He's been a bit poorly over the weekend with the runs, but he's back fighting fit.

I'll provide a pic update tomorrow, but the major adjustment has been to put a big parasol over his loo to make sure he still goes in the appropriate place... ?

I was hoping for him to meet @sage this morning, as we met for a quick drink and bacon soft roll, but I was banned from taking him in the sunshine ?

Quite right about keeping him out of the sunshine.

This is Meikles sumptuously extended loo, complete with added shade. As you can see it was already fully air conditioned.

The other innovations are a welcome mat in case his paws get burnt on the hot patio.

And Mrs VdM thoughtfully added an access plank that he doesn't wee on, so I can reach the inner regions more easily.....

All designs patented - here he goes on his way in so it all seems to work well ?

Blimey looks like an Italian holiday home terrace (except poo maybe). I think he may be a little spoilt - but I love it!! Think he needs a water feature to cool down in really though if you could just sort that

He has a paddling pool just off stage left and there's the hose, but he doesn't enjoy water. I gave him a shower and he cried softly the whole way through.... ?

Our Tigz loves a shower with babytalc scented shampoo ?

This weeks news for all the forum Meikle followers is as follows....

- firstly, his growth has evened out and the charity are content for walking exercises to recommence which is good news ? so expect a bit more action in the shots.

- secondly Meikle has been losing his baby teeth. It's been difficult to check progress but over the last day or so, when playing with our dog he's occasionally snarled baring a row of Simon Cowell white gnashers.

I've tried to capture a view here. This is less good news as the nibbling is continuing apace. But....if it calms down then Meikle can come with us on holiday to the jurassic coast in early September, so more photo opportunities.... ?

He looks a bit like Graeme Shinnie in that picture.

No official tooth fairy as you never see their baby teeth come out. I think that they get swallowed or something...

Walkies he likes a lot and always did. His hip joints look a lot sturdier. Unfortunately that means he's much happier to stand on just hind legs so he can reach higher to grab stuff off work surfaces and shelves etc.... ?

  • 2 weeks later...

So this weeks news is Meikles first physiotherapy appointment, where a nice lady drove up from Portsmouth yesterday.

We're not much further forward unfortunately. Her diagnosis was that some unspecified underlying problem with his hips has caused significant muscle and ligament contraction. So she spent an hour hyperextending his back legs which clearly caused him some pain.

He's got to have several weeks of this to loosen everything up and then back to the specialist vet to see whether there is a further underlying condition. If there is, then it's an operation. If it's just that he's grown too quickly and unevenly he won't.

The good news is that the charity are pleased with his temperament and intelligence, so are happy to fund the treatment in the hope that it will all be worthwhile for them.

Here he is looking very pleased with himself. He amused the physio by reaching a, shall we say, @DarkFruitsRam7 level of "excitement" when she arrived.... ?

So a catch up bulletin on Meikle. He was due to be x-rayed for his hips on 23rd August, but ate a mushroom the day before which made him ill so it was put off to the 1st.

The feedback from that is that he is currently suspended from training activities and is being referred on to a specialist vet.

No pavement walking, no training, no taking him on journeys.

He is allowed to amble around the woods where we live so here he is today still looking proud.

We're hopeful for him, but Mrs VdM has already started the scenario testing of "well if he wasn't fit enough to continue, I don't think I'd like to hand him off to people who hadn't lived with his issues".

Fingers crossed cos he has a wonderful temperament.

What a lovely looking lab.Reminds me of my lab called Jet,who I bought out of a litter in our local village,a proper pedigree, everything was right only the breeder didnt have the dog and bitch xrayed for hip dysplacia, which meant my poor Jet developed hd when she was about 8 years old,she found it more and more difficult to walk, and I had to retire her life as a gundog, which she loved and was very good at(I once turned down an offer of 1000 pounds for her and that was in the late 70,s).

I dont think in those days many people were offered an operation, especially in my dogs case as the bone socket holding the hip wouldnt take it.So good luck with your lab, hope everything goes well for your dog.

Regards and best wishes.Malagaram

Reckon they're more intelligent?

Miekle came from a litter in Gloucestershire. Parents were ex assistance dogs owned by the charity.

Essentially a selective breeding programme.

But most of miekles siblings are black, so I assume some connection..

Were the parents xrayed for hip dyspacia. ?

Honestly, I don't know. We're aware that his siblings don't have the same issues and that the parents have "assistance dog lineage" which we assumed meant that they were such dogs (they only serve as assistance dogs for a few years and so can still be bred).

Appreciate your messages of goodwill and memories of your dog. We're still hopeful that he will go on to do great things for someone deserving.

Best, MoodHoover.

Hope he can live a happy life. Anything else is less important.
