  1. The Sunderland Echo newspaper estimated that Sunderland’s promotion to the Championship in 2021/22 would increase their league 1 tv money from between £800,000/ 1million to around £6 million plus an increase in commercial revenue and larger attendances would make a realistic return of around £8-10 million.

With the increased Sky tv deal from season 24/25 League 1 will see a 25% increase from the tv pot whilst the Championship will see an increase of 45%.

So, from 24/25 it’s either a tv deal worth between £1/1.25 million in League 1 or a deal in the Championship worth around £8.7 million plus increased revenues, therefore the financial implications of not getting promoted this season are going to be huge!

…………….I certainly know which league I’d rather be in!

  2. Pinched from the Cheltenham forum.

Derby are precisely one of the clubs where you have to ask “can they afford not to sign May?”

A third season at this level could be disastrous for them. They need to get back to the Championship this time round, and the windfall that brings.

From the EFL on the new tv deal for 2024/25: “According to the existing distribution formula, clubs in the Championship will be approximately 46% better off and 25% in League One and League Two respectively.”

So it could be a £12-15m payday for the promoted sides? How much is League One’s best goal scorer worth when that’s the prize he can win you?

It’s also a lot of money to lose out on if a top club doesn’t sign him and doesn’t get promotion…that’s the risk they have to think about. Can they afford to take that risk?

Age doesn’t matter. Teams like Derby aren’t buying him for the future, they are buying him for one reason only: promotion to the Championship this
    season.

    …………..seems fair comment.

  3. Pinched from today’s local Pompey rag.

Clark’s been a really good club captain and he’s never given me any problems. He’s a really good influence around the dressing room, and it was probably one of the easier conversations I had.

‘We parted company, shook hands and said good luck to each other. So that was one which really well and I genuinely wish Clarke good luck on whatever his next venture is.’

  4. September 1969, Cloughs team had been promoted to League One, 9 matches unbeaten, away to Fairs Cup winners  (google it young uns) Newcastle United, travelled up on the Trent buses football special, travelled back on a different bus, but more of that later, 40,000 crowd.

    David Craig Mackay was unbelievable!

You could see why Clough had persuaded  the 33 year old to sign for the club.  Organising, pointing, shouting, encouraging, passing short, passing long, crunching tackles and strutting around at the back like he owned the place and that clenched fist…………..magnificent.

Anyway, Roy Mac scored the winner, the bus got smashed up and my team Derby County were top of the league!

    ………………..happy days. 👍🐏

  5. Jimmy Greaves…………….on not signing for Brian Clough…

Oh, [I retired] far too young. To be honest, it was that I was a bit fed up with the West Ham situation. I should have gone to Derby County. Brian [Clough] wanted me and really I wish I had gone.

“One of the great things I would have loved to have done was play under The Governer, The Man.

“He’s just got a magic and an aura that’s around him that very few others have. His record stands for itself. He’s done things no other managers have done.

“He’s done things slightly differently. He’s an extrovert, saying what he thinks, telling people this, that, and the other. Having the guts and the courage to be in there pitching and battling.

“To me the man is the greatest and that’s the end of it. I’d have loved to have played underneath him.”

A forward line of Hector, O’Hare and Greaves does have a certain ring about it. 🐏

What effect is the new 24/25 TV contract going to have on Rams games via RamsTV for we expats? Hopefully none.

    EFL deal with Sky

    Pinched from the EFL site.

In the current agreement, roughly 13% of EFL matches are shown by Sky Sports, whereas in the new deal, approximately 56% will be shown

League One and League Two clubs will be live approximately 16 times per season

From the 2024/25 season onward, this new deal with Sky Sports will effectively replace the EFL’s domestic video streaming option provided via iFollow and club streaming services.

Audio services will remain alongside existing audio-visual arrangements for international audiences.

The EFL will be investing significantly in production infrastructure to enhance the viewing experience.

Sky Sports will have a minimum of eight cameras for each game broadcast on existing channels

A minimum of four cameras will be used at Championship and League One matches, and a minimum of two cameras in League Two

For matches available to stream, Sky Sports commentary will also be provided

I’d like to hear the thoughts of Owen on this one.

    …………………well the printable version anyway!

Having been slapped with a five-month ban by the Blues, the 60-year-old’s enforced match-day disconnect has sunk him to the lowest point in his life.

“At half-time, with it being a Her Game Too fixture, I walked into the passageway which leads to the female toilets – not the actual toilets - and joked with him “I identify as a woman”.

‘Then a lady came out of the toilets and told me to get out – which I did.

‘I wasn’t drunk, I’d had a few, but I can hold my drink and was coherent. I was able to have a conversation with the police and the stewards which then came up to me.

Subsequently issued with a fourth ban of the campaign, The Petersfield Bookshop owner is now barred from every Pompey match, friendly and reserve fixture until August 11.

