Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling has urged Derby County to stick with Paul Warne after missing out on the League One play-offs.

From my own point of view, he got Rotherham fc, promoted on several occasions and on a very low budget.

Our owner spent a lot on buying the club out of a potential bankruptcy.

Then he brought in a league one promotion specialist, gave him a 4 year contract worth several million. The owner trust Warne.

Warne inherited a team thar weren't his choice, littles changed since thar time. He's been constricted by not having a transfer budget.

In the summer we almost didn't meet the league requirements to for a team, we had to bring in a lot of players as free agents, just to survive.

We are rebuilding, as the old saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Our squad requires an overhaul and its difficult to do on just free agents.

Warne wants to bring in better players than we have now, but he's not allowed to spend money doing that.

Doesn't matter that when I watched games in the 1970s, 80s etc we faced different struggles. We are where we are.

Doesn't matter that we are punished by the efl, that it might appear unjust.

What matters is that there's a job to be done in rebuilding the team. There's a job to be done in rebuilding the club's reputation.

I've previously listed free agents that are available and might play for us at this level, the general response seemed to be 1% are players we might want to sign. A very narrow field, good job we have a new head of recruitment to help with the rebuild.

I fear you are right Odben.

Unless the efl loosen their grip, we'll struggle next year. This year's unbalanced squad will deteriorate. Any of our older players still here next year will be a year older and much as it pains me to say, Bird and Knight deserve to play higher up the league.

I hope Cashin stays, but I can see offers coming in for him.

One thing I don't want to see is any more Premier League loanees. I'd much rather look for out of contract Division One or Division Two players that fit Warne's player profile, young, athletic, and hopefully with a point to prove. They will also know the League, which I believe is very important.

I wanted to check which clubs had something sumilar to derby county and how it was similar, and my point is there were many instances when punishments were reduced, but that efl don't look like reducing ours. I know the topic has already been over discussed, which leads me to think that the efl simply dont care about how much harm they cause the fans, even when the root cause us the owner who goes unpunished and moves on. Leaving the fans to suffer from punishment handed out by the fans. This is from Chatgpt:

Some Derby County fans may consider their club's two-year transfer ban as unjust, especially when compared to other EFL punishments that have been reduced or weakened. The feeling of unfairness arises from the perception that the English Football League (EFL) has inconsistently applied its rules and sanctions, with certain clubs seemingly receiving more lenient treatment.

One notable example is Sheffield Wednesday, who initially received a 12-point deduction in the 2020-21 season for breaching EFL financial regulations. The club was found guilty of misconduct for including the sale of their Hillsborough Stadium in their 2017-18 accounts, despite the transaction not being completed until a later date. However, after an appeal, the EFL reduced the punishment to a 6-point deduction, taking into account the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the club. This decision may have been perceived as more lenient by Derby County fans, especially in light of their own club's transfer ban.

Other examples of seemingly inconsistent EFL punishments include:

Birmingham City: In the 2018-19 season, Birmingham City was docked 9 points for breaching the EFL's profitability and sustainability rules. The club had exceeded the allowed losses of £39 million over a three-year period. Despite this significant breach, the punishment was not as severe as Derby County's transfer ban.

Bolton Wanderers: In the 2019-20 season, Bolton Wanderers faced a 12-point deduction and a transfer embargo due to financial issues and failure to fulfill fixtures. However, the club avoided further sanctions, and the EFL allowed them to start the 2020-21 season after new owners took over. This might be viewed as a more favorable outcome compared to Derby County's situation.

Macclesfield Town: The club faced multiple points deductions and fines during the 2019-20 season due to financial issues, late payment of wages, and failure to fulfill fixtures. However, these sanctions did not include a transfer ban.

Blackpool FC: In 2019, Blackpool faced a 12-point deduction after the club went into receivership. However, the EFL suspended the points deduction due to a change in ownership, which resolved the club's financial issues. This case might be seen as lenient compared to Derby County's situation.

Leeds United: In 2014, Leeds United received a temporary transfer embargo for breaching the EFL's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. The club had exceeded the permitted losses of £8 million for the 2013-14 season. The embargo was lifted after the club demonstrated that they had rectified the issue. This punishment might also be seen as more lenient than Derby County's transfer ban.

