The Phantom of the Open: Mark Rylance as watchable as ever playing Maurice Flitcroft, the guerrilla golfing legend.

A touching, gentle and endearing outing and well worth a watch.

Hit Man (Cinema & Netflix)

Geeky college lecturer (Glen Powell) helps the police unmask and arrest people trying to hire hit men by pretending to be one - then falls for one of the women (Adria Arjona) who wants him to deal with her controlling husband. Loosely based on a true story.

Darkly comic, well scripted & pretty original. I found the ending quite unsatisfying though - which is odd, as that is the bit that was made up and therefore could have been better.

Not bad. 6/10

Watched it in the cinema when it came out, was favourite film of 2023. Incredible. Did you watch it in Japanese?

I did, yes. Really don't fancy watching a dubbed movie.

Hollywood's got to get with the programme in the next couple of years. Now you can have AI allow you to speak in whatever language you want, without needing an actor to dub the voice. So the Japanese actors in this film could simply speak in English.

Here's an AI teacher who can't speak Hindi, speaking Hindi! https://www.linkedin.com/posts/emollick_hows-my-hindi-following-up-on-the-fake-activity-7149084946807062528-ktWP/ [In fact the whole vid is a deep fake but it doesn't need to be]

Meanwhile, I feel I have to watch the film (with subtitles for now, obvs).

Cheers for the heads up on this one. I'd totally forgotten about it. Planned to watch it when it originally came out but never got around to it. Will try to watch it over the weekend. 👍

I always watch things with subtitles on anyway so much prefer the original language of foreign films/tv/anime than dubbed rubbish

If you ever watch an English language film on Italian TV, it's always dubbed into Italian. It's awful - not because you may understand little of the dialogue, but because the voices they give the actors are usually incongruous. You want Clint Eastwood to sound like Clint Eastwood, not an Italian.

I think Death Wish would have been great if they’d overdubbed Charles Bronson with Kenneth Williams’ voice.

The Invitation

American woman appears to be the long lost relative of a massively wealthy english family and is invited to join them in their huge gothic mansion for wedding celebrations.

Mildly amusing if lightweight vampire story. Looks OK & acting OK (always good to see Sean Pertwee). Annoyed me with the fakery every time they showed exterior shots of the mansion, as it's obviously a big american house. Even their Rolls Royce is left hand drive.

OK if you like this sort of thing. 5/10
