I have no doubt if Thommo was a starter in our midfield next season that he would  not let us down , very underrated by some on here , his game is a lot more than just running around

He’s been round the ground, and was one of the three players Warne spoke to. He wants to be local and be close to family. It’s a strong possibility

The transition from Steve McClaren to Gary Rowett is one of the most devastating pieces of mismanagement many of us will ever see at the club. We were under no restrictions, had more money than ever and were already one of the best sides in the division - still managed to monumentally f*** it.
McClaren’s sacking the first time around is where it all went wrong. We haven’t had a set of players and manager that suited each other so well since. We had a clear identity and willingly threw it away.
The link to the Newcastle was completely overblown by a section of media/fans around the club that are insistent on shooting themselves in the foot.
If it wasn’t for an injury crisis we’d have gone up that season automatically and no one would have been bothered about Newcastle.
McClaren’s poor media skills turned him into a pantomime villain - he said he wouldn’t go at one point but kept getting asked. He’s also said that, before he was sacked, he’d decided to stay.
His resultant sacking was the beginning of the end, from then on we spent years and millions of pounds chasing what we already had with him and Simmo.
You only have to look at who Mel hired in the following two seasons to see that he had absolutely no clue what direction to go in once we’d lost that identity. There was no theme to Clement to Pearson, back to McClaren and eventually Rowett.
It turned us into an unrecognisable blob of several managers ideas that, outside of Lampard’s loans, have never looked like we could go up to the Premier League and stick since.
When we ended up with Rowett we had a manager who was the polar opposite of McClaren (defensive and media savvy). That side was then dismantled after wasting two years where McClaren could have got them up.
Not saying McClaren was perfect but sticking with him was our best bet.

Clement was sacked too early too. And Pearson should never have been appointed in the first place

Absurd decision to sack him both times. With Morris’ initial investment he’d have taken us up 15/16 easily

Steve McLaren deserves more respect for how good of a job he did in 2013/14. He quickly turned a promising but inconsistent team into an absolute force. Denied promotion by a freak of a game.

It has - but only because it’s given an insight into how great the group of players are. Celebrating with the fans from the final whistle all the way through pubs in town. Genuinely nice blokes happy for themselves, the club and the city.

Compare with other stuff I saw this week with Leicester players celebrating going up by gathering in the safety of one of their mansions and having a few drinks around the kitchen island. Soulless and removed from the fans.

Really shows what Warne has built and hopefully he can keep the spirit even through squad changes over summer.

Crazy assists record, good age, surely wouldn't cost us millions, already local..

we'd be mad to let Sibs go imo, can't just let players like him go. He may not be a starter but imo he done very well playing in a position he's not used to. I wouldn't have thought he'd be on massive money anyway and he's proven he can score in the championship.

Oddly thought Ward looked his best slotting into the ‘10’ role last night, he seemed to interchange with NML on that right hand side and both goals came from him floating in the middle.

Might be the three attackers behind the striker swap and change in the game depending on what the opposition defends with.

I wonder if one of these days we might try and actually out football one of these crap outfits who turn up to play like this, or whether we will continue to willingly play them at exactly the game they want us to.
When you play win at all costs football and don’t win then you should absolutely expect criticism.

Really agree with this. Was noticeable today that the crowd was really giving it a good go at getting behind the team, especially in the build up to Bird’s goal.

This carried on for a few minutes after the goal and then we reverted to type, poor and misplaced long passes, no fluidity in possession and head tennis, and it sucks all the life out of the ground.

The result today was frustrating and yet we’re somehow in with a chance of promotion, but this season for me has been really flat to watch. I won’t care if we’re promoted come May, but I’ve lost a bit of enthusiasm this season and I don’t think I’ll be the only one.

That game was Warne all over - poor disjointed first half and go ahead in the second with one moment of quality.
Sit back and try to hold on then acted shocked that we don’t.
Why don’t we ever push on and try to score more rather than sitting back ?! Why not take advantage of the twelfth man ? Look how much the crowd get behind you when we do attack ? Why can’t Warne see this ?
People will scoff but his tactics are woeful.

If there is one thing you can bank on, regardless of who is managing us, it's that we will under no circumstances make the most of an opportunity to make life easier for ourselves.

JustOneBiblicalKazim reacted to Ghost of Clough in Has DC lost faith in the recruitment process?
The process used for this season will need to be overhaulled. 12 summer signings and a further 2 in January, of which only 3 are likely to be regular starters is absolutely shocking (Nelson, Nyambe, Blackett-Taylor). This is also after the squad failed to place top last season, losing 3 of our first 11 (Roberts, Knight and McGoldrick) and not even having a right back in the entire squad.
It's summarised by having no long term vision. That's in terms of: a) bringing in younger players who will either maintain their current standards for longer, or have room for improvement; or b) planning how the players will fit into the team.
Warne put a clear focus on older and more experience players, based on the rationale of higher wages equates to better players. If more budget is put towards the wages, we'll end up with a stronger squad of players.
Warne also had no plan on how to fit the players into the team. This is demonstrated by early summer recruitment being with 3421 in mind, which quickly changed to 352, and then alternating between 442 and 4231 during the season so far. We signed a LB (Elder) to play as a wing back, but also signed Nyambe (RB) after already signing 2 wing backs. He also signed a slow CB who cannot play in a high line and is uncomfortable on the ball under pressure. We've basically got through from October with only 1 fully fit forward whowas 2nd choice last season and failed to improve on in the summer AND January.
The style of play our CF targets prefer also varied. Summer targets like Harris, Rhodes and Sharp all have different strengths and weaknesses. Similar with January targets such as Smith, Gregory, Mubama, Ennis. It's just a scattergun approach all round. Most of these targets compromise on the high intensity press Warne wants to implement too.

Problem is with our current manager it doesn’t matter how good the academy players are he will not use them to improve. The efl trophy was a great time to get them some competitive football yet we still constantly use the older generation. Like with previous recruitment I have no idea what the actual plan is

The real issue is the summer signings were generally poor. If we’d signed the right strikers in the summer (young, injury free) we wouldn’t be desperate for a striker now. I don’t believe there was not any up and coming and affordable strikers in the lower divisions for us to have gone for. The Rams scouting system has been a problem for years.

It's not Brown's technical or physcial abilities which are stopping him from being L1 ready. The groundwork should have been laid for him months ago, which could have been the difference between him being ready to step up to start the odd game for us in the league now.
Waghorn and Washington have both been out since October and there was a 4 week gap between John-Jules making his first appearance since September. We sort of did... he got 45 minutes playing with Collins in the Wolves U21 game when he would have been better paired with a creative player - even Weston, Allen or Wheeldon would have been a better choice (instead of Collins) to see what he was actually capable of. He then got 15 minutes as a late sub (again paired with Collins) against Northampton and only 1 minute since - he didn't even get a run out in the other EFL Trophy games since then. That was the 3-0 win over Fleetwood and the dysmal dispaly against Bradford.
If he was given more game time to ease him into life as a Derby first team player, we would have been able to make a fairer judgement on if he's capable of playing a few games for us this month or not. It's not as if John-Jules has done much of note since his last goal (he played in 10 games since)

Fair play if you want to stay positive but it’s a disgrace not to land a striker at all. There was me thinking Gregory was poor.

At some point we’re going to have to come to the realisation that with so many players out of contract at the end of the season, and with Warne turning Derby into a short-term stop gap for footballers, we’re going to have a complete rebuild to build a culture within the dressing room.
How on earth can you have faith in Warne/Thomas/Pearce.. to oversee that based on their body of work up to now?
