School isolation rules in England could be brought to an end in autumn, amid concerns about the rising number of children who have to quarantine because they are contacts of confirmed cases.

I thought all restrictions were on target to go on 19 July?

Schools around us are finishing by the 23rd, so they probably think it's not worth messing it about just for the last week.

It should have been changed before now - with isolating kids' siblings able to go to school when they're in different bubbles etc. Got to draw the line somewhere I suppose & I guess we've been quite lucky that my daughter's class has only had to isolate once, when their teacher caught it.

Travelling anywhere

Wearing masks

Having fun

Getting on with your life

Will we be able to have an affair from the 19th July? I'm asking for a friends mum

I read that the first time as "Asking for a friend's bum".

And that's the kind of response that's meant they've been living a normal life for the last year. Thank god we've got a world class test and trace system.

But isn't their vaccination rate incredibly low? They've been relying on keeping it out.

According to my friend in NZ, Aus appear to have cocked up their vacination programme. They have AZ vaccine but told people that it was only safe to give to over 60s - they then dropped that to over 50s and are now telling the public that it's o.k. for everyone. Unsurprisingly, folk are now scared of being vaccinated.....

So you consider locking down whole cities and states at the drop of a hat , having your borders closed to the point citizens returning is not possible for some LIVING A NORMAL LIFE,?????

All Australia have done is delay the inevitable by hiding away - their population is still massively vulnerable to covid.  They are going to have to continue locking down and keeping their borders closed until well into 2022 as their vaccine take up has been abysmal.

Furthermore, places in the world that were initially praised are now coming under threat from the new highly transmissible variants and poor vaccination take up - due in part to the complacency their initial successes gave them.

We've done the Australia vs UK approach to death before, ultimately there was always going to be a cost and there were never going to be any winners.

They've bought themselves time. If they'd managed to couple up their test and trace program with a vaccination program like ours, they'd be the model study in how to deal with pandemics. Their death rates are exceptional, but they've had to isolate themselves. If they'd done a better job with the vaccination program, they could be living a normal life by now.

Well now we're back to the long term damage of lockdowns and whether the cost of them is greater than the benefits.  Scientists will no doubt be debating that question for years...

I get your point, but with that many cases, it's achievable to get back to zero cases with only a couple of weeks in lockdown

As opposed to 3+ months in lockdown trying to get cases down to a manageable level in terms of hospitalisation, but that just immediately seed a further wave as soon as you open up

Not saying I agree, I'm just saying it's not that crazy

Is that true of the more highly transmissible Delta variant?