While each case has its own specific context and circumstances, the perception of inconsistency in EFL punishments may lead some Derby County fans to feel that their club has been treated unfairly. It is important to note that the EFL makes decisions based on the evidence and context available at the time, and there may be factors that are not apparent to the public. Nonetheless, the feeling of injustice among Derby County fans is likely fueled by these comparisons and the belief that their club's punishment is disproportionate to the offenses committed.

Yer we need some new players B4 that's for real. I hope the ones you mentioned stay with us.

People can start slagging Warne after he's had a proper transfer window and got in the players he wants and results aren't where they should be.

Until then they need to wind their necks in.

    I agree with you.

One thing, I don't see how we go from now to being better, if we can only sign free agents. Free agents are highly unlikely to change this squad and in any case I listed a lot of potential free agents and 1% seemed to get picked by other fans as being good enough for us. For me, that clearly shows that we can't build a strong enough team from free agents and loan signings.

In my opinion, We have one more years punishment from the efl, before we can go all out for a promotion push, due in part to us being allowed a transfer budget.

Pw can bring in some players this summer, ahead of him in the order of where players are going to go ...

    1. Any club paying even a small fee gets the pick of the players;

    2. Championship teams get priority;

    3. League one will fight it out for what's left, but will need to offer particularly high salaries to fend of other clubs.

    4. We have a longer time to prepare for the transfer window this time.

    5. Pw went on record saying he only wants to sign players that are improvement to what we have now, plus I think I recall reading some where that he wants to sign players under 30.

Signing players under 30 means they will have more energy by the end of the season.

Many free agents are injury prone or are older than 30.

Players that are 32 years or older have little resale value.

Loan signings are difficult to predict, how good they will be.

  4. https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/under-normal-circumstances-derby-county-fan-pundit-outlines-paul-warne-play-off-concern/

Derby fan pundit Shaun Woodward is concerned that Warne's influence is tempered by the fact he's not had long enough to build a squad.

He told FLW: “I think under normal circumstances it would be huge to have someone like Paul Warne guiding us into the play-offs and through the play-offs because he is used to doing so well at Rotherham.

“However, I think this year I don’t think it really makes much of a difference because this isn't his team as such, he hasn't got the players and the characters that he would probably want if I'm honest through the whole squad. So, I think at the moment yes it helps the players knowing that they've got a manager that's been there and done it, but a lot of these players are really experienced anyway, and they probably don't need a manager to kind of help them perform on the day, maybe some of the younger players will look at him to guide them.

“But ultimately, I think it's down to the players more than Paul Warne this season I think next season maybe moving forward when he can get his own players and yes it will be massive having someone like him at the helm but right now, I think it's more down to the players.”

  5. These free agent in the summer, players might be good signings for us ...

James Wilson (Port Vale, 27, forward)

Macauley Bonne (Charlton Athletic, 27, forward)

Josh Sheehan (Bolton Wanderers, 28, midfielder)

Liam Moore (Formerly with Reading, 30, centre-back)

Josh Key (Exeter City, 23, right-back)

Josh Onomah (Preston North End, 26, midfielder)

Josh Koroma (Huddersfield Town, 26, winger)

Bradley Dack (Blackburn Rovers, 29, attacking midfielder)

    Smith isn't a wingback

Warne prefers 3 at the back. We don't yet know if he'll recruit for 343 or 352. Based on the players we have under contract for next season and the available free agents, 343 would be the better choice.
We've tried Mendez-Laing and Barkhuizen as wing backs and they clearly don't enjoy it there and neither are CFs. It's either sell them (or let them leave for free) to recruit to 352, or keep them and recruit to 343.

Unless we sell players, I imagine the squad would look more like this:

    GK: Wildsmith, New, Evans
    RCB: New, Rooney
    CB: New, New
    LCB: Cashin, Roberts
    RWB: Knight, New
    LWB: New
    RCM: Bird, Smith
    LCM: Hourihane, Tommo
    RW: Mendez-Laing, New
    LW: Sibley, Barkhuizen
    CF: McGoldrick, New, Collins

Optomistic as i dont see Knight as staying, since he's a free agent in the summer.

