  1. I also have another omega . Manual winding 18ct . Was a grandfathers .. It has a horrible strap on because it is 19mm and hard to find alternatives . I got it serviced once and the Jeweller said the movement won an award in 1957 but I really have no idea what it is. I'd wear it more often if I could find a strap ! .. 18 are too small and 20's won't quite squeeze in so it is gathering dust

what at is your favourite of your own collection ?

  2. Thanks Cisse I will :-) .. the condition is good ..I suppose not unworn and mint as perhaps a specialist collector might like but it was my fathers dress watch and has been lightly and infrequently used. the strap is a little worn as you might expect but the original buckle and box are all there.

My feeling is that many of these things are fashion driven and while the beautiful elegant slim watches of the 60's and early 70's have a unique charm I have a sense that for many they don't make a statement in quite the same way that say a vintage rectangular PF would. Add in that it is skeletal and difficult to read and it becomes a piece of sophisticated jewellery that doesn't appeal to a wide market. I think it is a collectors piece for a watch enthusiast who wants one for technical and historic interest. Wealthy people like this are not as numerous as Russians and Arabs who are providing a lot of the money for the high end watch business.

I have no doubt that the guys in Burlington Arcade were playing it cool but on the other hand they didn't stop me walking out. When I first got it I found reference to one sold at auction in America about 10 years ago but even that was only 4/5,000 dollars. My gut feeling is that it will be another 20 years before it comes good and the fashion cycle moves again.

  3. In drawer next to bed no dobermans I know it's rare and have had it serviced by a horologist but it isn't fashionable at the moment. I went to a shop in Burlington Arcade .. They were somewhat underwhelmed and suggested I might get £ 1,000 if I was patient and lucky. The market seems to be rectangular Patel Phillips or evermore blingy jumbo watches

At that level I shall keep it and wear it every so often. I have tried to post photos via iPad but it doesn't seem to want to play.

  4. That's a real classic. Elegant and understated. This watch phenomena is quite remarkable. I love proper watches, admire the craftsmanship, the individuality even the legend. You just have to say "Jaeger La Coultre" and it feels good !  but recently it has become a bit like the premier league. Hyped up and overpriced. Yes I can see 2,000 - 5,000 for a hand made time piece maybe a little more for something with special complications or materials but when The "brand" value exceeds the craftsmanship or aesthetics by a certain level I lose interest. Limited edition, special coatings and a load bling and you double the price. Naaaa just a way of getting money from rich people. Creating a market but it loses integrity along the way. Like the original polo shirt by Lacoste .. 5 dollar shirt with 20 dollar alligator.
