Steve McClaren - End Of An Era (With Video)

Very surprised to see people say SM took us backwards.

We were going nowhere when he took over. Almost overnight he took us from mid table/potential relegation dog fight, to a kick away from the PL. That's an unbelievable achievement.

And as for resources, just how much of Mels millions did he spend?

I'm not a massive SM fan and I think Rowett will be a better option for the future, but let's not rewrite history to justify an anti SM stance.

Totally disagree. Christie is better and has far more upside than Wisdom. AW was a solid defender for us so what. He's not even a starter at his loan club in Austria. This defence under Pearson and mac when he took over has been an absolute rock ... and Christie a part of that. Far more resolute than the 13-14 defence.

Christie will flourish further especially under the right manager. He has all the tools: speed ball skills trickery tackling, solid in the air ... and in some games this season he's been phenomenal.

As someone previously mentioned, if the points achieved under Steve had been spread evenly during his tenure, he perhaps wouldn't have been fired. It must be difficult working for a guy like MM. Telling the media that promotion isn't the main priority, but welding the axe when it starts to look unlikely. Weird behavior imo.

He's given this club lot's of good memories, both as a player and coach/manager. It's a shame it had to end the way it has, it was never a sensible idea to try it a second time hoping to rediscover the lost magic, it rarely works out well and so it has proved.

Still not sure about the sacking and I hope it doesn't taint the great times that Mac has given this club during his various spells here.

A bit hard for Wisdom to play for a team he is no longer at.

Defensively Christie is naive defensively and tends to ball watch, he is often out of position, and often makes the wrong decisions with the ball, mainly through indecisiveness. Personally think Baird should be starting over him.

Surely the axe was used due to the run of pathetic performances with players showing no desire or commitment.Something the manager is 100% responsible for. Nothing to do with promotion. Promotion & wins come from consistent performances.

Yes it's a shame really.

This club was just treading water under Clough junior.

McLaren made watching the Rams exciting again, certainly in his first spell and again briefly after he took over from Pearson.

You really have to wonder what he and the team could've achieved had it not been for that late, late Wembley sickener... or if the club has ever really recovered since.

Give me a break. The dude was utterly clueless and the fact that the team was actually getting worse and losing more with less effort as he got to implement his style speaks volumes. Never liked him then and don't like him now. And I'm not going to partake in nostalgia about someone who with resources at his disposal, accomplished nothing except to hold us back.

Utterly clueless? Ah, because as proven you know more than England managers.. which is why you don't want Derby's top scorer back. Think you're the clueless one.

How will McClaren be remembered in time? He has the highest win percentage (of anyone who has managed more than 15 matches) in the club's history. Obviously you cannot judge great managers purely on win percentage, achievements have to be taken into account.

Few would therefore argue the top 2 managers in our history are Clough and Mackay. Few would also argue Arthur Cox and Jim Smith are next along with Stuart Macmillan who won the FA Cup in 1946.

But who then? If you go purely on achievement then unfortunately you could say the poison dwarf himself Billy Davies, much as his football was terrible he won promotion to the Premier League. But he also played a significant part in the worst team in premier league history.

People can be caught up in modern day football and the instant success or sack him mentality created by social media. Those consumed by that say McClaren is useless, a clown, the wally with the brolly who failed. But if you look at the stats, and also the facts, only the 3rd manager to get us to the playoff final and a 50% win percentage over 2 spells, there is a strong argument to say McClaren is the 6th best manager in our entire history. Just something to think about.

For me, the football we played under him was the best since the 90s when he also played a key role as assistant to Jim Smith. He should be commended for what he has done for the club and should hold his head high at what he has achieved in his career.
