Agreed, however sometimes it won't always work like that. I used Pep as an example on purpose, he brought Phillips in but admitted defeat in being unable to adapt to what he wants. He has brought Grealish in and took a season for him to adapt.

Point I was trying to make is that looking at his signings and saying it's scattergun is just lazy argument and not looking at the bigger picture. I'm also not saying he has got it right, because on some it's clear he hasn't.

I take it that paddle is not very popular in England, with someone who works in and possibly lives near Stoke having to go to Derby to get a game? I have probably 100 courts within a 20 mile radius, and that's probably guessing on the low side. I've played a few times, but I don't really like tennis and don't enjoy it as much as squash.
Anyway, this Dwight Gayle fella, is he any good and are we going to sign him? What do our main stalkers think?

I can't help thinking that if it had been the opposite and Bird had signed a new contract and Cashin been sold and loaned back, then the reaction of a very vocal few would have been very different.
I admit, I find it a strange operation all round considering Bristol apparently have been trying for a while to get the signing done. Surely it could have been moved on quickly, giving us a chance to sign a striker? With the deal that we have come to it is obvious that Bristol really wanted to sign Bird now rather than wait until the summer, or they could have just waited and if needs be increased his wages to get him to sign.
Anyway, thanks Max for all you've given to the club. Thanks for sticking with us when others took what looked like the easy way out. Now show the idiot element what you feel for this club and help us get promotion.

I agree with your first paragraph, but only when you're in the position Pep is in should your second paragraph apply. As I have quoted many times - King Arthur Cox, "I was looking for Ted McMinn's replacement 5 minutes after he signed for me"*
You should ALWAYS be looking to buy better than what you already have. What you have then becomes your reserve player (yes, I know, you also need to keep those now reserve players happy).

I did laugh at "don't bring in players to replace your better ones, no point" when we finished 7th last season and 3 of most used 11 moved on in the summer.

Rioch was phenomenal for us in his first stint. Just checked his record and he scored 34 goals in 104 games as a midfielder. Most of those goals were worldies. Top player, skillfull, hardworking and as hard as nails. He'd put a crunching tackle in then stroll away with the ball majestically.
Him and Archie in midfield with Zak and Charlie up front........can I sue DCFC for making me believe it would always be like that?
