I made this point on the matchday thread yesterday:

Remember the '86 world cup. It was only after injuries to 'key' players, that Bobby Robson started picking the right team.

Going to 4-4-2 wasn't a decision by Warne, it's been forced on him by injuries. Let's hope he sees the benefit.

Ray Wilkins I believe...booking maybe that kept him out, Or a nasty crab sandwich ?

Despite the avoidable nature of both Bristol goals, it was a pretty strong defensive performance for a team that had a DM at RB, an LSCB at RSCB, a LB at LSCB, a LSCB at LB, and two non-tackling playmakers in midfield.

The defence coach at least deserves credit for making that work against the form team of the division.

All about systems and organization.

I simply don’t believe we have the players to play Warnes  preferred 3-5-2 at the moment .

Maybe he could go back to it when injuries have cleared and he has filled a few gaps in January.

The 4-2-3-1 worked well against Bristol as it allows players to be more creative going forward .

Smith  and Roberts did well in the 4  and Forsyth and Cash looked comfortable.

Might need to adapt the system to 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 ie extra midfielder for Tuesday though .

Well done Saturday to Players and Management team

I still believe it was the case. When you are told to play a certain way and you recruit the players to play that way its very hard to change overnight.

A hangover. Good to see Saturday though.

Maybe so. But then on Saturday weren't we playing more like Rosenior would have set us up? #notrocketscience

No. Look who scored the goals.

We had an attacking threat of Dobbin & ML on the wings and 2 up top. Who would have thought it that if you play 2 strikers they score goals at this level. One that scored a hat trick. #notrocketscience

Collins has 4 goals in 3 games under Warne. Highly effective for sure. Play to the players strengths and we'll reap rewards.

It does also help that McGoldrick's fitness has improved. Of course he wasn't scoring goals earlier in the season, he was barely fit enough to play 20 minutes!

He was always likely to have an impact when fit though , there were early signs of it first half against Plymouth when he chased down a defender and layed it on a plate for Collins to open his account.

In addition, we've recently been playing against teams with worse defensive records then those we faced early season.

With 4 of our next 6 league games being against Morecambe, MK Dons, Burton & Forest Green I'm expecting a lot more goals for us, but the real test will be getting something from Sheff Weds & Portsmouth.

Wilkins got sent off in our drab 0-0 2nd group game vs Morocco. Which followed a drab 0-1 defeat vs Portugal (who were very poor back then).

Bryan Robson was played after a dislocated shoulder wearing a weird harness type thing which was a stupid idea as he aggravated it and so he was out.

With our entire 1st choice midfield gone and Mark hateley woefully out of form at cf, Robson brought youth into the side with pace.

We played quite well for a couple of games then panicked v Argentina and tried to play a containing game which utterly failed.
