davies - 5 (Just coming back from injury but didn't look his best)
Dobbin - 4 (Gave the ball away far too much and made errors in good positions)
McGoldrick - 5 (Didn't do much when he came on)
Sibley - 6 (Thought he kept the ball reasonably well, didn't create much, brought off too early)
Hourihane - 4 (Has offered next to nothing outside set pieces too many games this season, this game being another)
Mendez-Laing - 6.5 (He troubled the defenders at times, should have stayed onside but couldn't see it too well)
Bird ? - 4.5 (Wasn't at it today, positionally wasn't good, him and Hourihane are struggling as a pair)
Collins - 5 (Not sure whether his goal was offside but good finish, other than that he rarely got involved)
Barkhuizen - 4.5 (Should have finished his chance, did nothing of note other than that)
Osula - 6 (Came off bench and looked ok, did nothing wrong)
