Piss take as per with this lot. How have they been allowed to bring in anyone without assurances on their current debts being cleared. Where is their point deduction for breaking their embargo with EFL facilitation. Far more questions to be answered than when we we were stopped  extending  Marriotts contract and we were only allowed to give youngsters 1 yr deals costing bloody millions.

I wonder if the recent signings have had there registrations approved by the EFL yet ? Might be interesting if not

Now that clubs are taking shape in League One, we can probably get a look at who is likely to be among the runners and riders.

In terms of candidates for the top 2 -

Bolton - I expected Bolton to be our main challenger this season, but don't think they've done a great deal in the transfer market. Lost Bradley and Trafford who are both excellent young players. Still, watched them against Everton and they looked good and I think they will still provide a threat. I also expect them to do well in the loan market once that really starts to gear up. If I'm a Bolton fan I'd be confident of a top 6 finish - and a run at the top 2.

Reading - awaiting a potential points deduction, I believe? So maybe not. Regardless, they've started adding quality to the squad and want to add up to 10 more. Lewis Wing is a very good signing - Knibbs, Smith and Savage all on the young side but have potential. They've had a shocking pre-season, though, so if you read anything into that it could be a slow start for them. If there is no points deduction, I would anticipate a top 6 finish. One to watch for the top 2 perhaps?

Barnsley - like Bolton, I expected them to be there or thereabouts. They already some decent players in their side, but pre-season hasn't been great for them. Duffy was an excellent manager and I don't know if the replacement is going to be able to replicate his success. Mads Anderson is a very good player who has left. They will still have aspirations for the top 2, I'm sure, but a weaker side than the one who finished last season.

Blackpool - lost a few players, sold a couple more. They've brought in Joseph, Norburn, Pennington and Morgan that should keep them competitive. Top 6 will be the aim and if a couple of these younger lads do the business then perhaps even top 2.

    Top 6 -

Wigan - like Blackpool, lost a few players but have now started to add to their squad. They're going younger with the players they're bringing in, will start on -8(?), so although may not trouble the play-offs. I don't think they're going to be an easy game for anyone this season.

Portsmouth - A lot has been made of their signings, but I don't particularly see a lot of quality within them personally. Reegan Poole is a solid defender, the likes of Whyte and Scully could provide a threat at this level. They've had one semi-serious friendly against AFC Wimbeldon and lost. Difficult one to read, inexperienced manager to boot. I would say top 6 hopefuls, but far from a favourite.

Peterborough - Lost a couple of their better players, although still have JCH at this venture. They will no doubt threaten the top 6 as they always do, one of the better teams at finding diamonds in the rough. A team with a lot of speed and athleticism. I still anticipate plenty of movement both in and out from them so will be difficult to call.

Charlton - they've signed a couple of good players, Isted and May look solid, also said to be very active in the market still. They were far from brilliant last season, but do have some quality in their squad: Dobson, Hector, Leaburn. Rak-Sakyi will be a big miss. I do fancy them to go well this season if they add a few more. Leaburn and May upfront is an exciting front two - especially if Leaburn can stay fit.

Oxford & Bristol Rovers will have some optimism this season too.

Objectively, if you look at Derby in comparison - lost our top goalscorer and one of their better players in Knight. Although. we have increased the depth of the team and loaded up on defensive additions. A question on our attacking quality (yet to be addressed) but realistically a very experienced side, under an experienced manager who look better built for the rigors of the season.

I'd go for a top 4 of: Blackpool, Derby, Bolton and Reading (barring any point deduction). Charlton, Barnsley and Portsmouth to fight it out for the final two spots in the play-offs. I could see Barnsley missing out in all honesty.

Reading under an embargo again so may not be able to get those 10 players in now

£250k is not our total budget spend.  The point Warne was making was that if he is to pay a fee in that region when you add the wages, etc on top it eats into a bigger proportion of his budget than a free transfer.  By signing a free transfer he can make 2 or 3 signings for the same money.  £250k is part of his total budget.  He has to decide how manage it to get best value.

