MoodHoovers Miekle Moments

The news this week is some concern with the development of Meikles hips and that his cartilege may not be developing.

He is kind of sashaying when he walks by swinging his spine, possibly because his hips are painful. So a vets appointment is imminent with perhaps massage therapy to follow. If it doesn't correct then the little tyke will fail and drop out of the training program and be put up for adoption ie sale.

This has sadly led to him being withdrawn from the charity video shoot next week, the charity thinking that nothing less than 100% physical perfection will do.

We think that it might be a growth spurt. He's physically changing quite quickly. Here's this mornings portrait. I think he's a handsome little guy and we'll do whatever we can to make sure he's OK.

Sad to know what to put really but I'm really hoping things turn out well.

Whoever gets this little guy will have a real gem.

Thinking of you all and glad he is in the best hands.

Keep us all updated!

Thanks Steve and everyone for positive thoughts.

We must of course make sure we do the right thing, which is to give Meikle every chance in the knowledge that he will be doing something amazing for somebody.

Everything else at this stage comes second. Even, if only temporarily, our own dog. But that situation can't be allowed to continue for the good of both animals

I'll carry on updating approximately weekly. ?

Having charged back from belper yesterday for Meikles 5pm vet appointment, it was all a bit inconclusive.

Nothing definitely wrong (hurrah) but apparently some manipulations were a bit painful for him.  So vet reluctant to say definitely no problem. I think they are very nervous about potential liability to the charity....

So some video footage is being sent to a doggy orthopaedic specialist and we're just taking it easy with him and making sure he is only being exercised 10-15 mins a day.

But I reckon he will be fine - he's very content in himself. Play time this morning....

I think that's his issue - he's grown so quickly that some bits just need to catch up!

He's going to be brilliant for someone if we're just a little bit careful now and nurture him through his rapid growth phase.

At heart of course he's still a pup....so clambers on things he shouldn't and will jump down if he's scolded! We are therefore reeducating ourselves to chill, and just lift him down and give him lots of positive reinforcement when he's in the right place ?

Glad you made it and equally glad there's no obvious problem. Fingers crossed it is just growing pains.

Our neighbours dog had huge problems and yelped at similar age when going up and downstairs or slopes which vet said was due to rapid growth. It settled so hope this beauty is the same

Glad he seems to be doing better ?

When I got my now 9 year old as a puppy I was told that for the first year they should only do 5 mins of lead exercise per month of age (twice a day). So 15 mins of lead exercise for Miekle does sound about right. Play is different as they can better choose when they want to stop!

Sunday outing to a local garden centre for "socialisation" training. Nothing whatsoever to do with coffee and a slice of cake. Now I realise why Mrs VdM was keen to volunteer.

We have to take both dogs to be fair. And they do get confused with who is supposed to be confined in what in the car...... ?

They do get on very well.....

  • 2 weeks later...

There's nothing like lifting the spirits after a disappointing result with a puppy update.

Meikle has been eased back on exercise as he's been going through a growth spurt.

But he's looking a bit steadier. A bit less gangly.

This is his new fave thing. Basically a small mat made of highly coloured felt strips on a base. You 3"hide" his lunch in the felt petals and he happily snuffles around for quite a while finding the bits.

Added bonus is he eats slower so doesn't belch in your face after lunch anymore.

The naughty news is that he's learned to bark at all and sundry so that's got to be unlearned.... ?

I wonder if they make human feed mats- can think of a few recipients!

He's been a bit poorly over the weekend with the runs, but he's back fighting fit.

I'll provide a pic update tomorrow, but the major adjustment has been to put a big parasol over his loo to make sure he still goes in the appropriate place... ?

I was hoping for him to meet @sage this morning, as we met for a quick drink and bacon soft roll, but I was banned from taking him in the sunshine ?
