Kernow got a reaction from Zag zig in Now we're promoted, what are your thoughts on League One ?
My thoughts are that it feels like proper football. I’m becoming increasingly alienated by modern, elite football. I watch it less and less now, and when I do watch it, the enjoyment is sucked out by the way it’s organised and run.
There’s real supporters who support less glamorous clubs because they love them. Not because they win anything or because it’s a tourist attraction. 1700 fans travelled from little Carlisle, just to watch their team that were relegated weeks ago. That’s proper football.
There’s obviously far less money, the facilities are nowhere near as good, the players can’t quite play the same kind of football, but it’s strangely enjoyable.
From scoring two in added time at Port Vale, to Wilson’s header against Bolton, to watching Collins’ penalty at Forest Green from a grass verge outside the ground because the one single turnstile wasn’t working quick enough, it’s been great.
Although saying that, I’m hoping we don’t have to return any time soon!

There are a hell of a lot of good players available on a free. Free doesn’t necessarily mean old or unwanted, but we obviously know we’ve been limited with who we could attract over the last two years.
Again, other costs come in to it, higher wages & agent fees etc., so a lot of these will be out of our reach. But you could probably piece together an entire squad of 18 that would be realistic options for us, and give us a very strong team of a decent age. And that’s just from one league.

I was looking back at pre-season threads to see how the general feel for the season was, compared to how it went (around page 26 if you’re interested) and came across this. One of the many threads where Daniel never gave up faith even if things weren’t going too well.
I looked up and saw his tribute on the scoreboard, and that was just as good as the goals for me yesterday.

The links have started already, Bosun Lawal who has been on loan at Fleetwood this season. With a name like that, he might be more suited to Portsmouth.

I want to give some credit to the Carlisle fans, too. Being from an extremity of the country, albeit the complete other end, I understand that it can be hard to travel to watch your team often.
I thought their fans were great, even after the pitch invasion and their players quickly dashed off the pitch, they still stayed there singing away and I noticed quite a few of our fans on the pitch applauding that.
They weren’t a bad side either, certainly better than their points and position suggest. They played some decent stuff and added to what was a great day all round.
The only downside is that there were probably some fans who could’ve got tickets but missed out because there were some empty seats in their end. I get it’s hard with the segregation, but I thought just over 31,000 was a little disappointing given how many wanted to be there.

We don’t know the reason for it but Daniel just stopped breathing in his sleep. The ambulance crew got a very faint heartbeat, so he went onto life support in ICU but he died two days later. Nothing showed up on hospital tests or the digital autopsy, so the coroner stated natural causes. He had a cold prior to it but had said he was feeling better. It seems that he would felt very little if anything when he stopped breathing, which is some comfort. The night before he had been at the Crewe away match and had fish and chips for his dinner. I’m glad he was doing something he loved on his last evening. Today is very tough 💔

We’re in a rare position, season finished in April and we have two full months before contracts even expire to look at who we might be able to pick up on a free.
The first game of the season is the weekend around the 10th of August. That’s 15 weeks before our next competitive game, a hell of a lot of time to do a hell of a lot of work on getting this squad ready to compete in the Championship.

Obviously very, very early days but I had a quick look at the initial odds on SkyBet for next season for all the teams that are 100% in the Championship next season.
There’s no market for relegation yet, but there’s 5 teams “less likely” than us to go up so far. If we can get some good business done early I don’t see why we can’t be comfortably mid-table next year.

It’s just people on the wind up. Every season there’s a runners-up trophy, I don’t think it’s always presented on the pitch like that but that’s up to us. I saw a photo of Ipswich’s last season too. It does make sense that you’d get one for finishing second if the play-off winners get one, that’s just an extension to the season after all.

Not sure if I am alone in this today but I feel an overwhelming sense of closure after yesterday’s achievement. What a relief to be back in the Championship. But it’s more than that.
It feels like all the hurt over the last couple of years: the administration, the points deductions, the financial turmoil, the humiliation, the relegation; it feels like we can finally turn the page on that sordid chapter of our history. Like we can move on.
I’m not sure why I’m sharing this, but it feels even more personal for me than that, too. In the summer of our relegation, I lost my grandmother to cancer. She was the major connection to Derby for me. My whole ritual of going to the matches involved staying with her for the weekend. For some reason Derby County, the city of Derby, the supporters bus that would pick my Grandad and I up from outside The Gate in Swanwick, the cone of chips before the game, all just seemed to have disappeared.
I know it sounds strange but I feel like I lost my connection to the club in so many ways that summer.
Yesterday, watching everyone celebrating and the tears and David Clowes and Ed Dawe’s’ tears, just felt like closure. The end of the trauma and the start of something new. It felt like moving on.
Thank you, Mr Clowes, for all of that 🐏
