Due to long term injuries, a reluctance to use the academy, and not making full use of the loan system, we effectively had a 15 man squad for the league last season (those who played more than 100 minutes)

We will be increasing the effective first team squad from 15 to 20-22 - a considerable increase.

Warne has commented that we will aim to sign 3 'forwards'. This will almost certainly be 2 CFs and 1 AM/SS/W.

thats against the backdrop of a limited transfer budget and free agents. My concern is that many of the ok striker free agents have been signed already? Given that warne is looking at signing 3 forwards

  2. for context ... i wasnt actually thinking are we missing out on certain players. I am just wondering if how many players we might at this point have missed out on, in as much as they could improve our current overall squad. i wanted to look at strikers, but may be attacking midfielders should also be looked at.

I think we probably need to sign 3 new strikers, especially as i dont consider collins as good enough or to be a player that will score a huge amount of goals in the coming season and even if he could he cant be expected to lead the line for multiple games.

The club has both a limited transfer budget and needs to rely on free agents and loan players. With that in mind are there players we have missed out on that could have improved the current squad.

Our current squad seemed exhausted towards the end of the season, not many of our players looked like contributing a lot of goals.

At the end of last season, our team was not strong enough to secure a play off place.

  3. Would any of the following players, have significantly improved our clubs attacking line ...

    Josh Gordon (Barrow) to Burton,

    Cole Stockton (Morecambe) to Burton,

    Danny Mayor (Plymouth) to Fleetwood,

    Reeco Hackett-Fairchild (Portsmouth) to Lincoln,

    Christian Saydee (Bournemouth) to Portsmouth,

    Conor Shaughnessy (Burton) to Portsmouth,

    Anthony Scully (Wigan) to Portsmouth,

Dan Agyei (Crewe) to Leyton Orient,

Ethan Galbraith (Man United) to Leyton Orient,

Max Sanders (Lincoln) to Leyton Orient,

    Alistair Smith (Sutton) to Lincoln.

    Whytte to Portsmouth

I wonder if this is true ...

"The report claims that Birmingham will pay less than £1 million in initial fees in the deals with Derby and Leeds, which is particularly helpful given the Championship club is operating on a tight budget this summer.

If Eustace is able to help both players fulfill their potential, this double-swoop could end up looking like a masterstroke - particularly given the pair cost their last club more than £10 million in combined transfer fees (Bielik £8m and Roberts £2.5m)."

Ive used flw here, because i didnt find another article where the fee was mentioned.

Sor for Bielik and Roberts a combined fee of £1 million. Bielik's fee could rise to 1 million over time, however Birmingham got a heck of a bargain.

This doesn't inspire me with confidence over the transfer negotiation ability of our club.

I guess the one plus is the reduction from our wage bill, but that was largely covered last season by his loan to Birmingham and probably would have been again had we decided to loan him to another club. We would not have received a fee in a years time for him, but it kind of feels like we have not received a fee for him any way. If to give value to it, i estimated we sold Bielik a player who initially cost us 8 million, to Birmingham for 500k.

While i admit Bielik probably is not worth a lot, i think hes worth more than 500k to 1 million, assuming the club eventually gets the 1 million.

  5. In a 352 formation, we probably need four strikers. If Washington isn't a first choice player I think he's not the worse signing.

I doubt he will score 15 goals in a season.

He's not a direct replacement for mcgoldrick.

He's not going to be a game changer.

He has previous league one experience.

    He's an extra striker.

He's not better than alfie may for example.

Hia style of play is known by Warne, and therefore probably fits what Warne wants to do with the team.

    Hes not an inspirational signing.

He's a player that I doubt it's a hard fought battle to sign.

First link was in May 2021 when Rooney was in charge.

Second link was in March and appears to be just a bunch of transfer suggestions, not actual transfer rumours and none of the 3 were even mentioned.

I guess you missed the part in the 2nd link, so here it is "Therefore, Warne should be pursuing a new goalkeeper in the summer and with Josh Vickers out of contract at Rotherham United, he may opt to bring in someone he knows very well."

    1. Indeed. We used, IIRC, 21 players last season. All we had if you discount the 2nd and 3rd keepers. No chance to rotate players who needed a rest. No chance to rotate a player to prevent him being in need of a rest.

    2. If you discount Loach and Oduroh, we currently have 14 senior players. 5 or 6 new players? We need between 10 and 12 or we'll be back in the same situation we were in last season, running out of steam.

Rosenoir knew that to field a team derby had to have a minimum number of players, agree or disagree with who he brought in, he still managed to sign a lot of players in a very short time. PW has got a lot more experience than Rosenoir, so i would have expected at least 1 signing in the days since the window opened.

Last season we missed out on a number of free agents signings before we came to the table, the window between when Rosenoir began to sign players and when PW signs his first player is narrowing. Rosenoir in my opinion was left with having to sign any player he could find that was willing to sign, and not looking at building at a particular formation. As a tactic it appeared to get us very close to the play offs at least, i admit PW was largely responsible for the tactics, but it was largely Rosenoirs selection.

The players Rosenoir signed, i dont think, were told that they they had to be a certain type of player to be able to play.

  8. Warne's job is simple, to make us stronger than Barnsley, Bolton, Peterborough, Portsmouth, Wycomb, Reading, Blackpool and Wigan.

It's likely that all of those teams will strengthen in the transfer window.

We have started the transfer window by weakening the team, our best player left us.

We have one striker left and he's not scoring 15 plus goals in a season.

