There's 3 types of debt. There's the debt TO mel, in respect of all the money he's put in over the years. He can write this off.
There's debt which is owed to others in respect of money borrowed and spent. Mel is possibly guarantor for this debt and after any sale he would not want to be "on the hook". Perfectly standard and natural. I assumed that this was the 40m being quoted as part of the deal.
Now the Wail are trying to stir the pot by talking about possible future sums owed. These sound like contingent debts - money might or might not be payable. For example add ons under player purchases. Mel will not have any responsibility for these once he has sold - the buyers due diligence should identify the potential range and affect the price.
The numbers bandied around in the alonso deal suggested Mel was only looking for about 5m for himself so he can't cut the price much more.
Worst case is obviously if the club is truly unsellable and Mel refuses to underwrite further debt, even if he is prepared to write off all the debt owed to him plus the stuff already accrued that he is guaranteeing.

You'd have thought that Morris would have wised up by now that the only people interested in the club have been a couple of chancers who have totally wasted his time so the asset he's trying to sell isn't an attractive proposition at the price he's trying to punt it at.

Well yes I did understand the point but sometimes people have to swallow their pride.
I’m not having a go at Mel but there becomes a point where the show has to move on.

Possibly because buying high and selling low is not how rich men become rich in the fist place.

If course but Derby would be a good investment if the debts were lower.
I struggle to understand what Mel wants from this sale.
I honestly think he could do without the hassle.
If I were him I wouldn’t be worried about a few million

If so why doesn’t he pay off the club debts and cut his losses by selling cheaper.
    Genuine question!

I know you should never look at concept kits because we just end up inevitably disappointed but I just came across these... How awesome are they?

Hard to sell anything football related when there is a pandemic going on for any club - whilst our troubles are being enflamed by the national media other clubs must be in similar positions but any potential owner would think ( mistakenly) that they could sell 28-30,000 tickets to us lot.
there is a major football reset occurring this summer with so many players being released who will not get other jobs because the money simply will not be coming in and no club can guarantee selling players anymore as well as being unable to afford loan fees.
the parachute clubs will be be so far away from the rest this season it will be staggering

It fairly simple - an owner trying to please 30,000 supporters with what they demanded (ambition) and once that isn’t going so well a major virus comes along and totally kills football income to a low percentage.
one thing is for sure - there are going to be an awful lot of unemployed footballers this summer or ones appearing to be putting little effort in because they are now being paid 25-50% less than they were previously (obviously talking about the championship here)

Isn’t there some insolvency steps that occur before you are talking admin?
Creditors getting Xp/£ rather than risk of nothing.
Helping club recover should be in the interest of the creditors with chance of getting future return.
I guess MM being one of the biggest creditors, probably the one not so keen?

Appreciate we all have views on the Daily Mail or the EFL for that matter but there is never smoke without fire. As I said, we can bury our heads in the sand all we like and just say these articles are rubbish and they have it in for us but I am sorry but these are concerning issues that are not going to go away and the Daily Mail are right to publish them.
My personal opinion is that anyone would be stupid to takeover Derby County. Our club is in an absolute state of a mess. What from the outside would look a great proposition is not so rosy for any potential investor, clearly.
My original post was demanding that the custodians of our club speak to the fans and tell us what is going on. I stand by that and action is already underway to further pursue this. I do hope other fans feel it more so now.
Stephen Pearce and Mel Morris have run this club into the ground. They are responsible for this and owe the fans an explanation.
The next thing we will see is Wayne Rooney walk and I do not blame him.

Although the wage bill is apparently pretty small by recent standards, our income has never been lower. Even our season ticket income is going to be almost nothing as most will roll over from last season.

Probably very damning that he was sacked with the agreement of the fake sheikh. I dare say that Mel wasn't expecting to have to pay the compensation himself.

Nothing to do with the main topic .But re players wages I remember going to the ticket office  at the BBG 1979 ish ,and passing Alan Biley walking the opposite way opening his wage packet head down counting his money( REAL money).
    How times have changed

Mel seems trapped. He wants to stop the cash drain. His loyalties mean he can’t contemplate administration. But with Covid variants now threatening next season’s revenues, it must be incredibly hard to agree a sale price. Any sensible purchaser would just drag their feet as he continues to pour cash into the abyss.

They’ve got everything right all week before anyone else. They even have Mel Morris quotes in the story. Face it Morris has made us unsellable even if he sells us for a quid who wants to take on if it is to believed 60 million of debt before you even look at the playing squad than just finished bottom 4
