Wasn’t he crap anyway?

How do we know we were interested and if we were, it must have been we could only guarantee him game time in the Papa Johns anyway.  Damn that lack of guaranteed game time.  We really must stop that as the opening gambit .  We'd like to sign you but we can't guarantee you'll play any games. That only worked once on Anya.

No.

£5m is rubbish remember Marriott they quoted lots of numbers it turned out it was £2.5m + lots of add ons.

clarke Harris I would take   £1.5-2m ideally  tops score the goals get us out the league. It has to be a 50/50 split with our signings long term sustainability and short term rewards for promotion.

I am just going to share this article from May of this year, in which Cheltenham’s local journalist said Charlton were front runners and I quote;

“But Gloucestershire Live understands League One Charlton are a particularly attractive proposition for the Kent-born front man, whose parents are based in close proximity to The Valley.”

https://www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/charlton-athletic-among-frontrunners-land-8433521

People will come to their own conclusions and no doubt some panic and sniping at the club and Warne will take place. However, it has always been a theme in the talk about May leaving Cheltenham that he wanted to be closer to family. His parents live near Charlton….

If football was as simple as signing a forward who scores a lot of goals, Peterborough would have won the league and Derby, Portsmouth and Cheltenham all would have been in the Playoffs last season.

May - doesn't do enough defensively, diabolical in the air, is a bad dribbler, lacks creativity
Clarke-Harris - Out of our budget, is a bad dribbler, is a bad passer, lacks creativity, is poor at Championship level.

We're much more likely to be after the likes of Walker and Smith on frees, or Washington and Nombe for relatively low fees.

Agree, but getting promoted automatically involves scoring more goals than we got last year. We’ve lost our only real goalscoring threat from last season and that means finding several new players who can score, because we are seriously short in our current squad.

That’s more money than we will spend in total. And especially for a 29 year old with limited ability to step up a division.

Bit of a logic fail here. It doesn’t, for several reasons… concede less or other teams score less being the primary two. Could win every game 1-0 and go up.

Not your original point, but it certainly doesn’t require one man to get 20+.

If the family he wishes to be closer to are specifically his parents then that makes sense, although I note he was born in Gravesend which is a little nearer to Gillingham - perhaps that explains something of the interest to join them (if true).

We scored 67 last season. Teams who have won automatic promotion with similar or less goals:

21/22 - Rotherham, 70
19/20 - Coventry, 48 in 34 games (equivalent to 65)
16/17 - Bolton, 68
15/16 - Burton, 57
13/14 - Brentford, 72
12/13 - Brentford, 62
07/08 - Forest, 64
06/07 - Bristol City, 63

Look back over the years and see who got automatic promotion with 67 goals.

I’m not saying we definitely need one star.

Just that many of the players we’re being linked with are gambles in that their scoring record is somewhat sporadic.

Let’s hope we get a forward line to get excited about.

Not necessarily - win 1-0 = 3 points lose 2-3 =0 points - clean sheets will win us promotion with our all round goal contributions

It’s always been part of the story that he wanted to be closer to family. Some speculated that meant his partner’s family who are from Doncaster way based on what’s been said, so Derby may have made more sense geographically if that was the case. But Gillingham and Charlton have always been names in the mix with strong interest being reported, which backs up the idea it’s a move closer to the south east that appeals to May.

I, personally, sense we will get some players who maybe aren't that prolific on paper but will have certain attributes than we can mould into what we want. This is the market we're shopping at now, not buying high on a player after a purple patch (Blackman et al).

For example, we need pace and athleticism up the top end of the pitch, there's no doubt about that. We may get exactly that, but I doubt on paper a lot of fans who are used to our previous 10 years of business will get excited about it. And let's face it, they'll probably write him (and Warne) off.
