  1. “Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off."

    Its a red.

Birds fault for their goal, its not like he only miss passed it once for their goal he did it 6 or 7 times at one point mcgoldrick and collins throw his arms in the air and turn towards him! He did better then normal but its still below the standards that are expected. It always happens even to the standard of Sunday morning football you can have someone who can barely kick a ball (a fill in player) and a good standard amateur and always concisely good that 1 player who has a half decent game stands out because hes done more then normal/expected, this is what i feel fans have seen them 2nd balls is his job to win hes a professional footballer hes getting paid to do that it shouldn't be a stand out thing that hes won a couple of second balls against

I'll humour you as it's my original post you're referring to.

Max had a pass success rating of 83% last night. I'm not sure what standards you want from him but I think it's pretty unrealistic to not misplace 7 passes a game? (It was actually 7 in total). How is 83% below the standard required for any level, anywhere? For reference, Kevin De Bruyne has an average of 80.3% this season in passing success, so Max isn't even below the standards set by a world beater. I'm sure Max will be the first to admit his fault for the initial possession loss for their goal but that happens in football, every game by someone or other. There was nothing wrong with his passing last night. I've been a critic when he's been way off whats required but last night wasn't one of those nights.

As for the second balls, seems a miserable take on it. It's Ronaldo's job to score so we shouldn't praise him for scoring any of his 818 goals? Bird isn't a combative midfielder and never has been. He's been asked to be more aggressive both on and off the ball and on last nights evidence is improving in both aspects, certainly vs what we saw against Ipswich and Exeter.

I'm not giving him the MOTD accolade, just purely saying he played well. I'd have gone 6.5 or 7 out of 10 if I rated his performance which I think is more than fair.

  3. That was alright bar the finishing, should have taken the dub home as Morecambe were probably the worst team we've played this season IMO and we had ample opportunity to take the lead.

I thought NML, Bird, Sibley and Wildsmith all had good games. Cashin got better as the game went on after a shaky first 20. Dobbin, Roberts and Collins in the ok column. Fozzy, Smith and McGoldrick in the poor/disjointed/tired descriptors. Oulsa should have bagged. Tommo had two standout moments for the wrong reasons.

I'll put my head above the parapet and say I don't agree with the Dobbin MOTM call, I find him the most frustrating player on the team and here's why. He had two pretty amazing runs in the first half which deserve credit but I thought his final ball, finishing and general play when in really good positions was a real let down tonight, as it has been all season. He reminds me a bit of Theo Robinson, does the hard things well but the easy things terribly. Obviously still young and learning on the job so I'm not writing him off, just thought there were more bad/frustrating things than good things on show. Maybe harsh when he's won us a penalty and has an 'assist' in the stats too but there we go.

What has bird achually done ut makes me sick hes done nothing apart from give the ball away 4 or 5 times with awful passes a weak shot start of the first half get your head out of his arse hes costing us every week

I've been his biggest critic so calm down me duck. So far he's won more second balls tonight than he has all season, had a couple of decent efforts and has kept things ticking over nicely at the back without it being pedestrian as it was under LR.

I'll call him out when I think he deserves it but he's been alright tonight.

  5. Played alright so far, should have been 1-0 up and should have had another chance from the spot. Sucker-punch right there.

McGoldrick has been invisible, probably could do with another body running around in midfield or supporting Collins because they seem to have a lot more space than us on the ball. Bird has been more combative than I've seen previously which is pleasing but him and his mate were too slow for the goal there.

Bird's getting less and less of the ball. 54 touches in Warne's first game, then in the 40s for the next 2 games, and now into the 30s for the last 2. It's a worrying trend.

There's not a lot of fresh games in the memory but having watched him at Ipswich and last night he's just as much to blame for that stat.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but am starting to feel a bit sorry for both Bird and Hourihane. No good saying they aren't playing well when we seem determined to bypass midfield in our approach play.

Agree with most of your post Angie but feel this is a becoming a bit of a myth. How many times does the ball have to go across the back 5 or 4 before Bird and Hourihane show for it? Before they show an ounce of interest and bravery to move the ball up the pitch. I'm not quite sure what PW is trying to do at times but I can't imagine he's told these pair to not show for the ball, not give a wing back an option on the inside, support the forward players when they win a knock down.... they were just invisible. There was no bypassing, if anything there wasn't enough hoofing.

The only player I'd start to feel sorry for is Cashin, as he is left all the responsibility to get the ball moving forward. Bird and Hourihane have been putting in performances like this before Warne arrived, it's not something we didn't see under LR. Pretty sure there's a few old threads knocking about saying just as much.

We obviously want Max to do well and he'll get more leeway than others, being one of our own, but he's got to start bringing something to the table, consistently.

    The expectant comment is interesting.

Id argue that they’re giving us nothing to sing about. When the manager is coming out swinging after the match you know that even he doesn’t think the effort was there.

Before the game it was flat. We started brightly and it was still flat. Think the home crowd in general has just changed mentality. Plenty of backing on Friday night despite not having much to shout about.

Hope for better at the weekend, when we've all had a lie in.

  9. That was a rough watch, no hiding from it.

Before the changes I thought the back 5 had no issues pointlessly playing the ball between themselves Rosenior-esque, it's just the 3 in central midfield were totally invisible (again) and therefor we as a team are unable to progress the ball up the pitch. That coupled with our attacking players who are rarely in the right position and can barely take a first touch worthy of us retaining possession, meant it was a pretty shambolic first 45.

Bit better after the break but still too slow and no where near brave enough. Obviously we need some signings in defence as every man and his dog is having to dig in for us at the back but I don't think that is our area of issue. Midfield and attack, despite having the players and the names, are where we're tragically falling short.

Cashin should have been MOTM (again), not sure how they gave it Fozzy. If I was Warniola I'd get every single forward player to watch how Cashin plays because he sets the standard for intent, tempo and bravery. Worthy mentions for Roberts and the lively Dobbins too.

Pride Park seems way more expectant now, not a lot of backing bar the 50 odd who don't stop in the South Stand. Good turn out though.

i really don't see any development in him, his temperament is poor (silly and reckless fouls) if someone came in for him think we would need to get rid.

Could say that about all our youngsters. Are they better now than they were when they first broke through? Obviously the circumstances of the last couple of years and the managers they have played under haven't helped but to see them look average in League One is concerning all around.

  11. Came away from the game really frustrated but thought we held our own without being too threatening. Until the goal the scoreline was a fair one, which I'd have been delighted with considering the circumstances of where the two teams have been in recent years. Ipswich were the better team afterwards.

    Few mini takeaways:

Wildsmith looks very good, great freebie. Not convinced by Oulsa or Dobbin, they couldn't trap a bag of sand between them. Easy pickings for Ipswich's back 4 but they will do ok against the poorer defences in this league. Bird's inconsistency is worrying - in a division below where I thought his standard was. Korey Smith looked good. Marcus Harness was very good for them.

Onto Tuesday, chill out yer bloody drama queens.
