Squads for next season (with the view to getting all players used to 3 at the back)? Not necessity what I would do, but what I thin we'll do.

WB :  Oduroh, Brailsford, Moloney, Burton
CM :  Bates, DRobinson, Ibrahim, Hawkins, Sebagabo, Fapetu
W :  Kelly, Richards, Davidson*
CF : Nunn, Oseni, DBrown*, Wheeldon*

* = still scholars
Possible outs :  Foulkes, CDixon, Aghatise, Lo-Everton, Cybulski, Taylor-Hart, Vigar

I think Roberts Solomon WGP Aideyan Brailsford Sebagado Kelly Ibrahim will also all be released as at the end of their contracts along with all the others you named.

Robinson will potentially move into a more first team role and Evans will go out on loan.

The u21 budget will be cut to the bone I think to fund first team as much as possible so it will be a young team made up of the better u18s and the ones retained from this year.

I think it will look like

GK: Club No. 2 (Thompson on Bench)

                        Bardell Moore Cox

   Oduroh.                                          Moloney

                 Bates.  Hawkins Fapetu

                       Oseni or Nunn

                                         Brown

Subs made up from u18s

It will be another hard season at u21 level but will give the lads playing a lot of experience and things to learn.

I think quite rightly the priority will be the first team and the academy picks up the scraps next year. The above would be competitive in PL2 but there is no depth to it.

I think realistically that’s the team with maybe 1/2 released from Prem Academies with u18s making up the bench.

Roberts - With first team backup being in the first team squad most weeks, I can see the club keeping Roberts for an extra year to provide cover for the U21s. Especially since I expect Foulkes to leave and it would be in the best interests of Evans' development to go out on loan. Isn't he also a 1st year pro, with most youngsters typically getting 2 year deals?

Brailsford, Ibrahim, and Kelly - aren't they also 1st year pros, so likely to have 1 more year with us? They were three of our most used U21s this season too, so it's not as if they're out of favour. I suppose Ibrahim is most at risk due to not pushing on since he first joined us and depth at CM.

Aideyan - Currently 2nd year scholars, so I would expect him to be given a pro deal, even if for only 1 season due to our limited squad depth.

Sebagabo - Similar to Aideyan with being a 2nd year scholar. Competition at CM is tough though and he hasn't pushed on much since stepping up to the U18s, but has struggled with injuries.

Solomon and WGP - I would also include Bardell in this group based on age. Tough one due to promising youngsters coming through, but at the same time we still need to have a squad. We also don't want to repeat the last couple of seasons of struggles, so a bit of 'experience' could be useful at guiding some of the youngsters. Injuries to Bardell and Solomon over the past 2 seasons have held them back, whilst WGP would also be cover at LWB. Probably comes down to budget and/or if they think they are ready to go play men's football elsewhere.

Bit of hearsay so might be wrong, but I've heard that the academy have had loads of ex Prem academy trialists in at all age groups. Then for the impressive ones when contracts/scholarships are discussed, they demand first team level money so conversations die very quickly.

Sure things haven't worked out for Nunn or Lo-Everton but for the likes of Ebiowei or Plange, big rewards.

I may be wrong but I think the average first year pros at Derby get a one year deal with the club having the option of a further year.

I think its’s only the outstanding prospects that get a first pro contract for longer than one year.

But I may be wrong.

Evans has a 3 year deal with 2 years left now. He is really well rated and with the interest generated in him the club obviously wanted protection.  He needs another loan and I heard nearly went out at the end of the season but due to being a pro missed the window. Foulkes will go I think due to age and Roberts just doesn’t seem in favour coupled with 2 not very successful loans. Thompson may be ready in a couple of months but needs to adjust to being a full time footballer and the u18s before he makes the step up so can only see a back up GL used.

Brailsford and Kelly were 3rd year scholars and I don’t think offer more than Odurih and Moloney so wouldn’t get a year at pro now. Ibrahim hasn’t impressed I don’t think this year so maybe look to release again to free up some funds. I think WGP is another one who just doesn’t have a path to the first team.

Aideyan and Sebagado are both players who are very good on their day but have both been beset with injuries during their scholarships so would budget be risked?

@Stuniverse yes I believe typical is 1 and an option.

I think we see potentially some released players coming in and maybe a loan or two like Haigh and the Arsenal lads this year.

I think that's a fair summary, with it mostly coming down to who we sign specifically for the U21s.

I'd be interested to know how the Academy budget fits in now with the club's business plan that the EFL will be monitoring i.e does it reduce what's available for the first team squad or is it separate.

The academy will have a separate cost attached as part of the plan and within that the u21 squad has a wage budget. If more than that budget is required for u21 players then it has to come out of somewhere else  I.e. the first team wage budget. That’s why I think the u21s will be predominantly existing contracts and u18s to free up as much money as possible for the first team.

The under 21s are decimated, as we knew they would be.

I'd have liked to keep Kido Taylor-Hart, but we might not be able to afford him.

I'm also pleased Carlos Richards has been offered new terms.

Not really too surprised by any other names on that list.

Strange how things work out.

A few years back I thought Connor Dixon would make the breakthrough, just for his sheer attitude, and heard a podcast where a specialist scout thought Sebagabo would turn out to be the best player we'd ever bought through.

Good luck to all those young lads released, hope they can stay in the game somewhere.

Bloody hell. There’s a huge rebuild needed.

Anyone who’s watched more than I have report on any surprises there?

There’s some names I’m slightly surprised at but I have to say I haven’t watched them play for a while.
