People who say onvalope not envelope

Hummmm not a problem for me. It's a French derived word and although unusual these days still perfectly valid. .. We might as well argue about tomato or often or aunt

only thing that matters to me is clarity and there is a total lack of it in a lot of newspeak. I'd rather listen to Kate Winslett than anyway but Essex :D

  2. When I have just fixed the leaky gutter joint with some nifty ladder work and am insanely pleased with my still intact real man skills, then 3 days laters a tile slides off the roof clouts another bit of gutter that starts leaking AND this time it's where I can't get to with a ladder so will end up with a pro doing the job and a load of scaffolding and subsequent damage to wallet.

  3. One that has been getting my goat recently ....

All of those folk with built in / in car blue tooth for their phones and they STILL use them in their hands while driving

seen a Porsche Cayenne 65 plate and plonker with phone glued to his ear driving up Abbey street

ok so we all know it's dangerous to use your phone and against the law but you've bought and paid for an alternative. Use it !

  4. Love nice watches, the craftsmanship and the mystique around some brands but it has got very blingy and marketing hyped over the last 10 / years. Bit like the premier league

A chunky masculine stylish watch is one thing but walking around with half a kilo of rapper bad taste on your wrist always seems vulgar to me.

I wonder if slim, delicate and elegant will ever make a comeback or will they for evermore be "my dads" watch territory and see a bit dull for that reason  ?

The trend for shortening names in football.

Ibrahimovic is now known as 'Ibra' apparently.

Atletico Madrid are now 'Atleti' apparently.

    Get a grip!

Ohhh Tony .. I wish you hadn't done that one ... Gets me big time too .. Everything getting shortened and if you know the abbreviation then you are the "in crowd" or sound cool !

A Ferrari is what it's ..not a flipping "Fezza" ...perleaseeeee ( Razza is permissible amongst ourselves of course )

and "Danielle" dumps "Matt" as a headline ... Who ? And would I really care ? even if you were bright enough to print their surname.

its not abbreviation in itself, or having nicknames it's the mass media thing that seeks to popularise things that don't need making popular. ... Off with their heads I say !

  6. The huge scale of the low to medium level drugs trade. Huge because it has to be. Every week there is a story of canabis  farms, heroin dealers  and what have you. Not a single penny of tax is paid. What we see are the few that get caught.  I don't know the extent of seizures of assets and how they get re distributed but I would really like to see a serious crackdown aimed at confiscating assets and putting that money to good use within the locality. Need city Christmas lights ? Need a new park warden, need some more council elderly care provision. There is ample money available to fund these by asset confiscation from those engaged in criminal activity.

Me too . Any ideas ?

always for me it something natural .. A beautiful view or an animal, a sunset or sunrise. There are other things of course.

Remembering the things that inspired a sense of wonder long ago. That sense is still there in all of us but we don't tap into it because life becomes so routine and survival based rather than experience based as it was when you were younger .. Bit random as an answer but going to bed now. ... Night all sweet dreams

Isn't the pointlessness of life one of its charms? I mean football is pointless really if we are honest. The more pointless things I can fill my life with , the better .

I am a bit like SillyBilly although not as extreme I suspect. .. Do all the sums .. Look at the end of the road .. You can see with perfect clarity where it's all going even with a fair wind. What's the point, hell in a hand cart

Then I remember that Dalai Lama quote .. The purpose of our lives is to be happy, and the one from I can't remember which Rock Star .. Our purpose in life is to mess about and have fun, don't listen to anyone that tells you any different.

I am getting towards the back end of my working life, still a bit to go. Relatively stable but going to do something a bit out of left field ( for me ) .. I used to be worried about change, status, what might be, what I "should" be doing or what I could have done. Now I am looking forward to it and gunning at the prospect .. Not a lot of money but a contribution

i am in awe of you guys that have shared your tribulations .. Keep doing it .. It's healthy. None of us is immune. Mates, even cyber mates are a huge help and want to help. I feel humble moaning about my occasional black dog days and grim pragmatic fatalism.

