I do disagree, while he didn’t have a poor season - he was no more than adequate. McGoldrick looked head and shoulders above him, a 36 year old who has decided to move to League Two. Players in the same division in worst teams were able to outperform him. The only teams interested are bottom half championship sides or recently promoted League One sides.
Understand football is very subjective at times, but if you consider if the shoe was on the other foot and we had spent £2.5m on a transfer fee and up to £1m per annum in wages and his performances last season was the result. I don’t think many people would’ve been happy. He wasn’t in the running for our POTY award. He didn’t give himself a sniff again the competition was a player released by Sheff Utd aged 36. A goalkeeper released by Sheff Wed. A centre back in his first full year in professional football and a left back on the back of three ACL injuries playing at centre back consistently for the first time in his career. It wasn’t exactly the treble winning United side, let’s say.
I appreciate his ability, his upside and what he brings to the team. Equally, I understand that if he’s here next season that he still isn’t a match winner or a creative influence that we so desperately need and could flip him in order to get.

We could play like prime Pulis Stoke if it got us out of this cesspit of a league. Let’s win football matches, then worry about how it looks.

We were rubbish at scoring from corners and crosses from free kicks last season - Cashin and Forsyth the main culprits - I expect that to change drastically next season, needs must and all that - Hourihane delivery was fine and Sibley when allowed was also excellent so that wasn’t the problem.

I think we need players who are good in the air to take advantage of Hourihane balls in from set peices.

We’re not giving up our best players, his contract is expiring and we are in negotiations with him. If he chooses to go elsewhere that’s up to him, the club will offer the terms it feels appropriate to offer and if he moves on so be it. None of us are privy to the discussions between player and club, nor do we know his motivations. If and when David McGoldrick makes a decision on his future I’m sure we’ll get a bit more of a picture, the rest is just speculation and boredom. If he goes and we haven’t replaced him by the time the season starts then maybe I’ll worry, until then I’ll be patient and wait to see what unfolds.
As to your other point, what worrying signs are there to have come from a summer in which the transfer window is yet to open and we’ve been linked with a bunch of players? We’ve also been told the club can spend fees again. I really don’t get how pessimistic some people can be when in reality nothing has happened yet. Other than our position in the football leagues the club is allegedly the healthiest it has been in a long time, there’s some good people in charge making sensible decisions with a clear idea of keeping the club sustainable in the long term, try looking at the positives as well as the prospect of losing a 35 year old striker for reasons you can’t control.

My Mum's fella is a Vale fan and I go to games with him when I can and I can assure you that spell against us (which I agree he looked busy and dangerous) was very much a one-off. Nowhere near good enough from what I have seen of him and heard from other Vale fans and actually struggled to get in their team for the majority of the season. Busy and willing but no real goal threat or quality.

Bit saddened by the dismissal of Bird's impact on here...its clear some folk just don't realise what a good player he is. Like Will Hughes, he's a tempo player & controls the pace of the game but his defensive nous is also very good & clearly under-rated. No, he isn't particularly strong in the tackle but its 2023, not 1985...players are not rewarded for smashing into opponents these days but are rewarded for staying on their feet, tracking oppo midfield runs & intercepting dangerous passes/counter attacks. Max does all these very well & to the OP question, is the one player I absolutely would not want to leave.
As a contrasting midfielder, I could live with Jason Knight going especially as he's coming up to end of his contract & has international ambitions to protect. To be blunt, I haven't been impressed with his output in midfield this year & don't believe he has the quality to play centrall midfield long term. I do think he would make a good right wing-back (his best football this year was right side) & suspect that's where he will be played by whoever buys him. An offer of 2m plus would be a must sell.
Bielik is unlikely to return also given his international ambitions & at a reputed 20k a week (1m plus a year), just needs a quick move away.
Sibley is a difficult one. Like Knight, I wasnt that impressed with his output this season but feel there is a player in there given time. With a more incisive front line in 23/24, he could make hay playing off the main striker(s). Hence I would only sell for silly money.

