Maybe a controversial one, but has Warne been backed by Clowes? He still seems to be shopping in the free transfer market and with a relatively small squad. I'm wondering if any of his summer targets that may have been slightly better than those he brought in carried a 'small' fee (£100-300k) and there wasn't money available? I know it seems Knights money balanced whatever books to whatever creditors, but I can't help but go back to Clowes interview pre-season saying money was available. In this division we have the biggest season ticket sales, the biggest match day income, decent cup runs last season, released some high wages, did some sales. Are we still that skint?
Coupled with some pretty unexpected injuries to key players surely he should be given more time considering he hasn't spent a penny in transfer fees.

I do agree with much of this but not all.
Logically by describing an "orthodox" "proper 10" needed to complement Bird who doesn't have the associated qualities of one, it follows that Bird himself would not be a no.10, so he must be something else. (By weird analogy it is like making a cake where the recipe calls for sultanas but you don't have enough, so you say "We can use these raisins as extra sultanas, since the sultanas we already have will give it the right flavour" - all true but it doesn't make the raisins into sultanas; only the sultanas are sultanas!)
It's obviously your opinion that "you can't have 2 non specialists there". Personally I think you're right that having 2 players who haven't played the position (enough) is a risky measure and I wouldn't have NML there. Does specialism = experience? Or specific skills? Both/neither? More than this? If it's a matter of experience, how does one get experience? Or are we saying (particularly with NML) you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Could Bird really not learn the role (or the bits not already automatic to him) and weren't there signs in pre-season he was doing OK there? Has Sibley got the requisite experience to be considered a proper no.10?
You might be right that 2 contrasting forwards is the way to go (maybe we'd have seen that already if Washington had been fully fit). I'm also open to the idea that putting a skilled and experienced no.10 in place of NML would help things too. I'm just not sure any of it makes Bird into a genuine no.10!
Bird is never, ever a 10. For me he's a bog standard central midfielder. Plays best in a 4-4-2 as one of the centre mids.

Unfortunately, first time for decades I've not made it to PP for the opener, but great from us as usual. Sounded rubbish.
Wonder where Middlesbroughs extra 10,000 have been for last 15 years. Upsurge since Carrick. Nevertheless, a good effort from them.

Get Smith and Waghorn signed and we’ve got four forwards who have all scored double figures at some stage either in the championship or League One.
Really can’t see the issues with this. I couldn’t care if they were all 39 and only had one season left in them, if it gets us promoted then Warne has done what he was tasked to do this year.
Couldn't agree more.
Not sure who this 20+ goal, 24 year old, free/low fee, league one proven striker is people keep whining about.
With Smith and Waggy we'd have 4 decent strikers at this level. Happy Days. Let's get cracking!

Why, are you paying?

Agree, the circle s**** to suit Adidas is horrendous with the tiny weeny ram in the middle. Has to be standalone.

Ben Radcliffe is a developing player, was in our academy till about 13, and switched to Burton. Slowish starter, but getting better as he matures and filling out a bit. Prefers CDM.

How good is that kit! blue checked tops, white shorts and socks. Dreamy lol.

I’m curious to see who is prepared to come to Derby for next season.
Will Paul Warne convince decent players he is building something special? Can he convince them that 30,000 are going to turn up every week again for the dross offered in League One?
Are Derby seen as a club living on past glories but with a soft underbelly?
Not my views but certainly a perspective that could be held.
The club needs an overhaul. We have built up our young players but in truth they haven’t shone in the third tier. Cashin shows promise. Bird, Knight and certainly Sibley have been pretty average (and I’m a big Knight fan).
We need to build a team robust (and fit) enough for the physical challenge yet with the attacking prowess to survive in the league above. We know Warne can get teams promoted, but can he build something sustainable?
Another chapter begins. I hope I’m still young enough to enjoy the success when it comes 😊
They'll come because we can pay up to a cap of £12k a week. It's huge for league 1.

Another rebuild.
Wouldn't be against getting Hourihane off the wage bill and go for Cameron Branningan.
Better wide players, more attacking options, younger defence to partner Cashin...
Keep Wildsmith, Cashin, Forsyth, Mcgoldrick..
The rest I wouldn't be arsed about leaving.
Couldn't agree more. Get some cash in, even if we can't spend it till the season after this. Clear the decks. We need a squad without the baggage of the last few years.

This should be the pre-match entertainment before every game. Poor Rammie and Ewie lol.
16 hours ago, MackworthRamIsGod said:Because had we been relegated next year we have to rebuild again. And relegation would have been fairly likely given the fact we couldn't spend a penny and currently have a team that has struggled to compete in the top 6 of league 1.
And, if say Leeds, Forest, Southampton, everton or Leicester come down, how are they comparable to league 1 football clubs?
Next year most likely would have been very painful.
Book mark what I've said and come back in a year and let's see where we are. If we manage to achieve promotion next season after winning league 1, you would then think missing out this season weren't that bad after all.
You go up when you can. We could have competed next season at championship level. Never going to be top 8-10, but we would be competitive. You saying we we wouldn't be as strong as Rotherham, QPR, Hull, Brum, Cardiff, Huddersfield...

Got to do anything to keep knight, cashin and Sibley! Bird should be kept but i wouldn't be upset to lose him as hes not offering anything to our team at the minute, hes too light weight for league 1
I'd flog all of them bar Bird for decent money.

Fans liked them because they gave it their all, and were no doubt good characters. They bring the same mentality into their management roles, but they have the same limitations they had as footballers. I think it unlikely that they have the wherewithal to succeed at Championship level, nor be able to offer any significant technical insight into player development via the Academy structure.
That logic rarely holds weight. The best players don't make good managers. Some of the best had very modest playing careers. Venga played amateur in France, Mourinho div 3 in Portugal, the last English manager to win the prem Howard Wilkinson was at Boston for most of his playing career.

One random season in the 1800s aside, we’ve only ever had two stints of navy shorts; during the first spell we won two league titles, and in the second we won the second division and finished 5th in the top flight.
Switching back to black shorts in 1978 we were relegated in 1980. Switched to black again in 1989 and we were relegated in 1991.
I’m telling you, forget the gypsy curse, it’s the f****** black shorts! They’re a proper Jonah! ?
Nope. Navy mate, through to 89. Never flipped and flopped.

You can’t just offer the cap to get it sorted. If the cap stretches our budget, it has to be on somebody who is going to be playing regularly and one of the best in their position.
Is Curtis Davies even going to be a starter if he stays in?
He’s a great guy but his wages were ridiculously high for what was really one season at top Championship level. After that he became either a bit-part player or an emergency CB yet he was still commanding top Championship wages,
Ehgh? He played every game. Best season. Course he'll start.

I personally think if his exclusivity ends CK will walk away.
It's the opposite. Next in line will be lower else they would have been 1st preffred bidder.

I don’t understand what is in it for Chris Kirchner to attempt to buy the club if he doesn’t have the funds. Why go through all this? If he has funds tied up and can’t budge then that’s another matter.
agree, isnt cheap all them solicitors etc working on the deals. seems bonkers to get this far if he hasnt got the cash at the end of the process. Makes him look a chump and hes chucked £?m down the swanny. Madness.

Used to play cricket with Roundy and Davo when they were just breaking into the Derby first team, never in a million years I'd I've thought he'd get to the heights he has- just seemed too laid back, but it was a long time ago😄. Fair play to him as he was a sound lad back then, as was Davo. He's had a great career and long may it continue.