Pete you are right .. The delightful daftness of excessive footy passion is a perfect example of what we should be doing. Worrying too much about Trump, Putin, pension deficits the knackered boiler and Brexit won't make us happy or enrich the one way journey that is our life. Ball, back of the net, jumping for joy most certainly does. The guy who founded Honda said "The value of your life can be determined by how many times your soul has been strired." .. So for me I want to try ( and I fail often ) to find things that stir my soul.

Maybe it's not a case of cyclist v motorist after all but just another example of how nasty we've all become in society. Just that incidents involving these two parties inexplicably bring out the worst in folk when really we should be giving and taking and getting together to improve relations.

There clearly is a 'them and us' attitude on the roads and it's from both sides.

    Well said Tony

All too true ... Them and us should be restricted to the field of play and opposing fans !

In life we should all try a bit harder to rub along together (sensible head on today and it is the season of goodwill )

Even more annoying is when you kindly point out this transgression they get all defensive and abusive and staggeringly they fail to understand your (perfectly reasonable ) point of view!

I wonder what cyclists think when it's them driving the car and they get idiots cycling three abreast.

Sometimes it's only the one cyclist but instead of hugging the roadside he's halfway across the bleedin' road! How stupid are these people?!!

Fact. Of all the cyclists I have politely commented to during my motoring escapades, I have not yet encountered one who responds in a civil manner. They all gave me abuse and hand gestures. All of them.

Rudest, most selfish people on the planet.

One day I might just get out of my car and give one a serious pasting. For now though I try and chill and just ignore them. They aren't worth the hassle.

Cyclist are like the left wing of politics. A lot of them are decent people with a method of getting from A to B and would like everyone to share it. It might not be all that practical but the intent is good and sound. Then there are the militants who hate everyone who isn't like them and give no quarter regardless of circumstances.

Pawn the tablets to pay for the boiler/dishwasher...

Very sensibly (or not !) and being an upstanding sort of bloke I did as the police advised and took them to the police station ( or "enquiry centre" as they now seem to be called.) .. I now learn that the 100 or so blue tablets are designed to help gentlemen with a problem in the nooky department and were worth a fiver each .. Which as you say would probably cover the boiler repair .. Dang it why am I so proper ! ;)

  12. With all the woe in the world I am almost embarrassed to add things to this moan thread but Inam going to.

All at once moments .. Murphy's law

currently ... Boiler on the blink, new heat exchanger needed and just out of warranty even though it's already had one replacement .. So a war with manufacturers is on the cards. Dishwasher on strike and repair man been twice and can't find problem. New specs collected today but lense is wonky even though it seemed OK when fitted. Wife all fretful because we found a rucksack in the back garden full of pilfered tablets. And this is a week after the dog lost her collar and then we found it in the garden sliced through

none of these are that serious or life threatening but bloomin eck we need to beat forest to reset the safety valve

Really slow, attritional, safety-first play in cricket and snooker.

    Alan Partridge goes freganing.

When one of your favourite songs is played on the radio.

Making oblique references to TV/music/films in conversation and the person you are with getting it.

When the air vents in your car all line up together perfectly.

Sometimes, mostly around this time of year when the sun is rising or setting and the sky looks like this:

    o-AUTUMN-WEATHER-SEPT-3RD-facebook.jpg

But the attritional cricket has to be against top oposition .. I still remember the series against the Aussies in the 70's when Lillie and Thompson we blasting holes through everyone and along came David Steele who looked like a manager from Curries, played a straight bat and kept them out and took the edge off them. Some great tense matches.

  14. Customer service lines belonging to major companies that cost you money to call them.

The basic outline being  ....We aren't doing a good job relative to something we promised to do for an agreed sum.

So to resolve this, you need to pay us to sort it and that payment is open ended while we keep you on hold.

And the PS to this is companies that strive to keep themselves distant from their customers via FAQ's / no reply emails / incomplete contact info.

The aim is a "no people" interaction service which forgets completely that customers are people. Sad
