samtheram83
Definition of a Rolls Royce footballer. I loved watching how he would position himself to receive the ball, always a step ahead. Get those badges done George. I’d love to see how that footballing brain can be applied to coaching, particularly at Derby.

I truly believe had he not done that ACL in preseason we would have been promoted, and who knows what could have been? It's a tragedy how his career ended up. He was always going to do that ACL though, so that was a risk we knowingly undertook. The broken leg however, was sheer bad luck. Bad luck he was on the pitch, bad luck he went in for the ball, and bad luck he was connected with by such a poor challenge. Every step afterwards seemed unlucky too. Sith Happens
That day when his leg got broken was awful. I personally never blamed wassall as felt momentum was important but that tackle was horrific. And the ref totally missed it somehow, not that I could have celebrated the red card or penalty that should have been awarded. I just felt sick knowing you were watching something serious going on. I’m one of Thorne’s biggest fans, but I felt both he and Fozzy were really crap that season. Understandably so.

Not sure what he means by this bit . I think he is referring to the fact that we wouldn’t play him as West Brom were due an additional payment for every game he played. plymouthram
Stated at 27 he is taking some time out currently. I know when he went to Oxford that it was only a 12 month deal. I wonder if his love for football will see him go into coaching. Shame is body could'nt do what his football brain knew he should be doing. What ever George does in the future, I wish well. wixman1884
Heartbreaking article but also got goosebumps from him describing 13/14. I think it was obvious to all of us that things were clicking on and off the field. An absolutely magical season.

Without bragging, I started the "Sing him up, sign him up" chant in the South Stand during his debut, because it was blindingly obvious that he was someone very, very special. Well, all right then, a bit of bragging! He could have been an England player, maybe even captain. And yeah, all right - a lot of bragging! Its the only song I've ever started! DavesaRam
I can remember when his ACL happened during pre-season, and when he broke his leg, that I felt like I did when Clough and Taylor walked out on us all those years ago. Results since then on the whole suggest that it was almost as significant. Oh what could have been!
FlyBritishMidland
Reading this thread has made me watch this. A majestic footballer. If It hadn’t been for the ACL in pre-season or the leg break a couple of years later you can’t help but wonder what might have been. One of those players that was worth the entrance fee!! Ramarena
You don’t see many players with that level of potential playing for Championship teams. He was a supremely gifted footballer with a big career ahead of him, but he ended up being repeatedly cut down in his prime. The mental torment he must have endured to get himself back out on the pitch after that leg break on top of the rest! Speaking of which “I was told initially it would be a 4-5 month turnaround. 16 months later, 6 operations later” I knew there were a lot of problems but didn’t realise there we’re six operations! Such a shame.......I hope he can have some time to take stock and find something he enjoys doing be it coaching, punditry or something out of football. Good luck to him! chelloram
So sad to see George's career not take the turn and route his beautiful control and composure during games deserved to take him. One of the few footballers I will always wax lyrical about his time in a Derby shirt, up there with the Croats and Italians in terms of ability and would have graced some of of those earlier much better sides he was that good. I'm sure he would have made it as an England player if luck had become him. Hopefully he'll find a way to stay in the game as others here have alluded to. Good luck to a Rolls Royce footballer. I'm sure without that injury in 2014 we WOULD have been promoted in 2014/15. Do you remember that we signed Omar Mascarell to fill his boots & when that didn't work we tried all of Bryson, Hughes & Hendrick in the defensive midfield role without success. George Thorne was a beast in that specialist position
rammieib
Loved with Jeff and Cyrus when he was up here. Clubs and players move on. When you read articles like this that day at Wembley and how it’s probably not only changed the clubs history since but every one of us as fans. Heartbreaking. Seth's left foot
Class player and I can only imagine how heartbreaking it is to have such a promising career taken away from you, as he has admitted his struggle to cope. I agree that he could be an excellent coach, one day he will work alongside Bryson... I live in hope that the 2013/14 team will be reincarnated! I hope the club do the decent thing and make up for any poor treatment of him.

Oh it was a horrible abortion of a season when it went wrong....I remember a 2-1 away win at Watford and thinking we're going to do it......sigh.....
