Not convinced by Elsnik on the left wing. And a lot of our players are going down very easily, Gordon, Hanson and Martin among them.

Villa score after the Rams don't take several opportunities to clear the danger, including two saves from Barnes.

TBF Villa are being very physical, Hanson and Blackman have both taken some heavy knocks.

Head tennis in the box is always a bit bizarre to watch. Happens quite a lot in U23 football.

Heading is banned in youth football in America and that's bound to be the case within five years in the UK. No one can risk the future concussion lawsuits. The whole game will change - this will feed through into the senior game too - and will lose something, but in the end fast skillfull football played on the deck will still be good to watch.

Aye, ever get the feeling it's just not thought about at academy level? Always looks like nobody's quite sure

I think it's a few things.

Firstly I think a lot of defending is experience. You get the impression a lot of the dallying in defense is players thinking about their training, who's meant to go for it etc. - they don't want to leave their position and then duck it up - where as with experienced defenders its all just instinct. Keogh and Davies will happily run completely out of position to get rid of the ball.

Defenses are commonly unstable at U23 level, so there's the natural loss of comfortable communication that comes with changing who's on either side of you.

Also, the concept of a commanding GK at U23 level is basically unheard of, and that makes a huge difference.

Am as impressed with Sibley as i am discouraged by Blackman.  Hanson doing well, seems to thrive on high tempo, which to me is a good sign.  Thorne has been too far back i think but moved further ahead in the last ten minutes.

Like many a young fullback, seems like the area he needs to work on is the defensive side of things. Defends well enough when he's forced into a one on one, but tracking his runners seems to be a weakness (based on this one half game).

Very comfortable and calm on the ball though. Speedy too.

Lots of potential. Possibly more as a winger but lets see how he progresses.

I don't know what it is with Derby and full backs. I reckon one of our main scouts is a full-back specialist.

Agree with you assessment, Blackman really isn't showing much interest which is really disappointing - Made no effort to chase back once he'd lost the ball, bottled a headed challenge. Shame.

I believe Sibley played mostly CM and occasionally LM/LW before moving to LB last season

Good to know! Wasn't aware of that.

Tbf the U23s never stopped playing like that. Wassall's always been a student of it.

You know, thinking about it @Animal is a Ram - this is probably why the youth have taken to Lampard's system so well. They've been playing it all their time at Derby, unlike many of the first teamers.
