v Rotherham United (A) Match Thread

Bad loss today as it was three points we needed but never looked like getting. Bad foul by Lawrence probably cost us a point. he must stop doing that or be dropped until he has learnt his lesson. Subs brought on too late today. International break disrupted us. I cannot predict the results of matches in this league despite decades of practice. Top six is a realistic target on present evidence. COYR.

Just watched the highlights, yes Lawrence tackle was daft & needless but its not a red, their player made a meal of it and its their players reaction that turns it into a red. Also, never a penalty, ref is closer and linesman is calling it looking at it from behind the players. Their player runs across Forsyth and actuallt clips him making Forsyth go down first, if anything its a foul to us not a penalty.

Didnt show our penalty decision which sounds like on another day it would've been given but overall from listening to the game and the highlights the officials were beyond a joke.

Watched the penaltyy four times. I would not have seen it never mind given it.

I agree with all the above except the top 6 bit. If this is in the plan (because maybe it isn’t this season?) on the current performances it won’t happen. Yes it’s slightly more entertaining than Rowettball but we look no different to previous years by going on a lucky run of wins (with some games we should have lost) and then losing easily to a Rotherham or a Burton. Also a common theme over the last 4 seasons is opposition managers bigging us up on what quality players we have at our disposal, so psychically saying just turn up and you’ll beat us and we seemingly falling into this trap time and time. I know it’s early days, but today I felt was a marker on progress but we never looked like winning.

We will never ever ever ever ever ever ever get anywhere with a midfield pairing of Huddlestone & Johnson. They were ducking abysmal together last season and dominated by any team who played a pressing / energetic game against at us. The first half today was no surprise.

Matt H! Like it.

agree. Central midfield is still the void Rowett created. Huddlestone deep and static. Mount playing off the striker. And not a lot in between. We want to play a high tempo short passing game but johnno can't pass, and huddz can't do anything very quickly.

Hopefully we can sort it out.

Not a sending off.

Not a penalty.

Only seen it once but i have to agree.

the red was a yellow, and the pen was a joke.

Perhaps part of the problem is ed dawes bellowing his opinions as fact.

Also, we have some absolute cretins in our fan base. Some lad threw a chair from the top of the stand and it hit some poor lady on the back of the head. She had a huge gash and had to be escorted out by the stewards. That's not even to mention all the chants about peados coming from a sizable section of our support. Idiots.

I'm glad we're starting to recognise that its more than one or two tvvaats. We need to do summat about it.

Can't be doing with the fella- far too excitable, or the other one who give's out scores during the game and takes offence immediately at any text read out after the game like it's personally aimed at him.

I doubt the ref cares one iota what Ed thinks. We lost cos we weren’t as good as flippin Rotherham

Duh. No, somehow i doubt whether the ref was listening to radio derby. I was referring to how it colours peoples opinions of the game. Ed was bellowing for a red card for tom. It wasn't worth a straight red.

decisions cost us one point. Our own short comings prevented us getting anything more.

On to tuesday.

Better get used to it, Frank, we always get ship refs.

I got lambasted for criticising the ref for the Leeds match, (and being critical of the standards of refereeing in general at Derby games), and lo and behold its the same incompetent for this match and he performs in exactly the same manner. Well done to Keogh for not letting any of the players shake the match official's hands after the match - he should do this much more often.

I had to make do with the Radio Derby commentary which was pretty frightening. As well as all the other observations, I think Ramage should back out of it a bit, because he waffles on and on and on and on until Ed Dawes interrupts him with detailed commentary when the opposition have the ball, then the waffle starts again, giving the impression that Derby hardly ever touch the ball. It may have been that there were endless barrages of Rotherham attacks, I don't know, but it seems that their criticism of the match officials was spot on today.

As most have observed, much of our woes were caused by us starting so lethargically, and we never really got going until we were behind. Fair play to Frank by really going for it once we were down to 10 men, when we sounded the better team. So once again, why do we always leave it until the game has virtually gone before playing like we know we can? Is this the Derby way? In the end, we got what we deserved due to our poor performance until the game was gone. The ref did affect the score today, so perhaps we could have got a point, but the other two were thrown away by ourselves. And eventually, a succession of poor match officials will affect the result, although they haven't so far this season, so we only have ourselves to blame much of the time.

What matters is how we respond to this, so we really need to kick ass on Tuesday. Oh, and Frank, please have a look at beautiful George. He seems to be sharper and fitter, and doing well for the U-23's. Could he provide the cohesiveness and control that our midfield has been lacking so far? Perhaps some official news about him wouldn't go amiss. (Probably need another tin hat for mention Mr Thorne, but there you go!)

The Ref can’t be blamed for anything to do with the red card even without any reaction from the players Lawrence should have been sent off.

Agree completely, i was just pointing out that the ref didn't handle the situation very well. He couldn't control the game in my opinion.

I think these players forget that we are a big scalp for teams like Rotherham and even more so now with Frank in the dugout.

And if you don’t match them stride for stride where intensity and hunger is concerned, you’ll fall foul.

Motivation is a big issue for us, and has been for as long as I can remember. All too often we turn up thinking we have a divine right to beat teams like Rotherham and we come unstuck.

This result could be seen from a mile away - one because the international break was bound to disrupt any momentum we had and two we are often flimsy in the games that call for us to dig in and scrap for the win.

We have a soft centre and it was exposed long before the games against Millwall and Rotherham. Such games just show that not much has changed.

But I also think that sometimes having too much choice can make life more difficult. 7 games in and I don’t think Frank knows his best eleven and this is symptomatic of making nine signings and trying to change too much too soon. Is it any surprise then that we have struggled for fluency and consistency?

Yes, we have won 4 games but we’re still waiting for a good performance to make us all sit up and take notice.

Until Frank is clear in his thinking moving forward, we could be waiting for a while.

About the midfield being a persistent problem...

Well, it’s true that it has been an obvious problem since game 1.

But such things take time to remedy and effectiveness takes time to develop.

You have to build understanding and familiarity. And if you have only played 2-3 games together, it’s a lot to ask.

So if Frank thinks Huddlestone-Johnson-Mount could work, he can’t just discard it after two games. He has to show some conviction.

It is telling that if we were asked to pick our best eleven on the forum, there would be 100s of different line-ups. If Frank shares that uncertainty, this will creep into the minds of both players and fans.

We need some semblance of continuity.