Spot on. I happened to have interviewed Warne a few times when I worked in the Apprenticeship sector, when he was still Rotherham manager and he was doing various higher level courses on Leadership & Management and Psychology etc. He is big in to his psychology, motivation and leadership techniques and is a very intelligent man and I am 100% confident that everything he says to his players and to the media etc. is said for a reason and because he understands his players as people and knows how to make them tick. I know most managers should have this skillset but I know for a fact that he is particularly interested in it and it is a major strength of his. I don't think anything is said carelessly or by chance.

Good defender but as with Knight, I think our fanbase hugely overrates him. I think he will be a mid-top end Championship defender and have a very decent career but that is his ceiling for me.
Pros - comfortable on the ball & great passing range, good character, tackling and last-ditch defending (although this is often caused by his cons!) and decent enough in the air.
Cons - positioning, pace, mobility, height, concentration and decision making
To answer the initial question, I think he is a decent defender, slightly out of form, as per the majority of the team but when/if we get over the blip, he will be a key player in the run-in at this level.

Collo_DCFC11 reacted to DerbyRevolution in Tactics. Warne vs Rosenior
Rosenior didn't really play out from the back. We played it across the back a few times, looked panicked then went long and often straight out of play, the worst of that being at Lincoln
I think now Rosenior has gone people are remembering his football more fondly than they should. It was ok for Oxford, Charlton and the first 45 v Barnsley, after that it started to decline and never recovered. The only exception to that that I can think of was West Brom at home in the cup, that was a good performance.
From what I can tell so far Warne wants us to try and get it into the wide CB then down the flanks quickly to the wing backs or up into the striker.
Ultimately, both weren't or haven't been good enough. Only Warne has chance to change that now
I will add, the officials have been nothing short of shocking and haven't helped either of them

We’re at home so I would expect us to revert to playing out from the back. The fact Rooney himself said he didn’t like watching the game yesterday and said it’s ugly football Derby fans won’t like watching would also suggest it’s an occasional plan B.
Performance first half v Forest and taking our chances I think we can win this one. If we go for a win and get a draw that would also be an ok result.

My team would be as follows:
                                Roos
    Byrne         Jagielka      Davies    Buchanan
                       Knight        Bird
             Sibley       Morrison      Jozwiak
                              Lawrence
Same as Forest but Buchanan and Knight in for Foz and Shinnie. Bird is good defensively and is better at getting us playing from deep with his passing breaking the lines, Knight gives us energy, can break up play but also can support the front 4. Definitely need to tweak the full backs tactics at times for this one, can’t have both Byrne and Buchanan pushing right up unless we’re well on top.

Great win. Jags and Davies look very strong at the back, Bird and Joz looked completely different players and back to their best, and thought Buchanan was an improvement on Forsyth on the left.
Morrison runs the show and is a classy act. Just hope he keeps it up. Sibley struggled physically today but his driving runs are a huge threat. Him, Joz and Morrison are as good as you'll get on the ball in this division in my view. Cracking interchange between them.
The ball slows down alot with Shinnie which is a weakness in this system. Think we'll see further improvement when Bielik returns. Him and Bird in the middle may not balance though so that'll be interesting to see.
Baldock did ok and got a goal. Works in this system as he doesn't need to create or holdup much. Just run behind and be in the right spot.
Roos also strong tonight. His drop on Huddlestones head was lucky to be called a freekick but he was solid and good with his feet again.
Gaining confidence that Rooney knows what he is doing. This team is going to grow in stature this season. Think we'll have a positive one.

Great performance. Special call out for Jozwiak and Sibley who has something to prove and did it in style. Sibley’s control of himself was notable. Jozwiak had some lovely skill.
Plus Bird, another who has been criticised, so in control.
    Very happy this evening.

Makes so much difference having a willing runner playing on the shoulder (Baldock/Stretton). We are limited in style when CKR plays whereas there is now an obvious out ball for the midfielders and it allows us to be more threatening and expansive, also creating more space for the attacking midfielders