McGoldrick as a free agent in the summer might also leave, he said he was waiting to see what happens to Derby by the end of the season.

  7. The following list of summer free agents could improve our club...

    Ryan Manning (Swansea, 26, left-back/wing-back)

Oli McBurnie (Sheffield United, 26, forward)

Ben Brereton-Diaz (Blackburn Rovers, 23, forward)

    Chiedozie Ogbene (Rotherham, 25, winger)

    Jordan Thorniley (Blackpool, 26, centre-back)

Jay Dasilva (Bristol City, 24, left-back)

    Wes Harding (Rotherham, 26, right-back)

Joel Latibeaudiere (Swansea, 23, right back/wing-back)

Ollie Norwood (Sheffield United, 31, central midfielder)

Maxime Colin (Birmingham City, 31, right-back)

    I share this concern OB.

Should we make the play-offs then many free agents will have already agreed terms or be a long way down that road, before we throw our hat in the ring and with the 23-30 age range we need then the pool of what's available could leave slim pickings for players who PW genuinely feels will improve us - as you said, we can all see it and its completely understandable.

With many of our squad out of contract, returning loans, or probably not having a future with us then we have another big re-build for next season, meaning the new squad will need 'time to gel' or 'no proper preseason behind them' will be used if we don't hit the ground running.

I don't think fans will be as patient as we have. I suspect it will mean another season of several loan players.

We don't have any youngsters showing enough and I don't think we even have a pathway available now to the first team if we did. Those we had have left to find the grass is certainly not greener.

I enjoy the debates, opinions and rumours created from the free agent lists but will be pleased when the club can finally work properly again in the transfer market

I don't see us guaranteeing a play-off slot given our next two opponents.

Aside from that next season, what exactly can pw do to build strength given the transfer restrictions?

As a result, the outright push for promotion will come in the season when transfers are allowed again.

That doesn't 100% resolve the issues either. Sure we will have a transfer budget but so will other clubs.

Whenever we get our transfer budget back, we'll need to go all out for promotion.

As to pw, the owners are not getting rid of him, he's on a 4 year contract, as is his staff.

As for this transfer window, what prevents us from getting similar players to last season?

Older players, end of their careers, little sell on value. By the season's end, they're too tired.

Things will be a lot different with far more players available.

That might be true, I'm concerned that a lot of clubs compete for talent amongst the free agents, which means it's a challenge.

Several new teams join league one next season.

Pw says he will only buy if they improve what we have now, and keep team harmony.

If any club is willing to pay a transfer fee or higher salary, we don't get the player.

We get an early start than last summer, in terms of trying to bring talent in.

It's my belief the team requires surgery ie a big change with many new faces that better fit the 352 formation that pw is on record as saying he wants to play.

I read that pw is looking for players in the 23 to 30 age range, that makes the challenge harder, but understandable if he wants resale value for players.

The summer after this the club finally gets to spend some transfer money, I'm excited about that.

Speaking to Derbyshire Live, he said: “We’re trying to bring a striker in that suits us and suits the way we play. If we can’t, then we can’t, there’s no point in just going to get a striker for strikers’ sake.”

Warne is keen to ensure that his side doesn’t repeat the mistakes of the past, with squad harmony a huge factor in his decision-making.

“That’s the problem with January and I don’t like the January window. It is literally there for mistakes that have been made in the previous summer because that’s really what you’re doing which is trying to correct what went wrong.

“We have a substantial amount left of the budget available but it has to improve what we’ve got and if it isn’t going to improve what we got then I’m not going to spend it.”

Warne confirmed that he is still in the market for a striker but he will not be pressured into signing one for the sake of it.

Assuming with a high probability that knight leaves, mcgoldrick might sign an extension soon, then who?

Has to be a player that wants to sign for us, is available on a free and is an improvement on what we currently have and is the right side of 30.

We need to fill roles at every level, defense, midfield and attack.

I'd even take an upgrade on our goalkeeper
