  1. Sounds dramatic and i wouldn't put money on us to achieve this how our bottle has filled up, but a nice 6 points over Easter would change the whole complexion.

I also think both matches are probably our easiest matches remaining so failing to take full advantage probably does put the nail in our coffin.

Ok, who was that striker that was on a free transfer, or loan, that was within our wage budget? Unless you have an answer your post is pretty much pointless.

I’m not a scout and not prepared to trawl through all prem and championship development squads to throw a few names out. But we managed to bring Osula, Dobbin and Roberts without paying a loan fee so there’s players out there.

In the position we were in, we would have had to take a chance on a player and likely one with next to no experience of senior football.

Maybe Warne felt the risk wasn’t worth it in our position or perhaps he thought given McGoldrick’s form at the time, we would cope without one.

I think it’s hard to be too critical.

Think we’ll have to agree to disagree, I wasn’t happy at the time re no striker and I’m not happy now.

As long as we don’t free fall Warne has my backing. But maybe he’s not quite the white knight that I had him down to be.

January is always a difficult time and it was especially in our situation.

We were riding a long unbeaten run and the team were performing at a high level.

Would we have liked a striker? A centre back? Natural full backs? Almost certainly. In ordinary times, you can bet we’d have signed 5-6 players in January in an attempt to go from strength to strength. But times are different now and we have to be more selective.

Was there good value out there? Was there something workable within our restrictions? Was there a risk of upsetting the balance of a small, high achieving squad? These were all considerations we had to make.

This is a season of learning lessons in that respect.

Think not bringing in a striker was unbelievably poor, I reckon there was someone out there to at least Osula’s quality. That said I’m not saying that would’ve saved the season.

But massively frustrating having to watch us toddle around the pitch with no threat. I feel like if this season is going to be salvaged then we need a Mason Bennett freakesque goal to give us a kiss of life. Although we don’t have a mason mount to come back in to the team but instead a Tony Springett.

There’s not a lot of option in January at the best of times, let alone when you’re being restricted to notransfer fees,  loan fees, agent fees and a strict wage budget.

I didn’t expect much to happen in January, but we were led to believe a couple of times that some signings were imminent and didn’t happen.

The squad is now showing the signs of the strain of PW’s style. However, with a larger pool of players as options in the summer and the new recruitment guy from Oxford on board, I am hopeful we can put together a squad that can meet the tough physical demands of the style of football we were witnessing up to January.

Agreed all eyes on the summer but if he starts poor I can’t see him getting much sympathy.

  6. Says he’s aware that the squad needs some surgery but didn’t have this view (in public) in January.

Our poor performance in the transfer market really has bummed us.

Yes I know we can’t pay fees but still our lack of movement was disappointing. Said it earlier in this thread, Warne doesn’t seem to have to a silver tongue regarding transfers.

He needs us to win a few before now and the summer or his job will be close to untenable. Providing he does this then he’ll need to get us playing in 4th and 5th gear regularly next season when at the moment we can’t get out of 2nd.

  7. 2 months ago this would’ve been a banked win. Get the cognac and cigars out boys and don’t break sweat.

I wouldn’t back us if my life depended on it at the moment.

Im all for giving Warne the summer but he needs to get us pulling our finger out in some capacity. If we don’t beat these then fan disgruntlement will start to show.

CB - Nathan Smith (Port Vale)

    RWB - Mitch Clark (Accrington)

LW - Conor McAleny (Salford), Armstrong Oko-Flex (West Ham)

CF - Will Keane (Wigan), Ryan Hardie (Plymouth), Niall Ennis (Plymouth)

Will Keane would be a very good signing, can’t help but think he may stay in the championship though.

  9. I’ll keep banging the drum but play offs are no go this season and I imagine our finish to the season will be mediocre at best.

Warne clearly needs the summer to get his players in. But then I think it’s fair to judge him on next season.

I’m a fair man though and I’m happy to share some of my concerns; He seems very tactically limited, has no pull in the transfer market and his teams have a pattern of running out of steam 2/3 in to a season. If Warne is going to progress as a respected championship manager he needs to address some of these issues.

One thing we can sleep tight on though is that even in league 1 we’re a big club and if the time comes that Warne is a gonner I’m sure we’ll have a respectable list of replacements wanting the job.

