If I were building a team I'd want a striker who stays fit and plays nearly every game .. who can keep defenders busy, hold up the ball, link play/be an outlet and has a decent conversion rate - Collins. (In the past I suppose Howard, Gabbiadini, Martin, Wanchope all performed that role in different ways.)
Then I'd be wanting a link-up player/ number 10 who could also fill-in as lead striker, chip in with goals but is more of a creator - McGoldrick 
Then I'm wanting options. Something different...be it rapid pace, or silky skills, poacher, brilliant in the air. Doesn't have to be a great all-rounder, just be a great last 20min player who can change the game. Stretton didn't look like any of them...he looked more like an all-rounder who wasn't quite good enough to be the main man yet. Better for him to go where he will get games, really run the show and come back a better player. Just never struck me as a player I would turn to to change a game. If Collins gets a long term injury we may have an issue.  But I think Dobbin sounds more like the loan players I'd be thinking of - confident, destined for bigger things and capable of something special in a tight situation.

As we’re apparently getting compensation for his registration (if I’ve read that correctly) then what advantage did he gain by having a strop?  Is it just the case that we wouldn’t get as much as he’s no longer technically under contract?
I’m sure nobody would have begrudged him leaving as he’s obviously better than League 1 (indeed, I’d have no issue with anyone wanting to leave really, albeit I’d want to keep as many of our contracted players as possible like Byrne, Bird, Knight and Sibley).  I’m sure somebody would have come in for him and there would have been no need for any silliness and resulting rancour. I doubt he’s really bothered, but it just casts an unnecessary shadow on his time here, which is a shame because he was a good player for us.

Perhaps we should follow the lead and Derby should issue a unilateral declaration of independence, the flag has already been sorted. ?

£200 quid a week, top quality training, a chance which very few get, exposure of a good level of football and basically, a massively lucrative career. Yeah, short changed him didn't we...
The academy system is massively flawed because we're getting nothing like the return on investment for it to make sense. For every Delap, there's 30 x players we've never heard of that have gone through the system and not worked out that cost us $$$. It's not about the investment in the individual player, it's about getting a fair return on the infrastructure that produces these players and £400k / E300k or whatever, is laughable. If they want the player, they should be paying £1m+ or leave him with us as clearly he'd have played for us. 
If I was Mr Clowes, I'd be looking at all these young academy players going for 'nowt (Delap, Plange, Ebosele, Ebiowei, Kaide Gordon, etc there's almost certainly more) and be thinking if it's worth it. You hear about Boro players going for £20m (propping up there accounts) and we're just missing out - massively. Delap and Gordon have gone to top, top clubs for £1m each (or less) and if they'd have stayed with us and had a couple of seasons, perhaps they'd have been £20m+ players and our financial future then looks VERY different.

Exactly, we'll be able to use their own payment for Plange as evidence when pitching our case to the tribunal. The interest from the likes of Man Utd and others will also show that Ebiowei is a MORE sought after player than Plange was.

Really! remember they gave £1 million pounds for not proven Plange to help keep our club going, the club will get more than £30,000 from the tribunal.

Logical move loaning him out even though it's Birmingham. He was going to miss 2-3 months with the World Cup anyway and the first few weeks of the season. Add to this his appalling injury record since he joined us. No point in paying a player 20k in wages a week in the league 1 in those circumstances.
Hopefully getting a substantial amount of savings on his wages allows us to get the 4-5 players of sufficient quality we need to bolster the squad.

I’ve not watched a great deal of Korey Smith either - but based on what I’ve seen in pre-season, yes he is a possession based player that controls the play, but again he’s better utilised slightly further up the pitch as a creative force, where he can keep hold of the ball in tight areas and unlock space with intricate one twos. Think a Will Hughes type. Again, he can’t really replicate what Bird offers defensively, we need someone who can. 
Don’t get me wrong, we have definitely made a huge amount of progress from where we were at the start of the window. We’ve now got enough players to field a match day squad, which, give we had to put one together in such a short space of time, is a credit to everyone involved. We can’t stop here though, the rebuild isn’t done. By my maths, we have a first team squad of 20 players. That’s still way too thin in my view, probably 5 players short. A GK, RB, CDM and 2 wingers. Depth is so important in this gruelling league. 

Should be paying the lot or we should have waited now he's fit. Either that, or he should be forgoing his extra as he want's the move .

Signing recently released youngsters with an excellent attitude and a point to prove is infinitely better - not to mention more exciting - than the approach which got us into financial strife and ultimately out of the Championship in the wrong direction. 

Yeah I agree and when he's poor he's really poor.
It's never just a case of he made a mistake there. He'll make a mistake and then continue to for the rest of the game.
I don't understand why some of our fans are getting excited about him signing a new deal at all.

After everything that everybody at DCFC have collectively endured over the last year or two this really stinks. In recent years in particular I haven't had a particularly high opinion of many footballers but then folks like Curtis and Colin Kazim Richards completely restore your faith only for it to be 'Byrned' or 'Buchananed'. If this is true then it's just a cynical way of trying to denying the club any cash while slightly improving their own negotiating position. It's just despicable behaviour and I have nothing but utter contempt for them.

CKR is What being a real sportsman means to me. It’s not about win or lose, but how you played the game. Take a bow Colin. A ram to remember and a man to respect 

Did better than many expected, his attitude was nothibg like he was portrayed. Playrd a big part in the connection between club & fans, i personally really enjoyed what be brought to our club.
