  1. So I just very nearly moved employers for the first time in many years and still wondering if I made the right decision, the new place have been a pay increase to $130k with a 10% bonus per year. I'm currently on $100k and my current employer just offered me this -

$115k, $20k bonus to stay, ability to fly home to the UK and work odd weeks here and there and a promotion in the next year.

This company has been good to me for years so I stayed. Also got 31 days holiday this year compared to the 10 I would have got at the new place. I think whatever decision I made would have been the wrong one but hey ho no point in worrying about it now

  2. ChatGPT is a waste of time -

come up with an english football chant about derby county

"We are the pride of Derby, With colors that shine so bright. Our love for our County will never die, We'll fight till the end with all our might.

We'll sing and we'll shout, For our boys in red and white. With every step and every leap, We'll show the world our might.

From the hills of Pride Park, We'll send our voices high. With passion in our hearts, Derby County, we'll never die!

So come on you Rams, Let's make some noise tonight. We are the pride of Derby, And we'll always stand up for what's right!"

Things are going to be tough. The first things to go will be subscriptions to Netflix, Amazon, Sky etc. When it comes to a choice between having the heating on or watching subscription channels then its game over.

Expect many more offers over the next few months.

5 quid for a month of entertainment isn't too shabby. It's only a fiver.

And what employment and social benefits do those employees enjoy?

I ask because I'm often startled at how little some US professions are paid considering their employment benefits are minimal. I've also seen situations where people turn murderous or suicidal when faced with redundancy in the US because they're about to lose their family health insurance cover?

Honestly, the benefits are quite good for a company in the US -

    Holidays:

9 bank holidays + 16 days when starting. Plus +1 day for every year you’ve worked with the company. These days are also used for sick days.

    Health insurance:

$75 per month. $25 to see a doctor and $50 to see a specialist. If anything serious happens and you need anything more outside of office visits then you pay the entire amount up to $750. When you hit $750 you pay 20% of everything until you hit $2.5k. Then everything is free. (I had a heart procedure done last year and it cost my insurance $140k!)

    $1500 free dental insurance.

$175 for glasses or contacts each year with a free eye test.

  5. Problem in the UK has always been salaries, people just don't earn enough unless you're in London.

The country needs to decide if it's a high tax high benefit economy like Europe or a low tax, low benefit country like the US. Problem is we're a bit of both and that results in low salaries and the problems we're seeing now.

To give you an idea on salaries, I frequently hire new university leavers in the US for IT support work and they're on $50-55k minimum starting. All this is in a relatively low cost of living states (Indiana, Ohio & Tennessee).... When I left university in UK (Although just under 15 years ago) and I earned just 17k GBP.

UK Salaries are a joke and need to change.

I'm currently paying 12.981c/kWh according to my company so my state should be on that (Tennessee)

Jeez, which state are you in?

I was paying about $250 per month averaged over the year in Florida before we moved back in October 2020.

Prior to that when we rented a bigger house with a pool it regularly hit $500 per month.

Mind you. Florida is effectively a monopoly (at least Central Florida) as we only had one supplier available to us.

    Do you have AC?

I'm in Tennessee, I'm also in a one bed apartment but AC runs all the time i'm in the apartment at about 20C.

In winter it doesn't get cold enough for me to put the heat on so it'll be even cheaper then too.
