MoodHoovers Miekle Moments

The latest Meikle bulletin.....

He's still a handsome boy....

He's still having physiotherapy and a behavioural therapist.

There are a few theories. The most plausible is that he is in constant pain from his hips and back leg muscles. So every time something makes him nervous he's mouthing.

He was inconsolable the other night with the storm whipping through. Not eunice but the day after.

Today we got back blood and urine test that showed his kidneys are working harder than they should. So more potential issues for him if not now, then in later life.

But he's lovely. He's still growing up and now powering round at 32kg he can skittle over Mrs MoodHoover no problem.

She's let it be known that if the charity don't think he will make it, then we will adopt him. She couldn’t bear for him to be sent to a family that hadn't experienced his issues and who couldn't cope.

He's part of the family really. Here he is listening attentively to one of my legendary pub monologues..... ?

As you can see, the only way to stop him nervously gnawing his way through his leads is to use a chain one...... ?

Thanks for the update. We would have had him if Mrs Moodhoover hadnt stepped up. The peace and mud of Cambridgeshire would suit him to the ground. He looks very snooty or dozey here - not sure which. But he is a beautiful boy. Other people suggest football meet ups - i think you should do a Miekle forum meet and greet!

Evening all. It's a Meikle update!!

He's been through it poor little guy. And both Mrs VdM and I have been on a bit of a rollercoaster.

Meikle has always drunk a lot and wee'd a lot. We mentioned this a few times but had been brushed off by the charity.

Last week our local vet, after some testing, gave us his view that Meikle had chronic kidney disease. Renal dysplasia. Prognosis was life expectancy 200 - 400 days. It's incurable and congenital.

He was 1 last week.

Cue emotional meltdown. But to be fair, he said that the tests weren't 100% conclusive and referred him to a local super specialist vet.

We've just got him back after 48 hours of scanning and testing.

He's got a birth defect called an ectopic ureta. Basically the tube from one of his kidneys into his bladder is defective. He is leaking urine into his bladder which is backing up and has caused one of his kidneys to start failing.

The great news is that it can be fixed with surgery. So negotiations are about to start as to who pays.

His testing cost £3,000 which the charity has funded via its insurance.

Procedure? Don't know. He's not going to make it as an assistance dog so Mrs VdM has put her size 5s down and insisted we adopt him.

But she's insisted that I mustn't be tight. So I won't be. He's part of the family. Even though the whole thing hasn't worked out in terms of delivering a useful functioning assistance dog, I'd like to think we've done a little good.

Here he is sleeping off his anaesthetic.

Thank you for your interest and kind words all. If the mods want to close the thread then understand and appreciate all their help.

Love to all

MoodHoover xx

Oh poor little boy. I'm so glad they found the problem and hope the operation is a success. Glad you are adopting him. I hope the mods dont close this - at least until we know how the operation goes. It is the only thread i have notification of posts on for! Meikle's "journey" is like Derby over the last year and hopefully his operation will see the start of healthier times for him and a happy spoilt life with you both - hopefully like our purchase from admin.

Thank you @CBRammette.. Those are lovely words.

He's had a right old do of it. He might also have hydrocephalus (basically not quite wired right so drinks a lot.... Bit like @Boycie). He might also have had a long standing nagging kidney infection.

No animal or human should be living in pain. Very glad to get a proper diagnosis.

It's sad that ultimately we've failed inasmuch as we were trying to deliver a dog to do great things. But not everything can work out in life. It's certainly given me perspective and some grounding ?

He will still do great things as he'll deliver smiles wherever he goes.

I know... admittedly only from second hand experience... just how life-changing these assistance dogs are/can be.  So first off, it's sad from all angles to see Miekle isn't going to achieve that.

Secondly, whilst I'm no pet lover per sé, I do at least like dogs, and can see the attraction.
And I know from closer (almost first hand!) experience that even "unofficial/amateur assistance dogs" can be a great comfort for those with needs and issues.  I get that.

There's no denying it's a sad update all round, and I dare to suggest that Miekle feels like one of our own now.

Whilst I remain lazy, hard-hearted and insensitive enough to do pretty much nothing about it, I know for a fact that I'm soft and soppy enough to lob a handful of tenners in a pot, if someone had the oomph, desire, and wherewithal to set up a just giving page, to help him see out his days in comfort, for as long as possible.  (I know money isn't the answer, nor the miracle cure, but it might just help a little?)

All the best to the VdM clan, and a massive tummy-rub for Miekle!

Thanks for the update and sad to hear of Miekle's health problems. He's been very unlucky in one way but so lucky to have such a loving and wonderful family who will give him the very best chance to live a long and happy life.

This is how we feel about our very own Freddie Goodcat. We got him from Derby Cats Protection knowing that we would have to probably spend a lot of money to keep his skin allergy under control. He had been at the shelter for 6 months and no one wanted him. We spent a considerable amount ascertaining that he was allergic to two kinds of dust mites and one dry food mite which cannot be eliminated from any house. He has steroids every two days, monthly check ups and £400 a year immunotherapy treatment which may or may not help.

Since his treatment began 6 years ago his coat has been glossy and thick and his skin has been free of sore, bald patches.  We could probably have had 3 or 4 nice holidays with the money, but he is our boy and we love him dearly and we don't regret a single penny. He possibly won't make old bones with the steroids but we have got him down to only half a tablet every other day. Any less than that and the problem quickly comes back. Our problem is that he likes his food and the steroids give him a bigger appetite. However, it he puts on too much weight he is more likely to get diabetes and then his steroids won't work so the vet monitors his weight every month and he is on special food (not that he doesn't enjoy some treats!)

Because of Freddie's problems we absolutely understand where you are coming from and I know Miekle, like Freddie, just could not have found a better home. Fingers tightly crossed that all goes well for your boy. Please keep us updated. Who knows, he may well have a future role as a visitor to the elderly etc as some kind of therapy dog.

I know you had more to this sentence, but I’d like to say that you’ve only failed as a doggy mum or dad if the dog has never been loved and cared for etc. you’re no failure here.

Spot on!

We've all taken Meikle into our hearts and admire the way he has become part of your lives. He is a beautiful and blessed boy to have found such caring parents! Keep this thread going! Please.

Hello all, a little Meikle update. He went in for surgery back on 10th April. Was in hospital a couple of days and then 2 weeks recovery. He's got one and a half functioning kidneys but his uretur has been fixed.

We've been booted out of MoodHoover Mansion for a week whilst Mrs VdM has builders in executing her vision ?

So we've come to Dorset. Today we all puffed up Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast (you can poke your Beachy Head!)

Here's junior with the pooches.... IMG_20220509_153621.thumb.jpg.ca4064afe5c1cbe27d4e881ebbcf5831.jpg
