Day
The Telegraph are running yet another story on Wayne Rooney's shirt number this morning with the headline "Wayne Rooney deserves opprobrium for his boneheaded association with the gambling industry" His crime? Having the shirt number 32 whilst playing in the Skybet Championship. I won't link you to the piece because I feel their website contains excessive irresponsible gambling adverts which are being used to fund the journalists salaries. They deserve opprobrium for their boneheaded association with the gambling industry, I counted not just one large banner on the main football section of their website but 5, yes FIVE adverts all for Coral with their articles. FindernRam
Papers don't do self awareness. I bet (geddit!) their own advertisers are pressuring them to slag off 32Red because they didn't the idea first.
RadioactiveWaste
Well, I mean moralising like that has put me into a right mess. Oh wait, no it hasn't. To be honest, I think that they think that Derby County "shouldn't have nice things like that" and as such, it's wrong that we do. they can all GTF if they think Rooney is somehow a uniquely bad manifestation of gambling advertising. Van der MoodHoover
There's never been any hint of evidence that Wayne Rooney has any particular affiliation to gambling has there? Not in a Joey barton type of way.....
maxjam
You only have to go on the EFL website; www.efl.com to see Sky Bet woven into their logos. Given that betting adverts are everywhere and endorsed by the EFL itself, it makes you wonder why they are singling out Derby/Wayne Rooney. Furthermore, imagine if the Telegraph headline had been aimed at Raheem Sterling and not Wayne Rooney - I seriously doubt the same language would have been used. BondJovi
22 minutes ago, tinman said: Aren’t those adverts based on the users browsing history? Not those. The whole thing stinks. One moment Rooney is an England legend, the next a disgrace. No wonder he went to the states to play. A lot of people would probably never have noticed the number Rooney wears and the link to our sponsor. Thanks to all the coverage, most now will. Probably worked better than they could have hoped. Does this mean we can't have a squad number 32? Betting has woven itself into the very fabric of football, it is everywhere. What is more obvious, the squad number, or the name Skybet championship? If that's the case... and I'm not disputing it... it still wouldn't be a problem in my eyes, considering his wealth, and ergo the percentage of such being lost by gambling. Without actually knowing his wealth, I suspect that £700k is the equivalent of me losing a few hundred to the bookies (which I don't by the way.*) It's about percentages for me, not actual amounts. I've always counted my losses as "paying for entertainment/enjoyment", the way some folk pay for a few beers every night of the week, 40 fags a day, or a trip to the opera once a month. I don't come home crying if I lose £200 on the roulette over a couple of hours or so. I'd rather not, of course, but at worst I get up the next morning and think "That was a bit of an expensive night! Still enjoyed it more than I would have done spending that at the opera though!" If they can afford it, it should not concern anyone else. *I should actually be talking in the past tense... it must be at least 4 years since I last went in a casino, and probably even longer for a bookies, and even then, it was only a handful of times a year. ...And I wouldn't know where to start, with on-line betting! Ellafella
I do like the word “opprobrium”. It’s not often used these days except by stuffy right-wing newspapers that not many people read.
Mafiabob
I’ll open up more about it on my next live vlog on the 18th August at 8pm..... believe me I’m not anti gambling industry at all..... far from it..... rather consensus and talk to them rather than shout down and be bitter about them..... some anti gambling campaigners really have been hypocritical, they’ve also reacted how I expected them to, and some of the stuff they do I’ve seen first hand..... just because some of us rather be moderate and build relationships with others around responsible gambling has been not very nice to say the least. If you have a moderate or opposing view.... they will go after you. Straight out of a certain political playbook Think however this will be the thing that will change the way advertising is done around gambling..... SaintRam
Just now, Eatonram said: First thing that appeared yet I have never been on any bookies website, so I doubt it. Gambling adverts show up for anyone with a sport heavy browsing history. Insidious. But as has been said, while they don't have control over specific adverts for each individual, the Telegraph do have control over what kind of adverts can show up on their site. John Doe
Agree with a lot of what has been said above. You've only got to watch some of the season previews/build-ups, and they are all intertwined with the "odds" of this or that happening over the course of the season. I also think though, that some of this coverage spans from that inherent "snobbery" within all mainstream media outlets, that the only league worth discussing nowadays is the Premier League, and the fact that "little old Derby from the Championship" have been able to pull off a deal like this, in the manner that they have done, has pushed a few noses out of joint! I would imagine if a team such as Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Watford had done this deal, in the same way as we have done, the narrative would be more about what a great deal they have managed to do, rather than what we are seeing in articles such as this. ilkleyram
On the Daily Mail website this morning there is a very good comment piece by Martin Samuel making exactly the same point as David's OP and calling out too other clubs including Boro.
