i understand this completely, i dont want to see us splash the cash or do something ridiclous.

but my response would be a happy alternative is to invest in assets that can grow & dont put bigger wages into players ageing that wont improve or lack motivation. we look back to last season with mcgoldrick & hourihane, a few others also that will be on big wages for this level and a year or two down the line you have nothing to show for it meanwhile a younger player with an upward curve will protect the club better than those players. waghorn falls into the same category as the above two, yeah he might be good but it gets us nowhere long term.

Very disappointing today. We were playing 3 centre half’s but it looked like we were playing one!
Ward’s delivery was excellent overall whilst Forsyth was our most dangerous player and could easily have had a hat trick !
Which says a lot - I thought Nelson was poor and his distribution was slow and inaccurate, Bradley was largely ineffective and obviously cost us a goal against whilst Cashin was backpedaling against their centre forward from goal kicks in a one on one situation frequently which was just Bizarre.
Our midfield was massively missing Jason Knight winning the football and obviously we missed McGoldrick winning headers and controlling a football - I am not going to blame Collins for being Collins but we lack pace all over the pitch.
seriously lots of room to improve but we looked easy to play against.
pet hate, could we please have someone showing for ball from throw ins.
Wigan tried to play football so credit to them.

This for me is our biggest problem.
We are going to be so far up the pitch in a lot of games at Pride Park that we're always going to be vulnerable to quick counter-attacks on the break. There's a lot of space there being marshalled  by a fairly slow back line.
I was trying to think why we looked so much better in the PP friendlies going forward and it was because we were the ones exploiting the space in behind. Bird looked so much better in those games when he had space to play those killer through-balls. Today he was cramped up too close to our strikers.
Maybe we'll do better away from home when the opposition will attack more?

Mad keen football person. They loved it.
We have to enjoy it wherever possible.
    It’s footy.
    It’s fun.
Be passionate/angry/frustrated/delighted/ecstatic whatever. But enjoy it. Enjoy being part of something that is bigger than us as individuals.
    Its Derby County.

Last year we were lacking pace and power all over the pitch. This year we are lacking pace and power all over the pitch. The manager and recruitment team haven’t really done their job have they? Hopefully they do in the next few weeks.

Not a great start but possibly the kick up the backside everyone needs.
Worrying thing for me is our main targets are all the wrong  side of 30 and we need younger legs in this team.

Especially with the game Warne insists on playing. You can't play that type of football with a squad of 19 who have the oldest average age in the division.

yes the fitness and speed at which we play is a real real concern.

i have said it for ages to get out this league you need athletic young players not old slow players it just doesnt work. its going to be a slog of a season thats for sure hopefully it will get better but it is a real concern for me we looked so under prepared compared to wigan

It's one game, and it's important not to overreact, but that was fu**ing abject at every level. We were one-dimensional, slow, unfit, and worst of all we didn't even execute our own plan well. We gifted Wigan two goals, but every time they broke through the midfield screen, they looked dangerous and could have scored 3 or more today. Nelson looked uncomfortable on the ball, he isn't a WCB in a million years, constantly passing back, making us lose the initiative, and Bradley doesn't have the legs to cover the ground needed in the role he played today. That's what led to the mistake for the first goal, a negative pass which put pressure on Bradley which then led to a Wyke rounding Wildsmith.
Wigan killed us in the transitions, and there were gaping holes in the middle of the park, which any half-decent team would thread through. Seen towards the end of the first half but also early in the first half, which was an end-to-end show. But it wasn't just in defence and transition where we were poor. The attack was absolutely woeful. The lack of positive forward passing combined with the slow tempo and static movement made the crosses so so easy to defend against. I can't remember more than 2 times we actually tested their goalkeeper seriously.
It isn't just the performance that lacked passion, creativity, or decisiveness, but the tactics that led us to our downfall, failing to create any clear-cut chances and, at times, leaving us wide open. The lack of urgency towards the end and the dearth of options from the bench make it clear we're in no state to be challenging for promotion if this is the tenor of things to come. Warne said he wouldn't just copy what he did at Rotherham, but this style of football reeks of low percentage chuck it in the box and see what happens nonsense i.e., precisely what he did at Rotherham.
I don't think I've seen an opening day performance this bad since Paul Jewell's 08-09 opener against Doncaster. Warne needs to improve and fast if he wants to stay in this job.

I completely understand people who point out it's not easy to sign players, sometimes targets go elsewhere, blah blah. But the clear fact is we massively prioritised the defence and wing back positions in our recruitment this summer and we've neglected the midfield and attack. If we've now run out of money and targets then that is on the management and ownership. Our midfield and attack have needed attention for a long time

See the refs don't change, could have had a penalty and stonewall corner deflected out in front of the ref, neither given.
Anyway after the first 2 mins of Wigan threats, Derby are playing well and have had a couple of chances both of which should have at least been on target.

    Positive so far

We're getting forward really quickly. Which I love. Second corner. Bradley got free. Really should have scored the header. Missed by a whisker. Great pressing. Derby on top.
Second dreadful decision by the ref. Fozzy's shot angling into the corner deflected just wide by the defender. Goalkick! Absolutely shocking.

Only one option to replace Collins / NML when they’re ‘gassed’ on 60 minutes?
Would have been good to have Waggy or Brown on the bench.
Anyway keep the updates coming as me and the boy are missing this one as on holiday 👏

We’re in league 1, this is the mend and make do league, we need to learn how to buy cheap sell high.

The reality is players we would’ve picked up relatively easily in the championship are now off the menu. We’ll have first pick of those at our level and decent loan opportunities.

yes it would’ve been incredible to start with a full set of good strikers but it’s not that realistic, if we get a youngster in and any one of smith / Rhodes / waggy we would’ve done very well.
