I think that Raul Albumentosa will Yoke well with Shackell as a defensive pairing. They may rustle a few feathers here and there but I will be cock a hoop with a lot of clean sheets. Clement is laying a firm defensive foundation and I do not think that we will be clutching at straws or getting too broody about the plans that are being hatched at this time. The team is looking at bit like a Curate's egg at present, being better in some parts than others but an experienced box to box player will be welcome. Let's hope that some players will eventually have three lions on their shirt.by the end of this season.

Alex Pearce - total aerial battles per game 6.45 - win percentage 67.05%
Jason Shackell - total aerial battles per game 6.29 - win percentage 71.13%
Ryan Shotton - total aerial battles per game 4.84 - win percentage 54.55%
Richard Keogh - total aerial battles per game 4.68 - win percentage 61.61%
Jake Buxton - total aerial battles per game 4.68 - win percentage 58.42%
Raul Albentosa - total aerial battles per game 3.88 - win percentage 74.19%

Surprised with how low Buxton is, however, it's clear to see where Pearce and Shackell help improve us in this aspect.

On 'duels' (whatever the hell that means):

Alex Pearce - total duels per game 8.55 - win percentage 64.03%
Jason Shackell - duels per game 8.61 - win percentage 69.42%
Ryan Shotton - total duels per game 9.44 - win percentage 56.78%
Richard Keogh - total duels per game 7.84 - win percentage 66.01%
Jake Buxton - total duels per game 6.84 - win percentage 60%
Raul Albentosa - total duels per game 6.88 - win percentage 67.27%

Jason Shackell comes out top in both categories, despite playing in the Premier League.

And our much maligned Albentosa comes out very well, in 8 games, in a poor side, having already been written off by a section of our fan base.

I thought that. Not that I ever doubted the bloke anyway. Some fans are seduced by last ditch sliding challenges rather than calm, controlled defending.

Shackell doesn't top both counts as Albentosa has a better aerial battle win percentage. But as a few of my fellow posters have subsequently suggested you might see why PC could prefer Shackell, Pearce and Albentosa as more obvious starting players this season than Keogh, Buxton and Shotton.

This does show performance in one against one situations but that is only a small part of the story, what it doesn't show is how well a player reads the game, how often he doesn't have to make a tackle or challenge for a header. It doesn't demonstrate how calm he is under pressure, or how aware he is of where everyone is. I am hoping that we have a calm and disciplined approach to our defending, we don't have Shackell so my current choice of pairing would be any two from Albentosa, Buxton and Pearce, and I would be happy with that for now. If Shackell does join I would throw him into there as well.
