I’m not suggesting Warne leaves, or that I want him gone, but I think some questions can be raised about how he is setting us up. NML and Barks as wingbacks seems counter productive and leave us exposed and stops them being effective further up the pitch. Surely fozzy or Robert’s should be in one of those spots. We have really technical players in midfield, but we are just bypassing them - bird had some of the lowest number of touches for any player on the pitch. It is a worry to me that he is seemingly setting us up like his Rotherham team when we don’t have players suited to that. He needs more time, but right now I don’t think he’s getting the most out of the tools at his disposal and that is concerning.

I’m not sure I agree with you about the summer signings. I thought they were all similar types of players who seemed to fit fairly well into a system that Liam Rosenior wanted to play. They didn’t seem like a random bunch.
I think that, looking at the players we can put out, we should be expecting far better than what we saw tonight. We offered absolutely nothing. I don’t think that the position the club was in 3/4 months ago has much bearing now, the world of football just moves so fast. We have a team that should be more than competitive. Hopefully things turn around for Warne as he seems a good bloke, but he’s going to have to change tactics to get much out of this team.

We've only played a few games under Warne so we shouldn't jump to conclusions.
The immediate problem in my opinion is the system. We're playing a 352 with players who do not suit the formation. It's square pegs in round holes again. We just look lost at times. To play that system you need proper wingbacks, we don't have any.
He is obviously a good manager, getting a club like Rotherham promoted 3 times isn't luck. The squad we have also has good players. But maybe not the right combination of players at this time for what Warne is trying to do.

I think we clearly struggled to get of all the players we wanted, right back being the obvious issue. But as you say, it’s very obvious that we were building towards a 433/4231 possession-based system. Literally the antithesis of the the way Warne wants us to play.
The really frustrating thing for me is that we will never have a better chance to build a team from scratch. There’s nobody here that doesn’t want to be here. There’s no leftovers from a previous managers style. We had the chance to decide exactly what we wanted to be and then go and do it. And we’ve absolutely ****ed that chance.

My first experience of Warne-ball and I’m not convinced by it. Looks like a lot of hoof and case. Just bypass the midfield and hope for second balls. Maybe it will look a bit better when Collins comes back in, but that was well below what I’d expect from Derby. I don’t think we can have any complaints about losing that, as we offered nothing - Ipswich better in all departments.
I like Warne the man, but I’m already getting a feeling that he’s the wrong man for the job. It’s only been five/six games so I will give him more time, but things have to improve quickly if we have any aspirations of the play offs.

DCFC_Sloth got a reaction from RadioactiveWaste in Wiil you be disappointed if we finish outside the top 2???
I think we have to be somewhat realistic. On paper, we’ve signed some really good players for the level, but the reality is they are coming to League one for a reason. Most are coming to the end of their careers and won’t be the best version of themselves. Most will have a lost a bit physically. On the flip side, we also have a lot of young players who will naturally dip and peak through the season. As we’ve seen from a lot of the young players who have come through, the second season often proves tough - Sibley, bird, knight all dropped off before (in bird and knight’s case) kicking on again. There is also a question over who might leave. Judging by the training photos, Bielik seems to be away - no present and squad numbers given to Chester. There are increasing reports of clubs sniffing round other players too. Furthermore, this is a team full of new faces and personalities. It will take time for it to gel. We will likely start slow, or erratically so it will be important to stay with the project.
However, despite all the depressing realism above, the team is looking really strong and despite some potential dips in form or fitness, there is a lot of know how in the team and a lot of players with good potential. This doesn’t look like a team that is being put together for a slow build, so I’d expect us to be going for promotion. It looks like a side that is being put together with top six as a bare minimum. Although I don’t expect us to blow the league away, I’d be disappointed if we didn’t make that top six goal.

Tom is very much a marmite player for most people on here, though I’m not so sure I view him particularly strongly in either direction. I can’t say I’m that bothered by him leaving; I am neither delighted he has ended his association with the club, or devastated he is gone. Despite his potential, he was never able to have a long term impact, whether through injury, suspension, or erratic form. When he was ‘on it’, he was fantastic for us. The games against Sheffield United and Bournemouth really stand out from this season. For every wonderful moment, however, there seemed to be something silly to go with it. The red card vs Peterborough that saw him suspended for three crucial games, for example. For me, he will go down as a player who had undoubted potential, but lacked the motivation and focus to be consistent. The majority of good Lawrence performances come against top teams and he often goes missing vs weaker ones. In other words, I think he lacks the ability to really motivate himself on lesser occasions. Overall, he was inconsistent and was never able to really kick on when he needed to. His 62 goals and assists in 184 games puts him in a 1 g/a in every 3 games category, which is fine for a middling championship player - something Lawrence could and should be far more than.

Blimey! Feels like a massive weight has been lifted!

Work turns to the on field stuff now, and must start imminently. A decision has to be made on the manager - it’s a real chance for someone to build their team with their identity - and it is imperative it is made now. If that is Rosenior, then appoint him, if not, let him go now. We also need to start assembling a squad in time for the pre-season games. Get the players re-signed, get the trialists in. We also need to make sure this can never happen again. The ground can never be separated from the club again. The club can never be gambled again. Livelihoods should never be risked like this again.

They are problems for DC, however. Tonight, as fans, we all need to celebrate and enjoy the fact that we will continue to exist. Enjoy it, but enjoy it by being f’in disciplined!