Westwood is charged with driving the minibus to Derby this weekend, ferrying 15 of his friends for Pompey’s last away trip of a disappointing campaign.

Yet while his fellow fans will be attending Pride Park, he will take residence in the Navigation Inn, a 10-minute walk from the stadium.

    ……………….no further comment required!

  8. Considering that just ten months back we were on the verge of handing the club to Kirchner, had five players under contract and no pre season the results and performances so far this season are to quote a well known ex-manager from these parts as “simply remarkable”.

Whats kept this club going over the last eighteen months has been the relationship between the supporters the different management teams and the encouragement towards players, the all in this together, never give up, fight to the end attitude that has served us well.

Personally I will not be criticising the present management, previous managers, or any players who’ve been working their socks off and have decided to stay or sign for this club in extraordinary times whatever the outcome this season.

……….mind you, next season I’ll be back to normal, giving it both barrels big time and look forward to contributing to the reincarnated scapegoat of the week thread! 🐏😃

  9. Pinched from last seasons Sunderland Echo.

“As things currently stand each Championship club, not in receipt of parachute payments, receives about £5-6million from the TV pot. The equivalent in League One is like £800,000 to £1million.”

“The deal at the minute means each Championship club will get around £6million from the TV pot, obviously you can top that up a little bit with the number of times teams are on TV because each individual match has a fee for the club which you can add on.”

The other area where Sunderland could make financial gains in the Championship is through comercial deals and increased matchday attendances.

Around a £8-10million difference would be a realistic benchmark for a club like Sunderland to get out of League One and into the Championship.”

Regardless of any alterations or not to the clubs business plan any opportunity to get out of this league must be taken asap! 👍

    something like this makes sense.

If it’s to be 3 central defenders then Knight and Sibley as wing backs makes more sense.

Mendez-Laing & Barkhuizen operating as wing backs really is “one step beyond”

Jorge Sampaoli has been sounded out about becoming Nottingham Forest manager, with the club mulling over whether to replace Steve Cooper before the end of the campaign.

Sampaoli out of work after being sacked by Sevilla three weeks ago was approached by intermediaries about moving to the City Ground.

He has managed both Argentina and Chile, along with Sevilla – twice – and Marseille, as well as Santos and Atletico Mineiro in Brazil, and Universidad de Chile in his homeland.

The Chilean is also a target for Rio de Janeiro giants Flamengo.

Nottingham or Rio, Nottingham or Rio, Nottingham or Rio

    …………tough choice that one !

Absolutely cant stand him. Nepotism in action.

Your criticism of Darren Ferguson regards nepotism seems rather misplaced.

He played for Wrexham making 310 appearances, scoring 51 goals, captained them to win promotion to Division Two, led the club to its first national trophy (in English football), the Football League Trophy, scoring the second goal in a 2–0 win over Southend United.

Now in his fourth stint of manager at Peterborough he’s racked up over 500 matches in charge with a win percentage at Posh of just under 45%.

League 1 & Championship record of promoted, relegated, promoted, relegated, promoted, relegated.  Paul Warne at Rotherham relegated, promoted, relegated, promoted, relegated, promoted.

Never been sacked at Posh, left by mutual consent twice, resigned at the end of his third stint and the locals still love him.

Nepotism……….if he was related to Barry Fry I’d probably agree.👍

“What is the earliest in a match that a player has been booked for 'time-wasting'?"

On 22 December 1979, Derby County played Liverpool and the Rams were awarded a penalty after just 20 seconds, which they scored. At the time Derby were on a downward spiral towards near-bankruptcy, Robert Maxwell and the old Third Division. Roy McFarland recognised that Derby were unlikely to win against the eventual league champions and so, with not a little humour, on getting the ball from the ensuing kick-off he hoofed the ball high into the stands; the referee was not amused and booked him. The report does not list the exact time, but it was pretty much around the two-minute mark.

……………..after years of watching Archie Gemmill close out the last five minutes of a match down near the corner flag it never occurred to the cheering thousands that it was time wasting.👍🐏

  14. Can definitely recommend The Charters, top scran…………..walk the gangplank!

Real ale features heavily at Charters and the venue is a popular haunt for CAMRA members and other lovers of real ale. The bar is the largest floating real ale emporium in Great Britain, with 8 cask ales on tap doing around 500 guest ales a year. With the largest beer garden in Peterborough, its friendly staff, good atmosphere and suitable for clientele of all ages,

Every few months we seem to make it onto here, one of my favourite twitter pages.

Anyway as someone who has to console themselves with a chicken tikka pukka pie sometimes at PP as I’ve not had chance to eat in town, where in the bloody heck is someone getting these from? Last time we were on was for a Christmas dinner in a tub from inside the stadium!

    One for the connoisseur.

………...any chance of a pre season friendly?
