Nigel is sure taking his time reCoutting new talent this year. Maybe he's waiting for the likes of Bailey & S.Davies to S-Coutt along to make room. I would be APaulled if we didn't sign a central defender as well. At least this guy looks a Coutt above the rest.

It's apauling.

*Cough* ... Copycat.

He's not a player who's going to improve us, but as a back up player I think he could do a job. Didn't see him play last season but saw quite a bit of him in the season PNE were relegated. He was one of the better players, but in a very poor midfield. He isn't in Westley's plans and I don't think North End fans will be sad to see him go. He hasn't set the world alight there. It's a typical Clough signing, but I think he can do a job acting as cover for the midfield. He'll be cheap as well.

Typical Clough 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

But seriously, don't we need players who can improve our first team? Not take the place of other 'squad players'?

Totally agree mate, he'll want less money than Bailley. But he's not as good as Bailley. With the limited money Clough's been given, Coutts is the type of player he has to get unfortunately.

Why would he be on less than Bailey? Bailey had only ever played for Crewe in league 1 where as Coutts has played in the champ for two clubs

I think that's the main reason for Bailey going. He proved that he was capeable of playing at this level so wanted a wage rise. But we've refused him that (unlike Brayford). So we're cashing in on Bailey and bringing in somebody cheap again.

How about this?

Selling Bailey for 400k and bringing in this fella at 150k likely means his wages are close to being paid for by the excess 250k from Baileys fee?

Maybe this lad is going on the right, Jacobs on the left? they might think he's abetter option that Ben Davies for certain games so he's now cover for two roles and it's cost us nowt in salaries, James Bailey going pays this lads wages for a year and we have a free gamble at finding someone better than we've got now.

I know it's a massive extreme case but Tottenham had a first team squad of 52 players... feck me, they can only name 25 of them,

that's at least 27 players paid likely an average of 20 grand a wekk. Not to kick a ball....football has to get real, it can't sustain players who contribute nothing.

If they dont think Bailey is going to shift Bryson or Hendrick and he's very much a one postion player, central midfield only. Then in my mind it's sensible to cash in, get someone cheaper (fee only) who can cover one of the other positions as well and if it turns out he's better than Davies B, we're in better shape all round.

These are the types of wheeling and dealing transfer we will have to make if we haven't got money to chuck around.

But we'll get next to nothing for Bailey with one year left on his deal. If Bailey is on more than Coutts (which i doubt) all we're doing is spreading the cost over a longer period for the same product. Is it worth it for the unrest, bedding in, etc that goes along with a new signing? Or is this just a marketing ploy to say 'look we've brought in someone' 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Bailey is under 23 so we will get a fee for him at the end of contract anyway.

Could well be a marketing ploy. As PBW said, it's the type of thing we're likely to see happening quite often now given the lack of funds available.

Derby County are looking to strengthen their midfield with the signing of former Preston captain Paul Coutts,BBC Radio Derby reports.

The Rams have spoken to North End about the 23-year-old Scot, who was notified by a text message from manager Graham Westley that he was not wanted at Deepdale for pre-season training.

Coutts joined from Peterborough in 2010 and played 46 games last season.

But he was stripped of the captaincy by Westley in February.

After listening to Westley in this interview, Coutts seems to go against everything Clough stands for. Jake Buxton (the epitome of a Clough player) was asked yesterday how things have changed in his time and he said players like Commons, Hulse, Albrechtsen didn't want to play for the badge. Seems like Coutts has an attitude problem, but then again maybe Bailey does as well.
