We should be rotating wingers regularly.  Start 2 of them, let them run themselves into the ground for 60 minutes, then throw 2 others on for 30 minutes against tired legs.  Then next game, swap them round.  Keep everyone fresh over the season, not play NML for 90 minutes every single week so he’s dead on his feet by Christmas.

You’re really including Rosenior in a list of managers who failed to win promotion? In his 10 games in charge?  Even Rooney is debatable given we were effectively coasting into admin at that point and the squad was falling apart.
Anyway, by that logic, we’ve failed to win promotion 3 times playing direct football, under Rowett, Pearson and Warne, shall we make it 4?

Warne's version of 'ready' is different to others'. What Warne says is correct... They aren't ready to be first team regulars. However, he completely gametimethe very important developmental requirement of giving them first team experience. Firstly, experience in our first team informs other clubs the player is ready for first team football lower down in the pyramid, opening doors for loans. Secondly, it's the only opportunity to see if they are actually ready for the first team or not. Thirdly, it motivates them yo push harder for a more regular role in the first team.
Springett wasn't even at upper L1 level when he joined us last season, but he was still given gametime in the PL with Norwich before his loan. You could argue it was those few first team games which led to us wanting him on loan.
Robinson was given minutes in the Championship, yet hasn't set foot on the pitch in L1.
Thompson played a significant amount of football in a Championship side which would have finished 17th in the Championship if not for points deducted. He was limited to just 190 minutes in League 1 last season.

My opinion of Rosenior at the time was that it was a mistake to get rid of him. I wanted him to be given until Christmas to turn around the away form, and if he hadn't, then look at bringing in someone more experienced. Looking back and thinking about it, I'm pretty sure Rosenior would have steered us into the playoffs in the end. He built that squad to build his brand of football and we would have had more in the tank energy-wise than under Warne. Unlike Warne, Rosenior's recruitment here and at Hull has been exemplary, so I'm sure we'd have gotten in reinforcements in January as well. In the playoffs, who knows what would have happened, but it would have been very sweet to see us get promoted under him.
I felt at the time bringing in Warne was an error and remains so. Not because he won't get us out of the division (i think he will next season) but because i have absolutely no faith in him doing anything except relegate us in the championship. I wanted us to invest in a coach who could be part of a longer-term project to guide us not just out of this league but the next one as well. I hope I turn out to be wrong as I was ultimately with Rooney who I spent months lambasting before he became our talisman.

duncanjwitham got a reaction from IlsonDerby in Warne: what would it take?
More than anything, I want to see a manager making good decisions.  I want him to have a clear idea of how he wants the team to play, and go about making that happen.  I want players being given jobs to do that they are capable of doing.  I want to see signs that the manager understands what is happening on the pitch and that he makes decisions that affect it.  I want to see signs that the manager knows what players are good and bad at, and he sets out to maximise the first and minimise the last. And so on and so on.
I think if you are doing all of that stuff reasonably well, then performances will follow.  And if you are putting in good performances, then results will follow that. If you are purely chasing "he needs to win X of the next Y games" or "be in Nth place by Christmas", then it's all just built on sand.  Results like Saturday are going to do nothing to sway my thinking, because I have no faith that we will be able to repeat it on a consistent basis.

I do wonder how much Graham Richards has coloured our opinions of how good local radio presenters actually are.  I grew up with Richards as effectively the voice of Derby County, and obviously no commentator since has really measured up.  But I think that’s a sign of how genuinely oddball and great he was, rather than a judgement on everyone else.  Local radio guys are local radio guys, and at best they’re learning their craft before they get promoted to national BBC or wherever and that’s fine.  Ed, and Dom, and Chris, and Owen, and Ross and whoever else we’ve had are all basically fine, they maybe weren’t the best commentators while they were at Radio Derby but they certainly weren’t the worst, and I have no doubt that they were all decent people who were doing their best, and they certainly don’t deserve some of the crap that gets sent their way.  The majority of them that have left seem to have gone on to bigger and better things, and I think that’s a sign that Radio Derby are getting something right somewhere, so best of luck to the next lot.

The thing is, if you get a bunch of balls to him in the box, he'll stick enough of them away to justify his position in the team (as he did in the first half, by the sounds of it).  If you ask him to do anything else, the rest of his game (work-rate etc aside) is pretty dire.   We don't do anywhere near enough of the first thing, and do loads of the second.