Pw likes to play 352. I reckon that means we need at least 3 strikers, and potentially 4 strikers since it would be good to have players we can rotate.

We were one of the smallest teams in the league and it showed towards the end of the season, when our players looked tired.

If this is to be a promotion push changes then the 5 or 6 new players we need, should be signed soon to give them time to bond with the team.

Pw will definitely be a failure in my eyes if he signs relatively few players before the window closes.

It's bringing in talent that attracts other players to sign, in the belief we are a club that wants to progress.

Pw knows these things, but in my opinion he doesn't get to hide behind, we'll we tried to sign these players but we're out bid.

At least not with free agents.

I'm not buying into his excuses that they have to be team players either, there's nothing wrong with having some quality talent that wants to be treated that way. We are not building a children's football team that has the desire to let every player play, but a team that needs to have the desire to win.

Pw will know that we must sign defenders because we are weak in that area.

If you have limited financial means as a club you don't wait for the perfect player to come along in order to be able to create the perfect team.

In the past we tried to play the so called "Derby way", look how that worked out for us. Now we have the pw way, it might or might not work out for us.

Well, thank you so much for your insightful remark. It's obvious that we've discovered the forum's Kevin Hart right here. When we can just reply with an emoji, why bother having lengthy conversations about future transfers? The next time I have the audacity to publish about transfers, I'll be sure to keep in mind your smart comment. Keep on thanking us with your emoji criticism; it certainly raises the bar for this conversation. You are a true example of contemporary communication.

  10. James Collins scoring tally, at nearly 33 he will get slower ...

    22/23 - 11 league goals for Derby.

    21/22 - 3 championship goals.

    20/21 - 10 championship goals.

    19/20 - 14 championship goals

    18/19 - 25 league one goals.

    17/18 - 19 league two goals.

    16/17 - 20 league Two goals

Also note that higher goal tallies were several years ago and in League 1 and 2, where technically it should be easier to score and yet last season in the league he scored 11 goals. That's not value for money when it comes to considering season ticket renewal.

Given our current situation, I wouldn't blame pw if he decided to go all in for Alfie May.

Zero reason a club lower than us, like Charlton should beat us to his signature.

I'd only be unhappy with pw if he doesn't consider Collins as less than useful as a player in a promotion attempt year.

We don't need a player who might score 12 goals, we need a player who's capable of scoring 20 goals in a season.

We also need more goals from our midfielder, as previous posters have stated.

I think we actually need 2 striker who can score more than 15 goals in a season.

On top of that our defense, basically neede a total rebuild.

I think we would be OK signing 8 new players this summer or at least 6 new players.

As such we need to see immediate movement in the transfer market.

It really is annoying! It's one thing to have those conversations in private, but the constant chirping in the press is classless, especially given the role Derby have played in developing Knight as a player. That said, I think we all knew he would go and having committed to the last two season when  others were vanishing like rats off a sinking ship, he really doesn't owe the club anything. Compare and contrast his attitude to that of Bielik, Byrne and Buchanan, all of whom couln't wait to jump ship. His loyalty (as with Bird too) is admirable and I'd hope if he does go, he'll do so with the blessing of the majority of Rams fans. He certainly has my thanks and admiration, for the little that's worth.

EDIT - Just seen @Carnero's post above. f*** yeah! Come on Jase lad, one more tilt at the rainbow can't hurt!

At least derby will get a fee for him.

    His leaving weakens the club.

Yep, that's the nuts and bolts of it but sadly I fear the figures may be rather different to the £1.5M bandied about by a few. Looking at the DCFC Creditor Listing at time of admin, the club owed £8.37m in outstanding player registration fees and £504,000 in agents' commission. Most, if not all of that figure relates to solely to the Kamil Jóźwiak and Bielik fees.

We were told at the time that the surprisingly generous £2.5M paid by MLS outfit Charlotte FC more or less cleared the Jóźwiak debt to Lech Poznan, so we can safely assume that at that point, we still owed Arsenal not far off £6M for Bielik - bear in mind that Arsenal kindly deferred an instalment which is why the figure was higher than we'd all hoped at the time.

Hard to know how much of that figure has been cleared down since July 2022, but my guess would be £2M at best, based on the likely instalments - approximately £2m per annum over 4 years. That leaves us with around £4M still to pay. Obviously if Clowes decided to cover the deferred payment when he took control, that number would half but I think the £1.5M some have quoted is probably highly optimistic.

Depressing and for my money, the worst call of Mad Mel's tenure, though I concede that I was pretty excited when we signed him as pre-injury, the lad looked an absolute beast. When we signed Bradders and that midfielder who was so f****** bland that I've forgotten his name for around £11 million combined, I thought we'd taken leave of our senses, but £8M plus add-ons (none of which will be paid, thankfully) for Bielik trumps it by some way.

By my count, Bielik has played @48 league games for Derby. He's only 13 games short of that figure for Birmingham. Grim AF and my guess is that his likely fee should he stay at Brum would be little more than a miserly £1 million, leaving the club with somewhere between £1M and £3M still to pay, with the latter figure most likely IMO.

Had he honoured his contract, there's little doubt in my mind we'd already be back in the Championship, but I'm heartened by the fact that he got to fulfil his ambition to play in a World Cup, because that's what really matters 🤐

Take into consideration that if we don't sell him, a year from now he's a free agent.

We will not recover a large portion of his fee through his sale. Its probably be better to sell than to loan him out again.
