Same reason they need to wait for ball tracking in cricket. It take a while for the software to transmogrify the video feeds and do the trigonometry, draw all those irritating lines. 

It looked like a slither of the ball hadn't fully crossed the line to me. 

What happened ? Didn’t the ref rule the goal out, then  to be overturned by VAR?  I think that was it.  

but I suspect VAR got it right and all the pundits simply don’t know how far the ball needs to be over the line for it not to be overhanging the line

This is to be my next big adventure- going to a match on my own. I used to regularly but 3 years ago today I was undergoing surgery to find my brain and then to repair the haemorrhage in it! As well as suffering small physical and mental losses, I also lost a lot of confidence. I’ve been setting myself challenges although my partner and family are not very enthusiastic! With this game being so early it means I can be back in Bristol for 5.30 so it’s not too long a day.
I may spend the following couple of days in a darkened room! COYR
 

The amount is split between the clubs a player has played for in the 2 years prior to the World Cup. 
I have no idea how the split is calculated. Could be games played, time at each club, an even split no matter how long at each club, or something else.

The criticism of Southgate reflects a view that he has failed to win two major tournaments which could have been won, because he was too cautious. (And couldn’t organise a penalty shootout.) He seems to listen to what people are saying. And he seems smart enough to learn from his mistakes. So maybe he’ll do better this time ?

Too much fantasy football mentality amongst England fans. Shoehorn in all the best players and hope it gels seems to be the typical view.
When you are playing the best in the world, you need to win the midfield. That means winning an often physical battle against top players. You therefore need two midfielders minimum who can tackle and hold the ball under pressure.
At the back, we don’t have an embarrassment of riches so he has gone with a tried and tested pairing, plus ‘safer’ fullbacks defensively.
We know there are probably eight players who could fill the four ‘attacking’ options (inc one more progressive midfielder)
He will shuffle the pack and may occasionally get it wrong but our bench must be one of the best. 
 
Going into the tournament a lot seemed to rest on Harry Kane. On top form he’s undoubtedly the best we have but Callum Wilson has shown he can play with good players around him.
I think we should be proud of our team, though I suspect France may be too strong. They may well win it.

Good he’s telling the truth and not saying what people want to hear. Of course this is what he wants. Don’t think any less of him for saying it. He and Derby are a mismatch just now and just now is a critical point in his career
