The first to spring to mind is the one and only Chris Martin

I was thinking Kinkladze and McGrath, but yeah Martin didn't need to run around like a headless chicken he knew where to be. I was always impressed with Morrison like that, he made some great interceptions because he read the game so well, not because he ran around so much.

We have players who will not offer up the discretionary hard running effort in every game.  They will put it in when they are put under pressure and there is fan unrest, but invariably we win those games, the pressure is off for the next game, and they revert to type. This could explain the inconsistency. Our midfield is pretty much made up of these types.

An Arteta, Guardiola, Clough have the ability to squeeze the juice in every game, and typically are good at recruiting the type of player that looks after themselves and will run hard because they want to

We put it in in the supposed harder games - Blackpool, Peterborough, Barnsley etc. Don’t bother for Cheltenham, Cambridge etc

Not that I want to get into a Martin debate, but he had the likes of Bryson to run… we have Smith and Hourihane.

why does our entire game hinge on running round a lot though...

Warne is used to being the underdog, and has the mentality that you're more likely to win if you work harder than the other team to make up for the difference in talent.

And he's had success with that in the past, and he's taking time to adapt to the management of more talented players.

Torquay and Newport pushed us hard last season in the FA Cup and we got away with it. Crewe were the more effective side in the first tie for 80 minutes and once again we got out of jail.

There are only so many times you can undercook a performance against a lower placed side before you get punished.

We need a huge 45 minutes or the knives will be out for Warne again.

they actually have the ball over 60% of the time though so it makes it a lot easier for them.

Warne seems to like not having the ball and for his players to just run all game chasing it

Yes. No-one says you don't have to work hard. But it's depressing to hear the manager suggest that is the most important factor.

Crewe WERE NOT better than us for 80 minutes no way!!

Well it shouldn't really, but if the only way to stop us booting it long from the back is to win it higher up, then we need an ability to press.

That suggests at least our front 5 or 6 need to run around to press the ball, and run around to find space when we attack.
