Barker has left the club

I take my hat off to him for the effort he has clearly put in to make a recovery. Whether it is a full and complete physical recovery time will only tell, but if anyone really thinks he is the solution to our defensive ills, then I am going to suggest that both Dimmu and Daz-the-Ram get their boots out of the attic too. I think his Twitter post is a bit churlish too.

Barker hasn't dpent three years doing nothing.

he's spent three years having numerous operations, and working his nuts off to get fit again.

he was injured - through not fault of his own - playing for derby county.

yet he doesn't get an opportunity to say goodbye or a merit award or even a thank you from the club at the awards night.

Not our finest hour.

He was injured playing for Derby County...and Derby County looked after him. 3 years of the best treatment he could recieve, specialists, surgeons and physios, so that if he wants he can play football again. I think the club have been great with him.

Some people are far too sentimental, but its time to move on

My gripe isn't that the wage bill has increased or that the transfer budget has increased, it's that we've signed a couple of players who I don't think were any better than those already here and that despite (RASH) promises from the we're still in the same division having spent a fortune (by our standards) and now we're letting go some of my favourite players, players who have contributed much more than Shotton, Whitbread, Warnock, Alben bloody tosa.

I don't want change, I don't like change, I thought the squad he inherited was good enough to go up and now I see it potentially being dismantled and I don't have the same trust that you have that the replacements will be better based on what I've seen come through the door so far.

I think its harsh to judge some of the players mentioned here seeing as they only arrived in January and players like Albantosa and Whitbread have had injuries during that time as well.

Maybe he did feel that squad he inherited was good enough, but if we made no signings people would be questioning him, questioning the board. There is always room for improvement at clubs, Watch Chelsea sign a few more players in the summer. The problem is you don't know who is going to work out and who isn't.

The squad he inherited wasn't good enough to go up when the opportunity presented itself, as 3 of them (Buxton, Forsyth, Keogh) imploded!

That said, the squad might have been good enough for autos, had it had the 10 extra games at the start of the season playing like they did for the last 36, but that was only with the use of Eustace and latterly Thorne in the DCM role.

And no, that isn't a dig at anyone.

We need to spend a Barker-type fee (x2) on a right sided centre half, then a Barker-type fee (x2) on a left sided centre half, then have Thorne fit all season, and sign a cracking winger on a Barker-type fee (x3) and I think we're just about there!

The club have been fantastic for Barker, fully supported him through his injury and Barker was a fantastic servant for the club.

Having worked so hard to get back to fitness, I imagine what he wants is to be playing competitive football regularly. I don't think we can offer him that and it would be a travesty for him to have worked so hard to only be a squad player or spend his days sat on the bench. I think it is in the best interest of both parties, we have no idea how he will handle competitive football, the U21s is a whole different thing. I would have loved to see him get his farewell in the shirt but it wasn't to be.

I don't think he sees it like that for the last year

That might be the case, but it makes me not like him slightly. Helping him through his injury was the right thing to do but I honestly don't think he could have had any complaints if we hadn't.

Didn't we give him a contract whilst he was recovering when we could have just released him?

Gutted he never got to play for us again but I was ready for this to be announced. I never thought he'd play for us again just due to the nature of the injury

Giving him a little bit of recognition and thanks wouldn't have gone amiss.

Barker type fee is a phrase I haven't heard in a while. Lovely.

He was on the pitch before the Reading game.

He must have been one of the few players who turned up for the game then.

Recognition for what exactly? He was a decent player for a couple of years for which he was paid decent wages I imagine.

I think paying him for an additional 3 years when there was no onus to do so is more than enough thanks.
