I've liked the little I've seen of Bardell and would be happy to see him battle with Rooney for right side of defence over the next few weeks while Ward/Wilson are out. Seems he can do RCB/RB rather than wingback from what I've seen

I want to see the end of the transfer window, then see what we’re looking like  by October time. Not really an option for that.

Went for Xmas. I think that’s fair. If we are not in the top 6 that would be totally unacceptable.

That is the sort of player I really thought we would sign this summer with a few more "risks" taken on promising lower league or younger players. Although if no/very low fee and low wages not much of a risk if we are aiming for a steady sustainable rebuild.
I think the sort of player we have signed is the main reason I am so disappointed at the start of the season - not results, not style, not PW but the short-term-ism of the recruitment (not blaming anyone in particular) and the fact our youngsters who havent broken through yet only seem to get a proper chance when there is no other choice like on Saturday. Pre-season it looked as if the next batch would get their chance but I dont think they will. Despite the off-field nonsense I really felt connected to the team with blend of our youngsters and more experienced pros bringing them through over the last 2-3 seasons. By accident it seemed we had ironically found "the Derby way". But with Bird and Cashin probably off/being sold to fund more journeyman (nothing personal) I find it all a bit sad and disappointing. Would have rather built a younger more long-term team I am invested in than get a quick promotion but thats just me I suspect!
Again dont really want to blame anyone but suspect financially us getting out of this league is a priority but ironically the short-term signings with that aim may make it less likely.
Ignore my depressed ramblings, think this is the year the ramifications (no pun intended) of Mel's mess really come to fruition. And last night I watched the Leeds v Derby playoff semi second leg!

Why? And even if good young players don't hang around we could try signing a few.

He clearly doesn't see Thompson as a first team squad member, just someone to help make up the numbers. Same would apply to Rooney based on the evidence so far.
Hourihane, Smith, Bird and Thompson ARE his 2 people in each CM position. Understandably, we're a tad short for 25+% of the season due to Bird's injury, but this is why you have a top class academy. For youngsters to step in for a few games here and there to plug the gaps.
Signing another CM would free up Thompson (and Bird when fit) to help Sibley in the AM role, so whilst a signing is required, the point regarding usage of young players still stands.

    8 weeks = 14 games
Rest of season = 32+ games
    We have 2 options:
    1. Sign 1 player to be a starter, and utilise fringe players such as DRobinson and Radcliffe to fill in when required until Bird is fit
    2. Sign 2 players, not use fringe players and harm their development, AND limit game time for first teamers such as Thompson and Sibley, further harming their development and future sell-on value.
Signing short term cover is not an option, as this indicates they are squad players rather than starters who would improve the squad. If they would improve the squad, they would be season long signings, resulting in option number 2.
Why would we sell Bird in January? Our aim is promotion and selling Bird would be to the detriment of that. He's our best midfielder so we should be doing everything to keep him. We do that by getting promoted...

Why would I? I was adamant that Thompson should have been brought into the side for matchday 2 and should have started every game since. I also would introduce Sibley to the starting lineup once fit
The flaw wasn't having a midfield of Smith, Hourihane and Bird and asking them to play in such a way which leave every single one of them and the defence exposed to counters. A change in style would have addressed that problem.
I have not said we shouldn't sign one midfielder, quite the opposite. I have said I would be annoyed if we signed two midfielders when we already have: Bird, Hourihane, Smith, LThompson and Sibley, with DRobinson and Radcliffe waiting in reserve. Two signings would further compound the short sightedness of this entire summer transfer window.

For some inexplicable reason after the match, I still came away feeling annoyed. I don't know why, I can't get my head around it. We won a home game though, box ticked.
Massive positive was Liam Thompson, I thought he was superb and exactly what we've missed in midfield, energy. Bird, Hourihane and Smith isn't going to work because they don't compliment each other's styles. Thompson is different. Aggressive with and without the ball, no fear. Difference maker, has to keep playing him because our midfield has no fight in a battle. Waggy getting another goal and a nice finish easy finish too. He's very comfortable at this level, he'll definitely get over 15 goals, what a good accident (massive piece of luck) that might turn out to be for Warne. He would have never bothered to look at him if it wasn't for Fozzy.
Negatives, we still looked pretty ropey on the ball and Fleetwood should have scored at least one goal. The keeper and the woodwork saved us big time. Fleetwood having so many clear cut chances scares me because I really don't think they played that well either. Why Warne switched to a back 5 near end to protect a one goal lead still baffles me a day later, this invited Fleetwood to create more chances rather than Derby being positive and getting the ball forward.
I'm a stubborn person, I don't rate Warne and his tripe "football" to be honest. I'm keeping the comfort and hope because he is a promotion specialist. Regardless of my opinion, I cannot deny his successes in the past. He can get it over the line. This is why at matches I'll cheer the team and back him to the moon if it gets us out of playing teams like Fleetwood again next season.

I’m glad he had a good game, we really could do with him establishing himself because he does cover a lot of ground and offer energy.
Hourihane is the midfielder with a bit of end product, so for me he has to start, the other two centre mid positions really need to cover his leg work. Korey Smith isn’t doing too much in his position, so I see no reason why he can’t be replaced with Thompson.

A mid table finish would only be acceptable if a young squad was being built, with players being developed for sale or ability to play at a higher level.
Someone has made a choice to build an experienced squad. That really means only top 6 minimum is good enough and even then you're in the same position again in a year if you don't win them, with players one year older, some to replace because they're out of contract / finished, no players to sell to do it etc etc.

My biggest gripe with Warne so far is that he’s hasn’t trusted the youngsters. I saw enough from Thompson in the cup game against Barnsley last season and in the various cameos he had to suggest we could’ve used him last season. Pleased he now looks like he’ll get the chance. As for Rooney, could’ve been a regular for me last season, been scratching my head for a while as to why he hasn’t been playing. Of all the youngsters at the club including Cashin and Bird, he has the highest ceiling in my opinion.

I'd say that applies to at least one if not both of our existing wingbacks.
In fact I think Rooney is already the best defender of the three.
Of course, I wouldn't be playing him at wingback, I'd play him at right back, threading those lovely balls up to NML. He did really well with that today.

Both Rooney and Thompson deserve that on today's showing.

Seems mad to me when the system doesn't seem to suit us, and we have cover in Rooney and Smith and Mendez-Laing and Bardell for the next two months if required. If we're money in the kitty, spend it elsewhere!
