Derby County boss Nigel Clough is in talks with Preston's Scottish midfielder Paul Coutts after agreeing a bargain £150,000 fee.

Clough hopes to talk Coutts into joining the Rams, but the player may have to take a pay cut as he is on a bigger deal at North End than Derby want to pay. - http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/derby-county-boss-nigel-clough-1142359

I really want Hendrick to be a gem and admittedly he was brought into a less than brilliant team last year but I think he's been bigged up massively by Clough. I just don't see what type of player he is going to be, he's not box to box, he's not a combative defensive mid...he likes to sit and play simple sideways passes. Maybe its the team around him making me doubt his ability?

I see Hendrick as a Gareth Barry-type player. He'll just sit in the middle of the park and make easy passes, keeping the game moving so to speak. Not to take anything away from him though, he'll play in the Prem one day.

Also, I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I did a bit of research and found out why his "bad attitude" got him stripped of the captaincy.

Doubts over Coutts' future came to Westley's attention on the eve of his first game in charge against Leyton Orient: "I shouldn't have been having a conversation with him on a Friday night about whether or not he was going to put in a transfer request.

"I've sent him away and told him to get his head together.

"I've said to him 'when you come back into my office I want you to be able to tell me you can play whole-heartedly for this football club, but until you do that, I don't want you around this football club'."

Seems like he just requested a transfer at a completely inappropriate time. Can't see it being too much to worry about.

Colin Bloomfield just tweeted that we should be signing him today

It looks like Derby will complete the signing of Paul Coutts from PNE today. Can play centre-mid or wide right. 23. Ex PNE skipper.

Glick said our priority positions were striker, centre back and cover at left back. Coutts is a midfielder. I bet if we sign Coutts we don't get one of the other three. We've already been told how good our current centre backs are and how Ward is an option up front!

Within our extremely limited boundaries of scouting (ie uk-based, cheap, lower leagues) sounds like a decent enough signing.

And don't worry Andy, if he plays centre mid or wide right, he'll be perfect for 'filling in' in defence, so two birds, one stone!

Clough wants to sign a central defender, a midfielder and a striker ahead of the new season.

He is also keen to bring in cover for Gareth Roberts at left-back.

Let's hope we can bank on Coutts. However, it would be nice to occasionally find a midfield player who knows where the net is. After leaving the mighty Cove Rangers it doesn't seem he was exactly prolific. Matched with Hendrick and Bryson this means we will have a large dependency on the forwards to score our goals.

PAUL Coutts will become Derby County's second signing of the summer today.

The 23-year-old Preston North End midfielder held talks with the Rams yesterday and was shown around the Moor Farm training ground.

He completed his medical last night and will put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

The fee is undisclosed but is believed to be in the region of £150,000.

Coutts had a year to run on his contract at Preston, where he was captain for a spell last season.

He is one of eight players to have been made available for transfer by the Deepdale club

Derby have already signed 20-year-old Michael Jacobs from Northampton Town, who can play on the left or right of midfield.

Although Coutts joined Preston as a central midfielder, his bestperformances for the club have come on the right side.

The Rams see the former Scotland Under-21 international as a replacement for Paul Green, who filled the position in the second half of last season.

Green turned down Derby's offer of a new contract and has joined Leeds United as a free agent.

Coutts had also attracted interest from Hull City and his former club Peterborough United this summer.

He turned down a move back to Peterborough last month.

Last season, he made 46 appearances for Preston and scored two goals.

He was handed the captain's armband in December by the management duo of Graham Alexander and David Unsworth, who had been put in temporary charge after Phil Brown was sacked.

New manager Graham Westley stripped Coutts of the captaincy in February, although the player was skipper in the final two games of the season.