  10. I can see Knight and Bird leaving along with Bielik. Think we might be able to sweet talk Cashin and Sibley in to another year so if that’s the case this will be the squad for next season;

Wildsmith, McGee (believe he’s out of contract

    New RB, Rooney
    New LB,
    Cashin, Forsyth, 2 new CB

    Hourihane, Smith, 2 new CM

    NML, new RW
    Barkhuizen, new LW

    Sibley, new CAM

    Mcgoldrick, Collins, new FW

Thats 10 signings. Will be interesting whether we recruit for 3-5-2 or 4 at the back. Although if we go for 3-5-2 that could hamper NML and Barkhuizen’s effectiveness. Big summer ahead.

  11. Posted this message in the Oxford match thread and then a minute later Sibley scored and made me look daft. But I do think our race is ran for this season.

None of our players apart from McGoldrick are in any sort of form. NML and Barkhuizen look knackered. Cashin is in poor form, Wildsmith isn’t looking the super keeper he did at the start of the season.

Think the recruitment team have a big job on their hands. With all the loanees returning I’d say we need at least 8 new signings and if you add in departures such as Knight, Bird etc we could be looking at 10.

Providing we bring players in Warne will have a pre season to mould his team and more importantly players that suit his style.

If you’d have offered me 7th or 8th at the start of the season I’d have reluctantly accepted it. However, if we do fall out the play offs it’ll be down to our form being damn rotten. So we could be going in to the summer on a bit of a downer.

Think Warne needs to be judged on next season and I’d expect play offs at a minimum even with Knight etc leaving.

Just a shame how this season is tailing off and yes it’s been a wake up call in terms of teams treating us with contempt because we bring more than 10 fans to a match and actually have a bit of history.

Feeling a bit meh about it all today.

    It's been asked.

I'm still stunned by the Knight and Sibley comment.

Knight’s not even a 10 anyway. Will get away with him there a little bit at this level but concerning that PW thinks he has the attributes to play that role.

  13. Just now, RoyMac5 said:

What did he have to feed off in the first half?

Didn’t watch the match so can’t comment but it seems to be a pattern with him that he can’t have 3/4 matches in a row where he dominates.

Not saying today was on him and maybe he was harshly subbed. But Warne is the 3rd manager now to have him. So if he doesn’t trust him to play there week in week out maybe there is an issue.

Like I say if we were a mid table side then by all means play him blind faith and see what happens. But Warne hasn’t got that luxury. I’d try him again on sat but we need results by hook or by crook so he won’t get many cracks of the whip.

  14. He needs a move away to a team ironically like fleetwood who’ll play him blind faith and put up with his stinkers because he scores goals. Hopefully with plenty of matches he’ll find consistency and get a move back up the ladder.

Unfortunately he’s either been in a relegation battle or now a promotion hunt and his stinkers which really are poor can’t be tolerated.

Our squad is missing a real Taraabt style talent that can single handedly win us matches. Sibley could be this man but I’m afraid the treatment of him by Cocu (towards the end) and Rooney had pushed him back 2 years.

I’d try him again on Saturday behind didzy but if he fluffs his lines again it’s hard to defend him.

  15. The biggest worry for me and I say this as a Warne fan is that tactically he looks limited. If you take how we’re heading along with Rotherham’s complete drop off last season and it would appear his tactics are; get them fit, play basic football and ride the crest of the wave.

Concerning for next season if we’re gonna run out of steam towards the back end.

I know every manager has their pros and cons but it doesn’t look like we have another way to skin the cat.

At the moment, even though we had a flash in the pan at Oxford last week and mcgoldrick/sibs has scored a few, I don't see any of our players in the great form they have been earlier in the season. We know form increases and dips for individuals throughout a season, but at the moment it feels like the large majority of our team are having a bit of a dip at the same time. So frustrating and it's really not what you need at this stage of the season.

All we can hope is we manage to get some consistency back to our play, because we really shouldn't be this lacklustre against teams like Fleetwood at home, not when we're hoping of being competitive in the playoffs (if we get there)

I would snatch someone's hand off to find a replacement for Collins. I know we love a scapegoat but I really struggle to see what he offers other than running at defenders.

    ?

Agreed. Fatigue has definitely played its part, but pure complacency has killed us today.

Lucky to get a result last week and posh away next week looks ominous. Think our goose might be cooked for this season. I bet Warne is secretly shocked at how badly our levels have dropped off.