Plus if you blow a big lump of budget on one player who then goes and does his ACL or similar then you really do have a problem.

From what I remember if we had signed Lubos Kubik and Ivo Knofilchek they would have been the first foreign players to play in the old First Division.

For Derby Tewfik Abdullah from Egypt 1920.
Oldest for any club Walter Bowman 1892 from Canada for Accy Stanley  then Max Seeburg Spurs 1908  from Germany 😉

I'm organising Belper Tapas Trail on 8th and 9th of September. All (or most) of the Real Ale Pubs in Belper Town Centre are doing snacks and small dishes between £1 and £3, to have with your pint.

We have Indian, Greek and Spanish themes so far as well as traditional English food.

Not surprised , last time I went in the Ay Up was undrinkable and the good lady’s cocktail wasn’t up to much. Never seemed to be enough folk in to be sustainable whenever I walked past.
Not really my sort of place as not a fan of craft beers

i am not sure what YOU find so hard to understand? The £40 is SUPPOSED to be set aside for the tax man when the bill is due to be paid.

If you spend that money you cant pay the tax man, we couldnt pay the tax man, and kept using the money set aside to run the club - thus increasing the tax bill to an unsustainable amount that we could not pay.

so out of the 72 clubs, 2 didnt accept it, one of them was us with the most unsustainable tax bill of the lot. hmmmm, yes....

no idea why you continue to defend what he did, must be stockholm syndrome or your his grand son

Mel didn’t reject the Covid money , we along with others under restrictions were not allowed to apply for it.
For all Mel’s sins this was not one of them and caused us major problems.

The Beeb are so desperate with sports though, completely priced out of the market and with no option but to over promote minority sports. Women's football is, largely, still that and so they over index it beyond belief at every turn (yes, someone is going to tell me that thirteen times in history more than 60,000 people have watched a women's football match and excellent, all power to the elbow). But compared to many sports women's football is still not tier one. If it was Sky or BT would buy coverage.

And so it was somewhere bordering on obvious that they moved the news to BBC2 so we could have coverage of New Zealand playing Norway on BBC1. If had been the final, with England in it, then maybe but for a game between two teams - one of which hadn't won any of their previous 15 World Cup matches - was a bit much.

Not because it raises my ire at people watching women's football - I'm not the knuckle dragging troglodyte some may think in that respect. But because this is license payers content and they are honour bound to present content that best represents the needs of the majority. I can't stand Eastenders but I do recognise that for many it is the best thing on the box.

I’d rather the BBC put this on or other home grown sport than give it to American Sports ( NFL) which should be on commercial channels

Good spot that, 10 goals in 30 something games for a 20 year old is impressive. Looking online he's been injured in preseason and that's prevented them deciding whether to loan him out or not. They may prefer a champ loan for him of course.

These suggestions do offer optimism that loans can work out very well at this level, even though often  you are having to take a punt on a raw talent with so little experience.

Not sure Boro would want him playing for a competitor in the same division ?

I think we’re going to see Bird with more licence this season, it’s going to be a huge season for him.

Thompson has done wonderfully this pre-season to earn trust from the management team and I think he will be a good part of the squad this year.

Still time for one the potential 3 new signings to come into all this yet.

Bit confused with Sibley because Warne said next week in his interview but we’ve been told longer?

Apparently felt a bit of tightness in training so he has been put back a couple of weeks in recovery

Hmm. Not sure what to say. I wasn’t amazed. It was just good football highlights. Why was it brilliant?

The players are actually female French players but with the heads of the male players super imposed on them.

He’s certainly the greatest left back we’ve had in my time watching - partly because he’s pretty much the only LB we’ve had! Remarkable longevity really, I was watching Craig Forsyth play when I was 13!

No-one else really come close. Most the other left backs we’ve had (Malone, Olsson etc) have all been largely s****.

Olsson worth a mention for the winner v the treetards
